I haven't heard O&A's show outside of Opie's "We don't know yet" comment, but a mitigating factor is that the webpage's title header on the browser window still says Free-FM.
The optimist in me says they are re-doing the lineup, to stop with the three hour shows.

Im assuming freeFm is not going to be reborn as FreeFM202 which means the change can only be disappointing.
I absolutely love the XM show but being a NYer, the FreeFM show really means something to me. It feels like more than a show, like Im listening to people I know, talk about things going on around me in the same way I talk to my friends.
I hope they will still have some way of doing it, whether it just be on another station or just a different shift or whatever.

No...larry wachs, nick dipaolo, and radiochick all said "we'll see you tomorrow at the same time blah blah blah on their shows yesterday." none of them seemed to know that anything was up. it would seem irresponsible for CBS to so abruptly cancel an entire slew of shows without notifying the shows' own hosts in advance! or to at least allow the hosts to say goodbye and let the listeners know where they were heading.
Now that i think about it, actually, Nick Dipaolo yesterday really did not know a T.H.I.N.G. a listener said, "Jeez, Nick, i know it's only a matter of time before you get kicked off for saying something." and Nick just joked back, like, "hey, hey, way to bring the mood down...no, i expect to be doing this gig for a long time" (and without any sarcasm, too)

is anyone listening to free fm right now? wtf is going on?
A good friend pointed out to me this weekend that radio really did seem worse than the music industry, and I think I finally have to agree with him - they eat their own like they can't get enough of it - there is almost no reward for actual talent - the ones who make long careers at one place really only have luck on their side - the larger the market, the less likely anything good will last because it often takes time for anything good to get noticed - and time is not something the larger the markets can afford to "waste."
Utter fucking bullshit.
I don't think there was anyone of the D.C./WJFK regulars who didn't want Ron and Fez to be happy and succeed in New York; XM put them back in the city they wanted to be, and FreeFM allowed them to be back on the airwaves and connected to an audience they missed - one that rewarded them with a "monster" book - even before the numbers were made public, you knew they had to be good because talking ratings, in the first place, is not something the buddies normally do.
FUCK!
R&F proved how two shows could/should/can be done. Different identities - different audiences - different flavors - both brilliant because of what the two shows shared: Ron and Fez (and Dave and Earl). I missed having the FM show on XM, and held out hope that once they "proved" themselves that XM & FM would come together and reward them, but at the same time I completely got why they wanted it this way - at least it was available online. And just as the DC listeners continued to follow and support The Hideout when they went to Florida, so diud A LOT of the Washington area people support and enjoy the FreeFM "Ron and Fez Show." It's a real, genuine loss.
The radio industry is filled with cowards with no respect for what they have when they have it - they always need someone else to come along and show them what can be done. CBS' reactionary branding of "FreeFM" at the onset always looked foolish - let local radio be LOCAL. Not every city has to have the same 5 shows. Satellite radio can/should be used to make these available nationally - the internet can connect these worldwide.
Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!

The rumor has been that they are giving more control back to the local stations. Thats why some of the other cities have already dropped the free format. I hope YSP keeps their shows. Their other talk shows are pretty good. Not as good as RnF or O&A but much better than the rest of the lineup on 923.
I couple of days ago the Radio Chick was proudly talking about her brand new more interactive website. I guess she didn't get the memo either. I just looked at her site for the first time and it says:
isn't good, Chick fans. They blew up the station, and there won't be much talking on it anymore. Check my blog in a couple hours and I'll tell you more. <

From FMQB
=
The countdown for the new format at 92.3 FM in New York City started this morning after Opie & Anthony finished off their morning show. At 5pm today, the return of the WXRK call letters and 92.3 K-Rock will replace the failed experiment know as Free-FM.
Anchored by O&A in the mornings (from 6-9am), K-Rock will feature music from the '90s and today, with a core of U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Linkin Park, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Papa Roach, Green Day, and Foo Fighters, according to a pitch sent by CBS sales which also touts "K-Rock has a history of dominance in reaching young men" and "delivers a young, active consumer - that will drive advertiser results." It also promises to super serve 25 to 34 year olds.
The sales pitch also states, "K-Rock was a 20 year old rock brand... known for ratings success, great events, and strong advertising partnerships. After almost 2 years without a true Rock station in New York --- we believe the prospects for success are now greater with K-Rock. The good news is that none of our competitors filled the void we left in 2005... and now we have a second chance to bring K-Rock back to New York."
Now that summer is approaching, CBS promises that, "K-Rock will be everywhere our listeners are starting today. From the coolest concerts in the tri-state area, to the beaches of New Jersey and Long Island, to the best night spots, to malls, parks, rest stops, sporting events, and much much more. K-Rock will be EVERYWHERE!"
The bottom line from CBS sales pitch promises, "We will guarantee that K-Rock is a great rock station --- filling a void in New York radio--- and delivering results for our clients!!!"

Now they're going back to their bland rock format they had after Hoo Hoo for a fucking dog's age.
Eat a fat dick K-ROCK.

If they had only promoted and stood behind Free-FM like they promise to promote K-Rock, we wouldn't be having this discussion...
For real, but what can we expect in this knee jerk society now.
They don't try to weather a storm with a show to see if it's really a problem or just a media blitz, they just fire their talent.
So why would we expect them to give a new Talk format a real chance?

From the Radio Chick's blog:
Hi everyone
Free FM in NY has flipped formats to music. That's how it goes in radio, one day your employed, the next day you aren't.
I was told the decision to flip was a result of low revenues, a series of many poor management decisions made over many months, and a post-Imus environment that doesn't allow talk shows like the ones on FreeFM to do what they need to do to get ratings..that is talk about race, sex and other potentially offensive and provocative material. I'm not telling you this, this is what I was told.
For us, we loved doing the show with you and for you everyday. Despite whatever annoying and infuriating crap that was happening at the station, our 3 hours with you was a joy. Butch, Chuck, JC and I always had fun in that studio together with you from 3-6. It was the one saving grace.
I can't tell you what's up in our future, we just got the news a few hours before you did. That's the way this industry behaves. I'm still making phone calls informing alot of our colleagues and friends.

it amazes me how quick they give a show the boot on the Talk Format. it takes time for people to get into a show. it's not at all like music where people stay for a format, in talk you have to like the personalities.

who goes to the radio for music anymore? why would i turn it on and maybe hear a good song, bad song or a commercial when i can plug in my ipod or a cd? talk makes sense on the radio because its something new every time you listen in.... grrrr. they fuck with my emotions

for real. why would we need the radio for songs we can download and put on our Ipod and LISTEN ON REPEAT WITHOUT COMMERCIAL INTERRUPTION if we wanted to! radio listeners put up with 7 minutes of commercials every 15 minutes so they can listen to LIVE people discussing LIVE issues. "Live" music on the radio does not exist.

Free FM/N.Y. Out, K-Rock Returning
K-Rock's Back
As ALL ACCESS was the first to confirm, CBS RADIO FM Talk WFNY-F (92.3 FREE FM)/NEW YORK has dropped its embattled Talk format and is stunting with a montage of NEW YORK-themed clips punctuated by the phrase "today at 5" excerpted from a TV news promo.
ALL ACCESS has learned that the format will be a return to the Rock format and "92.3 K-ROCK" slogan dropped by the station when it flipped to Talk in JANUARY 2006. CBS VP and KROQ/L.A. programmer KEVIN WEATHERLY is in town consulting the flip, which ALL ACCESS hears will lean heavily towards '90s rock with some currents and '80s in the mix. OPIE AND ANTHONY will remain in mornings, but PD JOHN MAINELLI and the weekday airstaff, including NICK DIPAOLO, LESLIE GOLD, and RON AND FEZ are out and the new airstaff won't start until TUESDAY at the earliest.
MAINELLI is returning to his consulting business -- reach the veteran programmer, who previously programmed WABC-A and WOR-A/NEW YORK, at johnmainelli@msn.com.
The stunting occurred after OPIE AND ANTHONY's show THURSDAY at 9a. The hosts noted that they had been told to attend a meeting with GM TOM CHIUSANO immediately after their show. And the station's website is carrying a countdown clock aimed at 5p ET.
Power Points
ALL ACCESS has obtained the station's power-point presentation for the flip, which includes this Q&A:
Q: What will K-ROCK sound like musically?
A: We will play great rock -- from the '90s and today. You'll hear great rock from U2, NIRVANA, PEARL JAM, METALLICA, SMASHING PUMPKINS, LINKIN PARK, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, SOUNDGARDEN, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, PAPA ROACH, GREEN DAY, FOO FIGHTERS ... and much much more.
Q: What is your target audience?
A: K-ROCK will become a dominant station in NEW YORK delivering men --- superserving 25-34-year-olds.
Q: How will you promote your change back to K-ROCK?
A: SUMMER 2007 is here ... and K-ROCK will be everywhere our listeners are starting today. From the coolest concerts in the tri-state area, to the beaches of New Jersey and Long Island, to the best night spots, to malls, parks, rest stops, sporting events, and much much more. K-ROCK will be EVERYWHERE!
Q: What happens to the schedules I purchased on FREE FM?
A: Although we expect an increase in advertiser demand immediately, we will live up to the schedules we committed to you. We believe in our partnerships and will do everything possible to fulfill your expectations of us.

Yeah, and I don't have to get fed the popular crap that is played on the radio these days (WTF is Emo anyway?). I can get my own quirky mix of blues, alternative, metal, punk, celtic and country anytime on my iPod or by switching to any one of the 30 presets on my Roadie 2.
The only use I had for FM radio was to listen to the Buddys every night, the sacred 3 hours of every night when I would fold laundry, drink a beer, laugh a lot and think to myself that Ron Bennington is a Fucking Genius. That and I would listen to the local traffic report on NJ 101.5 for my morning commute.
Now, Radio is Dead to Me.
What chance R&F start sharing the web with Stugots and Lenay D on ThereIsNoRadio.com?

so they're basically reverting back to what the station was before Stern left, only instead of Stern there will be O&A (who I'm sure will have a LOT of restraints in place) and the same tired "rock" playlists that they had before.
This is why I gave up on radio years ago - same old garbage.

aside from r&f, there's no reason to listen to it. Satellite & portable media players do a much better & more personal job of providing entertainment.

Well, they blew Free FM up. While I like that the Free FM concept is dead, I wish that R&F on Free FM wasn't. I guess they're going back to the Howard Stern concept of a morning show and music the rest of the day.
That idea really really stinks, and it didn't work originally. Still, I guess New York needs a current rock station.
Damn, I really hope I'll be hearing R&F in a half hour. But Radio Chick's website says she's canned, and Nick Dipalo is toast as well. i think only Lovelines will be there at night.
All I have to comfort me are podcasts and XM.
