Nymphomania is a term used by laymen to label women whose sex drive is considered by them to be "excessive." It's a term used exclusively for women and it's obviously subjective because there are no agreed upon standards for how much sex is appropriate and how much is excessive.

The current DSM doesn not list nymphomania as a pathology, although they did until 1987! Only hypoactive sexual desire disorder is listed along these lines and that refers to an ABSENCE or deficiency of desire. There is also a sexual aversion disorder and female sexual arousal disorder among others.

The origin of the word "nyphomania" is Latin, with the word "nymphae" meaning the inner lips of the vulva. The word "mania" means madness or frenzy.
