I know I'm new to actually posting, however I am not a troll.
My method of listening to R&F consists of catching them on the air and when they're off, I go back and listen to the full broadcasts. So I have a fairly good idea of the majority of conversations R&F have had in prior months.
I understand that XM took final action when the topic was reopened on the 14th and they assumed the boy's apology wasn't sincere (or so I've read). And I just wanted to make sure because I went back to a recording of R&F. It was 3-14-07 on XM at the 39 minute marker. Ron says he will rape the psychiatrist that turned down Fezzie. I didn't take issue with the comment then because I knew his intent (comedy) and they weren't held to broadcasting an apology. Why the double standard?
I'm a Ron and Fez fan first so I understand if I should just sit on my hands (or delete this thread) in the event this now puts R&F in a spotlight. I'm just disappointed that precedence exists but consequences differ.
Is it because a guest began the conversation? Is it because of the named subjects of said rape?

O&A were not suspended for the comments made on May 9th. They were suspended for not listening to XM who asked them not to talk about it.
The comments made were directed at specific people in the government (First lady isn't an elected/appointed position but I still consider it part of the government) If not for the merger it may not have been such a big deal. Ron's rape joke was not directed at anyone we know.
XM wanted O&A to just keep quiet and let this pass over, they did not suspend O&A for what was said on the show. In the past O&A have said SO MUCH WORSE and have goofed on XM executives as well, so it's not a free speech issue. It's buisness.

Yeah, DUH, we all know it's fine to rape strangers...the word "rape" is so harsh - can't we call it "tough love" from now on?
I've seen Hollywood actors and actresses say much worse about elected officials, even the President of the United States. I've heard comedians say they want to shoot Bush, Cheney, etc.
No one raised a stink about it.
XM claims the suspension came about because O & A violated the gag order, but there are other less public ways to handle a breach of contract.

I don't think that there was anything so specifically egregious to what they said that caused this brouhaha; I just think the self-appointed witch hunters in the media mob happened to spot O&A when they had already had their torches lit and pitchforks sharpened. The fact that they already got the taste for blood from Imus and JV & Elvis just makes the mania that much harder to stop. O&A court a much higher media profile tha R&F so its more likely they'll get the attention of the professional umbrage takers.
A lot of Ron's material could cause this kind of fake outrage if taken out of context (and his TIMING is lost in translation). Just the stuff he teases Earl with makes Imus' statement look like a MLK speech, not to mention certain prevention prevention classes he used to give. Let's hope the mania dies out so O&A can come fully back and we don't have to start executing numbnuts for criticizing the Buddays.

So, another random tangent... we agree the suspension is a result of violating a gag order, why the knee-jerk cancellation movement? O&A, once again, were their own demise so we punish XM financially? "Makes no senssssss"
Sorry, I'll preface again... I'm not trolling. I'm a staunch R&F listener and wish this never happened but I'd also like to analyze it now that it happened.

I kinda agree with you. The merger is a huge deal for XM/Sirius, and it may be the only way for the two companies to survive. The merger is essentially a 7 billion dollar deal. Even if 100,000 people cancelled, at $15 a month, that's only 18 million a year. At this point XM can give a shit about that. They are not going to risk this deal by offending high ranked officials that can possibly influence the merger decision.
I'm less and less believing it's a free speech issue. Cancelling your subscription does not help the free speech cause. It helps OnA, and OnA only. If in 30 days OnA are back, and everyone resubscribes, cancelling meant nothing. XM may even gain on the deal, because everyone may have to pay to resubscribe.

Sigh... OnA did not get suspended for the Bit, they got told to apologize for it. And yes, laughing about R*A*P*E* was kind of over the top.
What got them in trouble, was that they where told DO NOT COMMENT ON THIS AT ALL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. MAKE YOUR APOLOGY AND MOVE ON.
And, well..... they had to be smart asses about it and THATS what got them suspended. They basically ignored their bosses orders.
And for what they get paid, and the new studio, and the freedom to do pretty much whatever they want.. the LEAST they could do was follow simple instructions to NOT COMMENT ON IT.
And now they got their pee pee spanked.
Besides, they will spend those 30 days to re-do the studio anyway.

If you're going to paraphrase my post then quote the relevant parts... you know, the part where I said:
"I understand that XM took final action when the topic was reopened on the 14th and they assumed the boy's apology wasn't sincere (or so I've read)."
We're in agreement and I don't think a single post in the thread has suggested the rape commentary is the fault for the suspension. Sigh....

Not if Ron & Fez are still doing their show there.

Forget Ron, I seem to recall Fez trying to make a rape joke or two. And let's hope he doesn't have to try and say 'nergo' any time soon.
