View Full Version : One of the XM Satellites out today?

In case anyone was wondering (because I was), the reason for the shitty reception today appears to be because one of the satellites is down.

I was driving home and getting really spotty reception. I started getting a little panicky because I dropped my Inno last night and thought it might be broken.

But apparently one of the satellites is down right now, which is why if you look at the reception on the units, there's no Terrestrial bars in a lot of the country.

I'm getting perfect reception from at home in the home dock, but it's all satellite...the terrestrial feed, which is linked to one of the other satellites is down. Might also explain why Earl was having pad data problems early in the show, too.

I wonder how many other people have had this problem...if it's nationwide or just isolated spots. Anyway, long story short, today is the day for online listening, probably.

lots of problems in my car. OK at home, although I spent a lot of time aiming the antenna yesterday.

Yes, I too was wondering what was up. I had shitty reception all morning on both the motorcycle and in the truck. I actually pulled over and checked that the antenna wasn't dangling of the side of the truck. Thanks for the info.

I usually get crappy reception from the satellite, but decent reception from the repeaters in my office. I am getting zero from both right now. I wonder whats going on.

K.C.
05-21-2007, 09:13 AM
I actually almost started taking my Inno apart to see if the antenna was busted.

Looking on XM411 just a few minutes ago, it's pretty widespread. I hope it doesn't last too long, because the only place I'm getting perfect reception right now is at home.

In the car, or handheld is very weak right now.

At home you can aim the antenna to get the perfect satellite reception, which is the only way it's working right now...if it lasts all day, maybe I'll give XM a call to see what's up and whether it'll take a while for them to fix the satellite that's down.

...not that anyone in their customer service would actually know the answer. Maybe they'll give me some free service, though.

Chimee
05-21-2007, 12:22 PM
Mine just says "No Signal" and at first I thought it was just the trees because I've had that problem before, but no matter what I did I wouldn't get any signal at all. Then, I take my Inno off the dock and walk outside, full signal and perfect reception, but then my other Inno wouldn't work outside and my car unit doesn't work at all.

Am in Chicago and had HORRIBLE problems. I guess you don't know how much we rely on the receivers (terrestrial) when listening to satelite. 'you don't know what you got till its gone. I was thinking today that is the reason that Sirius receivers are so big - no terrestrial??

Does Ron and Fez have any fans outside the NY area? One guy from LA, and me -

I suppose that's why the show is hard to listen to when all they do is talk about NY...

The way I understand it, it wasn't the terrestrial repeaters that were the problem, it was the satellite that relays to them that was acting up so there was no signal to repeat.

Pretty much everyone relies heavily on the terrestrial repeaters except for people just way out in the middle of the country in huge open space areas, so it's not just in your area.

As for Sirius, their coverage sucks because of their lack of them. I've driven cars with Sirius in it, and on an average day I can drive the same route with one of each service. With XM, I rarely ever pick up a dead spot anywhere (except for today of course)...Sirius, I pick up several dead spots on the same roads.

yeah, as far as I know, the online shouldn't be affected by anything. Pretty sure it works on the exact same tech as 92.3 or any other streaming online radio.

That's the way to go, if you're at home, until they get it fixed.

XM sure is having problems, all the people cancelling after the O and A thing and now this mess. Once they give everyone the refund for the service interuption and the loss from O and A they have to be looking at a loss in the millions. Even if the refund is only 2 days that woud be a refund of $.89. That multiplied by all the subscribers adds up fast.

Makes you wonder if karma does exist.

Heres what happened:

XM Satellite Radio's XM-3 satellite experienced some type of in-orbit difficulty Monday that caused service outages for an unknown amount of customers. In order for the problem to be fixed, XM had to perform a software upgrade on the satellite, which required the unit to be re-oriented to be corrected.

According to Wedbush Morgan's William Kidd, who confirmed the problem with XM, the process of re-orienting the satellite required it to stop broadcasting. The analyst said listeners may have been without service for at least a couple hours, and that the company's call centers are believed to have been "overloaded" with inquiries.

Kidd said XM-3 is an east coast-centric satellite that also serves the company's repeater network. Because of this, he said, "the absence of XM-3's signal is causing many of XM's subscribers to be without service.

The Wedbush Morgan statement issued by Kidd said XM believes the issue is resolved and that the satellite should be broadcasting again soon. The analyst said that until XM-3 is back up and running, "there exists a very low probability of a very large problem."

As of press time, XM had failed to issue a statement on its website about the problem and did not return SkyREPORT's attempts at obtaining comment.
