What happened to everyone who was jumping on the "freedum of speech" bandwagon?

what happened to "people need thicker skins"

i dunno. maybe when opie asked stern for help? "how bout it howie?"
I for one was hoping that would've been the case.
I was a little disapointed in Sterns stance...but can kind of understand his point.

This is the first time I've heard Howard's voice in several years. I'm trying to remain non-inflammatory but if I had to compare the level of substance Ron puts on the waves vs. Howard... I'm beside myself in disbelief that Howard still has a mic in front of him.
Holy cripes that was uneventful and characterless.

I have a few friends who still talk about how great Howard is. The trick is to ask them to tell you about anything that was funny or interesting that happened on the show. Usually half way through explaining something they lose steam when they realize it's kind of stupid and corny. My example is always in the same week Howard had some 19 year old girl that was doing an above 60 year old gangbang or something and had someone in the studio spit on her. the same week Ron and Fez had Sydney Pollack talk about his movie, relationship and alittle history on Frank Gehry. Maybe the days of porn chicks getting off on the radio was entertaining when I was in high school but I'm older now.(plus I have high speed internet and a credit card)

Im pretty sure this was a while ago when opie's dad died...I know it got talked about by O and A. He died about 3 years ago, and if you do a search on google people talk about it. I've never heard the audio so I don't know, but its not like i just made this up.
As much as i hate quoting a messageboard this was from Sternfannetwork
"as much of pricks they are they have limits and they don't make fun of the dead..
The took the subject on gary's dad very respectfull and only ragged on howard unlike
how howard ragged on Anthony's or Opie's dad when he died."
Some Stern fans were brutal, but I heard nothing from him.
Howard did trash Mancow when his father died about 10+ years ago.
I really think it's bullshit, like a lot of the stuff out there.

No...you do the work and find it, if you are going to make these statements. The burden is not on Mikeyboy (or me).
Onto what Perry said, however, it would be a true sign of being above it all if everyone with a vested interest in provacative talk radio put aside petty bullshit and saw the big picture. D&M have been very vocal in supporting O&A in this and Imus, and there is no great love story between any of them (also I heard both D&M wish Fezzie well yesterday on his return). Maybe it's where you put yourself in the food chain, but it would be a real classy sign for Howard to take up a cause he supposedly has owned for 20 years, on behalf of "enemies"

Although I was never a Stern fan and reallydon't care about him enough to get worked up to hate him vicariously through O&A, I would have to say the contract he has with Sirius makes him about as untouchable as you can get. Sirius could never eat that contract and survive, merger or not, and, aside from Mel Karmazin's experience and chutzpah, Stern is the only valuable asset they've got. Howie is virtually a de facto co-CEO over there.
And, although I haven't listened to any of his shows (O&A clips aside) in years, I doubt he has the energy or desire to talk about anything edgier than himself anymore.

Alright, I think this was the discussion, i've found it mentioned several times but once again i'm quoting a messageboard.
Then Opie mentioned Howard said that he would f*** Opie's father's skull. I remember this conversation on Howard's show about a month ago, although I forget who it was with.
The guest made reference to Mancow, and how Howard said he would F*** hid dead father's skull because Mancow sent one of Howard's interns a box of sh*t. Then the guest asked if he would do the same to Opie's father skull and Howard said, "No, I'd f*** OPIE's dead skull".
The exchange was mentioned in a show recap on Marksfriggin, with Dice so who knows what actually got said,"Dice said he started doing their show and New York started to get hot on him again so he was able to sell out the Beacon Theater and then had the chance to do the Garden again. He said that it was incredible that he was able to do that for his son. Dice said that he did the Opie and Anthony show the day before the Garden show and Anthony was doing an impression of him. Dice said that Mancow eventually became his friend over the years. He said he knows that Howard has a thing with him... Howard said he doesn't have a thing, he just wants to fuck his father's dead skull. Dice said that's what he doesn't like when he does stuff like that and asked Howard to do that when he's not there."
Btw, i never said mikey should do his research i just i said i didn't know but it was mentioned places on google.

Fuck him, he's next. And if the PC Police, Corperations and Special Interest groups succeed in taking O&A and Ron and Fez from me, I won't stand and fight for Stern.

Eh... seems like he'll take the stance against whoever he's talking about and whatever they did for the sole purpose of keeping himself in his own mind as the pariah and the outcast so that he can resort to his "they're out to get me" mantra when anything in his life goes awry....

I think Perry has a very valid interesting point. You all, you forget where your priorities are at. Most of you the people who have responded up to about the post that I'm quoting are proving yourselves to be, dare I say it, douchebag hypocrites. It's alright for censorship of someone else whom you don't like, but if it's someone you DO like, then it's not alright?
We're all in this together- but if you wish to be fractured and splintered and have no real consistency whatsoever with your arguments for free speech, then you just sound like a lot of spoiled rotten children who do not honestly believe in the shit you're spewing. And that devalues all the legitimate arguments made in defense of Imus, JV and Elvis, and now O&A that have been made on this board thus far. And it damages EVERYONE'S credibility- so think twice before you say some dumb ignorant shit like "He should be fired for his opinions!". You're damaging the entire cause for anti-censorship in this country by being so fickle and bendable in the first place. Where's your conviction? Is it solely based in the fact that they might take your toys away? This isn't just about YOU...you're no better than Stern if you're that self-centered.
And don't give me 'HE SAID WUB WUHHH!' Sure, you can hate him and be outraged. Sure you have the right to call for his firing. But it proves all your whining and yelling for free speech to be airy bullshit that no one should take seriously since it's coming from YOU. I hate Stern with a passion, hated him long before I knew of O&A, mainly because he slandered Columbine, saying the kids deserved to be shot, and since one of my friends was involved in the shootings there, it made me hate him alot. But I never once felt he should have been removed from the airwaves for that opinion. I just opted never to listen to him. And that policy stands to this day.
God damn it. It's like you people calling for his firing are a bunch of 9 year olds who got your toys stepped on and now you want to step on someone else's.

Just when I thought I was out, stupidity pulls me back in. Yes, he has no ratings BECAUSE HE IS ON SIRIUS ONLY! He doesn't ever need ratings again. He's worth 600 MILLION! He can dare anyone to ever fire him.Honestly, a 2 minute clip and everyone starts fingerblasting themselves. All he did was respond to Opie's snivelling request on "How about it Howard?". Could you imagine what O and A would be saying if the situation were reversed? He gave them a pass and was basically saying "Don't think I'm dumb enough to let you drag me into your bullshit". He's a better man than me, I'd be taking a much bigger dump on them if they attacked my family the way they attacked his. One more thing, HE NEVER said anything about Opie's Dad, that was made up pest mularkey. I'm even more psyched for the merger now, I get free baseball, Ron and Fez and don't have to waste an extra second of my life blocking out THE VIRUS! It was like a free shot of penicillin.

your an idiot. Re-read what he wrote. He was happy that he will have ron and fez, he doesnt like dopie and anthony. He was just saying that its great now that they are off the air so he doesnt have to void them.
Not all Ron and Fez fans like the 2 douches o&a.

Reading comprehension , we need to work on that. I've never been taken out of context before, I feel like a celebrity.

i think they'd be smart enough to put personal differences to the side and at least talk about how free speech is seemingly becoming a thing of the past for radio. They did it with JV and Elvis. Stern thinks he can stand apart from radio's attacks, but soon it will be his day in the barrel. (the barrel is where they make you suck dick)

Only about his right to free speech. He was pretty smug when he admitted to demanding that Mel gag O&A.
peachy is moving up on my list.

My bad. I was in a flurry of protest last night. I still had to read it three times to see the problem.
I don't like the pro-Stern tone, though.

So it really is true - all the good ones are taken.
I give up.
I could give two shits about Stern or O&A, but in fairness I listened to Stern's clip. He made an interesting claim about free speech at the end of his little rant and made a point that NOBODY ever stood up for his first amendment rights in the radio business.
But there is a funny thing called history. In 1987 Stern was under attack from the FCC. Radio broadcasters throughout the country went after the FCC on behalf of Howard Stern and an FCC ruling about "indecent speech".
Here is a link to a classic Bob Lassiter monologue from April 23, 1987 in defense of Howard Stern. Link to clip here. (http://www.boblassiterairchecks.com/monologues/wplp042387.mp3)
So is Howard a liar or a forgetful old man?

A little bit of both as usual, and I'm more than happy to admit that. When do people stop talking about this freedom of speech thing? There is no talk of the FCC, government intervention and Condy never made a statement(to her credit). This is about corporate America, media buying and sponsors. It's also about the merger and where O and A stand on the totem pole.It turns out they are much lower than they thought they were.

I get your point about the free speech/corporate speech thing. But Stern brought it up and that's why it's a complete double standard.

I know I'm new to the boards, but really, If you've been a fan or even remotely in the loop, you would know Stern wasn't gonna jump on the bandwagon. He jumped at the chance to say how "wrong" O&A were with the whole church thing, what makes you think he's gonna change his stripes now? Yeah, In a perefect world maybe he would get off his high horse long enough to help out the cause, but we don't live in a perfect world. I just think it's funny how he cried about how the bush was censoring him those last few years.
but the point is, wasting energy on ripping howard DOES defeat the purpose. let him say whatever he wants, calling for his head is conterproductive. you can't have it both ways.

Oh, Howard's going to say to his brainwashed fans "I'll never get fired because I'm too powerful, I can say what I want," but behind the scenes, he will indeed water down and tame down the show. He just will lie about doing it.
Say what you want about ol' Howie, but you can't call him dumb. For all his bravado and bluster, I think he knows that he's not safe. You'll never catch him admitting it, but he knows. And the show will change to reflect that.

During his last days of terrestrial radio, Howard was susupended for one day for mentioning Sirius too much. He was on the next day. Why? Because CBS sold so much advertising time, they couldn't screw with him. He has an iron clad contract with Sirius(learned from mistakes on the past) and is a major stockholder(200 million in shares), so no, they really can't mess with him. That's why he is laughing at the thought of a suspension. Suspend me and bankrupt your company. He is actually in that position.
