The Oscar-winning actor, who turned 82 in January, said during an interview on Good Morning America Thursday that, after 50 years in front of the camera, he's calling it a career.
"I'm not able to work anymore as an actor at the level I would want to," Newman, who won the Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer in 1957, told GMA. "You start to lose your memory, your confidence, your invention. So that's pretty much a closed book for me…I've been doing it for 50 years. That's enough."
If they had a Mount Rushmore for actors, he'd be on there
Maybe the second greatest American actor.
Best of luck to ya, Paul.

"hey hannrihan! your wife's a dyke!"
probably my favorite movie of all time and he won't even acknowledge it when asked questions about the movie.
my all time favorite paul newman line, another from slapshot, "you better get a man in that kid's life or he's gonna have a cock in his mouth before you can say Jack Robinson."

I caught this on BBC website a couple days ago and they had a list of past stories about him on the sidebar: donates big check to charity; will do one last movie; donates big check to charity; is unhappy about college binge drinking day named after him (his son ODed back in the day); donated big check to charity; pulled from a burning race car unhurt; donated big check to charity; surpirse appearance at children's charity as a clown with a big check... One of the articles said Newman's Own has made over $200 million for charities over the years.
Coolest Man of the 20th Century. Definitely my biggest man-crush.
And quintes... quintecen.... best role is definintely "The Hustler". I bought "Butch Cassidy" in Bangkok and "The Sting" a couple days ago in Cambodia. I'm still hoping to find "The Hustler" and "Cool Hand Luke". It would be close between the two but I think Fast Eddie is such a deep and dynamic character that any other actor would have made the movie just a movie about pool.
Oh yeah, and next year he'll have his 50th wedding anniversary. To the same woman even. Lucky girl!

I think you can really make the argument that "Slap Shot" is probably the greatest sports movie ever....not only because there are so many great scenes and one liners (like when Strother Martin's character tells the story about Eddie Shore and the guy who couldn't stop masturbating for example) but its such a great satire on what the NHL had become by the mid-late 1970s
I still have yet to see all of "Nobody's Fool"

Well when I met him he was shorter then anticipated, was driving a VW bug with a 'ILUV2RACE' or something as a license; my brother stayed at his house at his daughter's graduation party, and met the short man when offered pop corn and a beer in his CT place.

That's pretty freaking cool! I never got to meet him, but he's been here many times. He used to race at Summit Point, near here. He even brought Tom Cruise with him a few times. My sister met him when she worked at Dart Drug WAYYYY back in the day.
