From New Scientist:
US conservatives block cancer vaccine for girls (http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn11842&feedId=online-news_rss20)

Plans to vaccinate young girls against the sexually-transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer have been blocked in several US states by conservative groups, who say that doing so would encourage promiscuity.I'm almost too furious to type. Political correctness and fear of sexuality is being put before the health. I think there was a thread about the HPV vaccine a while back, but this is a recent development.

I don't agree with their reasons, but I agree with the results. This is a very new drug, its long term affects are still not completely known. It looks to me like the drugs companies are trying make its use compulsory, and that scares the hell out of me.

You don't make a vaccine mandatory when you don't know all the information on the drug. It needs to be evaluated more.

I promise you that if this vaccine is under careful scrutiny and proves to be totally safe, it will be allowed.

Wallower, that topic title is downright LordJezo-ish in its spin.

I agree that the story (and my thread, for that matter) is trying to bite people and drag them in. I also agree that there are financial and political considerations, and it's all very new. What I don't agree with is compromising people's health to preserve a sense of safe asexuality among girls. It's education (with a side of prevention) vs. ignorance.

and yes, Lord Jezo is giving private lessons now

If People CHOOSE To Vaccinate Their Daughters For This, The Option Is Already Available. The Issue Is Whether States Should MANDATE That Every Girl Be Vaccinated. The Governor Of Texas Tried To Impose This, And There Was A White-Hot Public Outcry.

F_S Is Concerned When Governments Mandate Anything, But He Is Also Extremely Skeptical Of The Drug And Medical Communities.

There Are Lots Of 50-60 Year Olds In Germany With Flippers Instead Of Arms And Legs, Because Their Mothers Were Told That Thalidimade Was Safe.

Where are all these Germans with their gold medals for swimming?

I agree that it's new and that it's bad to approve things like this without testing. The end of the article presents arguments against the readiness of the vaccine itself. I'm not saying we all should go up to the government dispensary and get our nightly pills. I disagree with the idea that sex ed or in this case STD prevention leads to promiscuity.

While some "conservatives" are worried about the HPV vaccine leading to more promiscuity, most of us are worried about unnecessary vaccinations being made mandatory. This does not stop airborne diseases being passed around in grade and junior high schools. Not necessary for girls to have to attend school.

What we should be worried about is having our children's education put at risk-it is getting to the point where unnecessary medications like the HPV vaccine and Ritlin (spell check?) are being forced into our children's bodies while the school holds expulsion over the parents head. What is the parent to do? The kid needs to go to school-and around here, private school for my three kids would cost me around $17,000 a year-absolutely out of reach for 80 percent of the parents.

While I agree with my fellow conservatives that it should NOT be a mandatory vaccine-I will be giving it to my daughter when she is 12. My wife is a nurse and she said that this vaccine is pretty safe most of the risks are as equal as the others.

The real issue is the government imposing its will on its citizens. If you choose to have the vaccine then fine, and if they can force this vaccine what is to say they won't force another one down the road

And let's not forget how chicks get cervical cancer.

They get it from HPV, which is from cheesedick.

Which means the chicks getting cervical cancer are dirty whores anyway.

NICE girls blow clean, AMERICAN circumcised penises.

BAD girls let uncut Taliban Heathens bang them.

I say deny all women the vaccine, and we'll weed out the traitors.

That article is a fine example of bad journalism. The headline is about "conservatives" blocking the vaccine and the article mentions "conservative groups". Which ones? How big are they? What do they have to say? (Obviously the journalist didn't talk to any of them.) How are they blocking the bills?

It's a fundamental job of jouralism to get "ballance" in your articles. That means you simply go to the "groups" and get their side of the story and write it. A real news agency would have never published the article. Maybe he got his science right but I don't trust it.
