View Full Version : Who is Your Favorite Religious Nut?
AgnosticJihad

I originally started this as a poll on my blog a while back, but decided to recreate it here as an open discussion in order to not limit people's choices.
My favorite has always been the late Reverend Falwell. Not only did I find his political and religious views completely abhorrent, but everytime I saw him on T.V. or in a documentary he would invariably say something so batshit insane I would end up collapsing into a laughing mess on the floor. However, since the fat bastard died a few days ago, I feel it only appropriate that I pick a new favorite.
As of right now, I'd have to say Pat Robertson is my new fav. He's just as funny as Falwell ever was, and may in fact be more insane, if that's at all possible. My only problem with Robertson (and Falwell, for that matter) is that to my knowledge, he has never performed or organized any acts of violence. I don't know about anyone else, but I find it hard to cosider someone a true religious fanatic unless they have murdered at least a few people in the name of whatever imaginary being they've devoted their lives to making look like an asshole.
Please let me know who your favorite fundamentalist fuck is, and please say why they are so. Also, don't feel you must limit yourself to evangalists; feel free to include such assholes as Osama bin Laden, Ruhollah Khomeini, Pope Julius "the Mad", or even the citizens of colonial Salem, Massachusets.

I remember back in the mid 1980's, there was a guy who broadcast out of LA overnights. He was this big burly guy with a beard, and he would sometimes wear an Army helmet. I've been trying for years to remember his name. I'd like to find out what ever happened to him. The only other thing I can remember about the show was they would show scenes of the "Jesus Saves" sign a lot. He was one wacky and entertaining fella!

There is a special class of religious nut, which just may well be an offshoot of general nut, but anyway said nuts make some great art.
Some web searches of 'visionary art' or religious art or beats me; should show some great art by people who believe, and let's be deadly serious for a second, because, nuts or no, these are people who really believe that they are seeing him, and speaking to them and/or vice versa, or that God has visited them, or told them to do something, or build something, or paint something. Some very unique trippy and scary stuff.
Maybe Bosch was seeing stuff, maybe Dali a bit, definately the guy who built the Coral Castle in Florida, and James Hapton? Wow. He was a janitor in Wash DC who truly believed God visited him and told him to build a throne for his return, and he did, out of tinfoil light bulbs electrical cord and cardboard, and lots more foil. Not bad for a DC janitor eh? This is only a tiny fraction of the 170+ pieces that the Throne comprises:
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/MizzleT/hamptonthrone.jpg
He told no one about it, no one even knew it existed until after he died. He just rented a garage and spent the last 14 years of his life building the thing. When it was discovered, and people saw it for the masterpiece it was, they donated it to the Smithsonian, it now occupies a central place in the Museum of American Art

Honorable mention goes to Newt Gingrich for being the latest positor of this little bit of religious insanity in 16th century... I mean today's politics:
Gingrich Assails 'Radical Secularism' (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/19/AR2007051900842_pf.html)
LYNCHBURG, Va., May 19 -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich decried a "growing culture of radical secularism" Saturday morning as he hailed the life of Liberty University's late founder, the Rev. Jerry Falwell, in an address to the school's 2007 graduating class.
In a speech heavy with religious allusions but devoid of hints about his presidential ambitions, Gingrich drew applause from the graduates and their families in the school's 12,000-seat football stadium when he demanded: "This anti-religious bias must end."
"In hostility to American history, the radical secularists insist that religious belief is inherently divisive," Gingrich said, deriding what he called the "contorted logic" and "false principles" of advocates of secularism in American society.
"Basic fairness demands that religious beliefs deserve a chance to be heard," he said during his 26-minute speech. "It is wrong to single out those who believe in God for discrimination. Yet, today, it is impossible to miss the discrimination against religious believers."
Gingrich goes to the top of the comedy pyramid-hat with that one.
From today's paper alone:
The National Association of State Boards of Education will elect officers in July, and for one office, president-elect, there is only one candidate: a member of the Kansas school board who supported its efforts against the teaching of evolution. (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/19/education/19board.html?pagewanted=print)
"Discirmination against believers" my ass!
"Anybody on the left who hopes that when people like Reverend Falwell disappear, that the opportunity to convert all of America has gone with him fundamentally misunderstands why institutions like this were created," Gingrich told reporters.
So it has the same goal as "Islamo-fascism"? Super!

I considering making these fucks my new favorite, but my only exposure to them has been when R&F had that foaming-at-the-mouth cunt on a few times. Their views are so horrificaly revolting that I can find no humor in it, thus preventing them from being my favorite. Falwell was funny because he would make a big deal out of the most rediculous things (such as the whole Teletubbies are promoting the homosexual agenda nonsense, because of course something that carries a purse must be gay and not female, that fat fucking retard), and Robertson just says crazy shit that is mostly harmless (like his ability to deflect hurricanes through the power of prayer).

black hebrew israelites are a group that says they are descendants of the israelites of the bible, who were black people (they assert). they're fringe, but only mildly racist from what i've read. the ones pictured here are the nyc ones who are insanely racist and used to stand across the street from macy's and call white people the devil and say we were the cause of all evil in the world (also there's something aboot an evil wizard who created white people). they would curse at mothers and little children. they were truly scum. they won the award for best race-baiting dipshits (http://www.villagevoice.com/specials/bestof/2003/detail.php?id=3892) from the village voice in 2003.

Nice one Telecaster7; I didnt know who this guy [Peter Popoff] was until I saw James Randi bust his act wide open on a NOVA special called 'Secrets of the Psychics' which every student I have ever taught has seen.
Randi shows how an Evangelist can know exact, specific, personal information about people he's never met before; specific ailments, names, even street addresses.
And it also shows that even after being shown to be an utter fraud, one can still go on; like Uri Geller.
Has Geller been mentioned yet? He was the friggin Elvis of Spoon Bending Mind Reading dudes, and on the same special above, a famous clip of Uri Geller getting busted live on The Tonight Show. Cringe was never better then watching a superstar psychic flop spectacularly as Carson [who was a magician at one time] just watched him crash and burn, again coz Randi knew that everything he could do, could be done with trickery.
Just watching this segment and some other Randi stuff and I can bend keys, spoons, read minds, make objects move without touching them, even do the David Blaine levitation; coz it's all bullshit.
The Link Shows Randi showing some of his tricks, and how he busted Popoff and Geller, Geller live w/ Johnny.

Perrynoid has many fans (of which, I'm one), but I wouldn't really call him a religious nut.

since R&F started talking about it on the show, I figured I'd revive the topic.

My favorite would have to L Ron Hubbard

This guy was truly an evil genius and religious nutjob. The man started his own church and navy and was investigated by the FBI, IRS and secret service. The fact that he has Tom Cruise as a spokesman and churches in almost every major metropolitan city is a testament to the deranged intelligence of this "Thetan" and his god "Xanax".

[QUOTE=AgnosticJihad;1320179]I originally started this as a poll on my blog a while back, but decided to recreate it here as an open discussion in order to not limit people's choices.
My favorite has always been the late Reverend Falwell. Not only did I find his political and religious views completely abhorrent, but everytime I saw him on T.V. or in a documentary he would invariably say something so batshit insane I would end up collapsing into a laughing mess on the floor.[QUOTE]
My first choice is the character Flip Wilson used to do from the Church of What's Happening Now.
But seriously, my all-time fave is Reverend Ike from back in the day.
Wendy, I noticed the pic you posted caught the good reverend when he was dressing more conservatively....

I'm so glad they brought this up again on today's show. They guy I was talking about in my previous post was, in fact, Gene Scott.

Holy shit. I found this guy on MySpace. I don't know if it's really him or not, but if not whoever it is does a really good impression. If you send him messages, he'll respond. I was talking to the guy for hours last night. Plus, he's got like a dozen videos on his page which provide hours of entertainment. Some of the funniest shit I've seen in a long time, especially the video where he starts quoting Snagglepuss, Beatles & Beck songs. Someone seriously needs to get this guy off of public access and onto real TV. They'd get fucking rich.
