View Full Version : FORMAT CHANGE FOR WFNY by memorial day?

At least thats the current rumor from radio insiders -
The post-Imus climate in radio doesn't seem to bode well for hot talk stations like Free FM. Al though parent company CBS Radio hasn't said anything publicly, some industry insiders have predicted that WFNY (92.3 FM, Free FM) may go the way of all flesh in New York by Memorial Day.

Nothing surprises me at this point.
I've been saying since Tuesday that this whole incident reminds me of the last days of WNEW.
I really don't see FreeFM staying talk for long, even though Ron and Fez brought in a great ratings book. They have no stomach for battling special interest groups and would rather hire a couple of minimum wage DJs to spin records.
It sad really.

I don't know the radio situation in New York, but could CBS move Ron and Fez to another station they own? They obviously haven't done anything wrong and with the good ratings book I'm sure they'd like to keep them around even if FreeFM goes down the tubes.
uhhh I just got a text message from Oanda@freemedia.com that read "Cancel XM - support the cause".. anyone else get something like this?

Opie teased that O&A will actually be doing MORE radio on FREE-FM, working 6-10 AM by next week. Is this a desperate move to save the station? Are they expecting to be canned by XM? Or are they planning to leave XM over this flap? Or is it just temporary, for the suspension?

OK someone school me....
O&A listeners break xm radios & dump the subs....even tho they are coming back to XM in 30 days. AM I the only scratching my head over this?
lets say FREE FM does go away ( doubtful) and O&A come back to XM...
will everyone rush out and buy a new radio and re-up?
and how can O&A & the listeners ever defend XM or "sell the xm product" again?

The Chick is unlistenable.
But Nick is really good! I wish he wasn't up against Ron and Fez at noon or I'd support him more.
None of that matters now though. Talk radio is dying and no one seems to want to stand up for it.

Having the Chick groom Nick Gregory on WFAN shows big time corporate respect for her. This doesn't translate into what makes a good show. But it may show what the future holds.
Nick DiPaolo is raw and an easy listen. His callers are some of the best and I hate callers.

You have a couple good points there sir
People have said in other places that they wont go back to XM even if O&A do come back because the show won't be as good, they may feel restrained from saying things, etc.
Others have said they are canceling for 30 days to show support and send XM a message

exactly....i posted on Wackbag earlier about how and why everyone is just going into hysteria over a "suspension".
Elmo post about his own personal feelings, and everyone took them as fact.
I wanna wait and see what happens....if XM does put them back on, itll be a win for the PAC, yes....but itll also be a win for XM in a way. They can claim the growth for a months period when all the Pest re-up with XM. This, in a way, is a win-win for XM and the Pests.....
I love the Buddays to much to cancel, Plus...Macon, GA radio stinks on ice....
you people complain about radio up there in New York.........at least you have something interesting to listen to. I have to STAY with XM to enjoy my radio, or go buy old CD's or and iPod....which i have no interest in.

I do not know how many people were into the board pre-O&A going to satellite, but there was speculation on wackbag where they were going to sign, either XM or Sirius. everyone went back and forth. someone posted they knew for a fact that they were going to Sirius. the next day people were out buying Sirius units and getting them hooked up. obviously we know how this ends.
substitute in their signing for the firing, and guess what, same situation. no one knows shit until the final papers are signed. even if XM is planning to fire them, it has not happened yet. they can still change their mind as they see the outrage unfold. i am sure every morning at 8am the cancellation numbers are on the board of directors desks. as that numbers creeps towards 50k and 100k, and news media reports on this shit, and it is on the front page of digg, hard feelings will get softened real quick.

I think it's all going away - stuff like the old WNEW lineup (O&A and R&F), Stern, Imus....it's being phased out.
WFNY has had atrocious ratings, which doesn't help, but I think these companies are just seeing its not worth investing in, especially if they're not going to back up their talent.
Talk Radio, on terrestrial, is going to be completely whittled down to Sports and Right Wing Talk.
I think if you're going to do comedy radio, you're going to have to be on satellite.

This station has been chasing away its talent for years now. They lost Stern, then The Booker Show and recently, the Doghouse.
If this station could figure out what it wants to be, it'd be a lot better off.

OK. Even if Free-FM is blown up, Ron and Fez have done NOTHING WRONG to lose their XM gig. Even in the WORST POSSIBLE CASE SCENARIO that O&A are fired, Ron and Fez would probably either carry 202 themselves OR be absorbed into another XM channel.

Stern left for the money. Booker left for AM drive and the money. Doghouse was the only show that was "chased away".

Stern left for the money. Booker left for AM drive and the money. Doghouse was the only show that was "chased away".
Stern left because he was tired of fighting with his own company and the FCC. The job at Sirius offered him freedom and the big payday was just the last incentive he needed to leave 92.3, which by all accounts, wasn't an easy decision for him to make.
In hindsight, "chased away" probably wasn't the right choice of words. Let's just say that FreeFM seems to have trouble holding on to their talented shows and standing by them.

Yeah, Ron & Fez should be fine either way.
O&A look like they could get the shaft of it all...unless CBS moves them to another station if they flip WFNY, they'd be out on commercial radio. And their status has been kind of up in the air, even according to them when they've mentioned it on air, in regards to if the merger were to go through or not.
If the merger goes through, then their one saving grace would be if they really have drawn as
well as they, and E-Lo, have led everyone to believe, because even a combined satellite company isn't in any position yet to turn away a significant number of subs (if they exist).
If the merger dies, then I think they'll be alright by default just because XM needs something to hang their hat on.

Ron and Fez are professionals that will always land on their feet in my opinion.
What worries me and all other fans is the ability to hear them in my area. They seem to have a good home on XM, so I'm not worried at the moment because I got XM for Ron and Fez and even though I hate what XM did to O&A I kept my sub.
We all understand that Free FM is a ticking timebomb, especially if the climate remains the same in the talk radio world.
The worst for us fans would be for them to move to another city and not have a way to hear them live on the net. Those were dark days.

Ron keeps dropping hints every 5 minutes about the station not lasting. Reminds me of the last days of NEW.
Hints tonight included:
1. Mentioning ronfez.net as the place to keep up no matter what.
2. Saying CT & Jivin are on Tuesday in Ron's "Fantasy Lineup"
Ron and Fez are professionals that will always land on their feet in my opinion.

I couldn't see XM dumping them at all at this point. Even if the merger goes through, and Mel takes over the decision making, his man-love for Howard aside, none of those other shows over there hold a candle to Ron & Fez.
I think O&A are the ones that could have some trouble on their hands, though...although, I think that's way overblown too at this point. A suspension is not a firing, and if they drive subs they'll be there.
But just for the fun of speculating...if either O&A or R&F lost both XM and New York, and decided to stay in the business (remember, O&A have FU money at this point), WYSP in Philly would be my guess as the place that would try hardest to land either. They already air O&A in the morning, and they won't be flipping formats anytime soon, I suspect.

Sorry, but both Sirius and XM are losing truckloads of money. There could be changes everywhere and anywhere if the merger falls apart.
If it goes through, it delays making any deep cuts for a year or so to see if the new company can get profitable. If not, they're in trouble again.

if history is any indication:
1. switch format to fm-talk
2. wait til the ratings start going up and fan-base grows
3. knee-jerk react to a controversy blown out of proportion
4. switch format to something no one wants to hear and keep tweaking until no one listens and a legendary station is transformed into a joke.
5. try it all again in 5 years

The Free FM in San Francisco flipped last week:
San Francisco Treated To Return Of KFRC As Free-FM Talkers Headed To “Free-AM”
From the “You Can’t Tell The Players Without A Scorecard” Department:
CBS Radio has ended KIFR’s run as "Free-FM" with a format flip to ‘60s, ‘70s & ‘80s Classic Hits at the 106.9 dial position. KIFR’s name will change to the legendary San Francisco call letters KFRC, which move up from their former home at 99.7 FM. KFRC was replaced there by the Movin' format.
As for the Talk programming displaced by KFRC. The following message has been posted at Free-FM San Francisco’s website:
“In the coming days, you’ll find FREE-FM personalities Adam Carolla, Opie & Anthony and Tom Leykis at Talk 1550 AM KYCY. This means you can continue to listen to your favorite shows very soon.”
Additionally, web surfing fans of Free-FM were informed that they can “log on to www.971freefm.com and listen to Adam and Tom do their shows live on the stream.”

The countdown for the new format at 92.3 FM in New York City started this morning after Opie & Anthony finished off their morning show. At 5pm today, the return of the WXRK call letters and 92.3 K-Rock will replace the failed experiment know as Free-FM.
Anchored by O&A in the mornings (from 6-9am), K-Rock will feature music from the '90s and today, with a core of U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Linkin Park, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Papa Roach, Green Day, and Foo Fighters, according to a pitch sent by CBS sales which also touts "K-Rock has a history of dominance in reaching young men" and "delivers a young, active consumer - that will drive advertiser results." It also promises to super serve 25 to 34 year olds.
The sales pitch also states, "K-Rock was a 20 year old rock brand... known for ratings success, great events, and strong advertising partnerships. After almost 2 years without a true Rock station in New York --- we believe the prospects for success are now greater with K-Rock. The good news is that none of our competitors filled the void we left in 2005... and now we have a second chance to bring K-Rock back to New York."
Now that summer is approaching, CBS promises that, "K-Rock will be everywhere our listeners are starting today. From the coolest concerts in the tri-state area, to the beaches of New Jersey and Long Island, to the best night spots, to malls, parks, rest stops, sporting events, and much much more. K-Rock will be EVERYWHERE!"
The bottom line from CBS sales pitch promises, "We will guarantee that K-Rock is a great rock station --- filling a void in New York radio--- and delivering results for our clients!!!"

In NYC? There's Q104 and "Jack", which is not really a true rockstation.
Granted, there's more rock in the suburbs, but NYC doesn't have a lot of "rock" stations.

Jimmy was saying a while back that DiPaulo doesn't really care about radio, but I don't know.
I think what they're trying to do is avoid another Imus situation. I guess it's hard to monitor all those shows.
Overall it's a terrible business decision and I hope it tanks. What really pisses me off is that apparently Ron and Fez were getting killer books.
I guess this is good for Fez because he won't get worked to death.

FULL STORY HERE (http://www.nj.com/living/ledger/index.ssf?/base/living-0/1179292290251190.xml&coll=1)

Obviously we are biased but doesn't seem like it makes the most sense to put Ron and Fez on in afternoon drive. They have such great rapport with fans and would eventually build a sizeable, young male audience (the dem they are looking for). The biggest problem the station in its original incarnation had was holding Howards morning listeners with music. Why will with this be any different with O & A substantially smaller audience. Playing the same old burnt music isn't going to pull much more then a 2.0 in drive. You put on a solid morning and afternoon drive show surrounded by music and its gives the station personality. This rock music isn't going to cut it, it didn't cut it the first time around why would it be any different now? I am sure it will get an initial pop (not hard from a 1.2) but 6 months a year from now (provided O & A survive that long in the post Imus radio world) the novelty ( if you can call this novelty) will have worn off. Letting Ron and Fez get away after there extremely impressive first book Big Mistake by CBS

I am amazed at theidiocy of this all. When Krock went away was there a drive to save that moldy format.

I would reccomend emailing David Hinckley at the Daily News: DHinckley@nydailynews.com
Not so much to voice your displeasure at the new format, but to lend support to Ron & Fez. If enough of us ask if we know where the buddies are going to wind up or just say that we miss them, he might mention it.

I don't buy it. It's some guy for the Ledger just talking out of his ass rather than someone who is a little more legitimate, like Sniffen.
You know what I think?
My conspiracy minded thinks that this is some sort of plot to see what kind of trends O&A generate on "real" radio only.

No. They are only drawing 2 checks because of their contract.

There will be no pod casts, the pod casts were from the FM show which no longer exists. Why would XM allow the FM station to broadcast the XM show, there is nothing in it for them.

I don't get the logic behind this, can anyone explain it to me?
Ron and Fez have a very good ratings book, in some cases quadrupling the ratings in certain demographics. The suits are happy, then things starts happening and they decide to switch the format. However, due to the contract they still have to pay Ron and Fez even though they don't have a show anymore. Even if music got the exact same ratings that R&F did, they would still have to pay two hosts for doing nothing. Wouldn't their music have to do monster ratings to compensate for what they pay Ron and Fez? Wouldn't it be far more cost effective to let their popular hosts still do a show until their contacts ran out?

I'm confused I read today that when Howard was on K-rock they had high morning ratings and nothing the rest of the day. Now they have a O&A which has lower ratings then Howard and the same music they had before. What excitement are they going to create with this format? "Hey Fuel we'll play your new songs"

What I dont get is Ron & Fez just had a good book. The ratings they got must be higher than what they will get playing Alt-Rock in the evenings. Why would you choose lower ratings?
But I'll keep saying this. Fez needs to take care of himself. I'd rather see him get better than die of a heart attack on the air trying to make the rest of us happy.

I agree with you Fez's health comes 1st. I think he sounded happier and more into it on FreeFM. He had energy and drove discussions. On XM he didn't have the same energy.
Maybe Ron and Fez had some say in this. They could have seen that 2 shows is too much for Fez right now. Maybe Krock came to them and said we need you guys drivetime 4 to 7 and they passed cause its too much for Fez at this point. He can take the summer let the new format sink in for a bit and then relauch the show for the Fall book.
