View Full Version : Good Movies with Bad Sequels

The "Jaws" thread got me thinking about good movies that have horrible sequels. I have 2 nominations:
Poseidon Adventure 2 - The 1974 Poseidon Adventure was a great movie, the sequel had Michael Caine as a tugboat captain (who wears leather shoes and dress pants at sea) and Karl Malden as his bearded side-kick. They happen to be near the Poseidon when it capsizes (luckily the tidal wave didn't wreck them) and they decide to claim salvage rights. There's also a sub-plot with Telly Savalas and a band of terrorists entering the Posidon to steal some warheads (or something) that the Poseidon was carrying. Really awful.
Men in Black 2 - MIB, great fun movie. MIIB, a slow tedious bore. Rather than just have some alien machine that gives Tommy Lee Jones his memory back, they spend most of the movie trying to get him to remember. Bad.

Good call. One small problem - NO BELUSHI.
Another one:
"Back to the Future" - One of all time favorite movies.
"Back to the Future II" - What a muddled mess. They go into the future, then back to 1955 of the original movie and see themselves. I bought the BTTF box set and can't watch II.

Breakin' 2 (Electric Bugaloo)
my friends and i will use electric bugaloo for any sequel, to this day. "pirates of the caribbean 2: electric bugaloo"
highlander 2 was my most disappointing sequel. matrix 2 and 3 were a bit hard to stomach, but the highlander sequel just made no sense.

I agree with the majority here as far movies already mentioned. for example, The Rocky's after number 3 sucked. Back to future 2 and 3 were definitely nowhere near up to par. Grease 2 couldnt have sucked more and the same goes for Staying Alive. Stallone needs to stick to acting something he does a hell of alot better than directing. who the hell gave him the idea to direct in the first place. There are so many bad sequels. where do I begin!!
This is my partial list of the horrid sequels that I can think of and that I stupidly paid to see either in the theather or by renting it.
Gremlims 2, Airplane 2, Bev.hills cop 3(sucked worse than 2), Rambo 2 and 3 and I couldnt bring myself to watch 3. Nightmare on elm st. 2. I noticed in the Nightmare Series all of the odd number ones were descent while the even numbered ones sucked. I really was very disappointed with the Matrix trilogies. The first Matrix had such promise and 2 and 3 just totally sucked ass in my book. I can go on and on but I will leave it at those for now.

I actually think MIIB was a decent sequel, considering that without the newness of an original story, the ambition it takes to get a new story on film, and the studios' penchant for pushing unnecessary sequals for the sake of an easy buck, it's really easier to talk about good sequals than bad ones.
Biggest Electric Boogaloo has to be Caddyshack. It's a snuff film really.
I still think the Matrix sequels work as action movies, but conceptually they might have been "The Passion of the Christ: Reloaded" & "Revolution".
Star Wars prequals should have had George Lucas exiled to an island somewhere where the only movies available are all staring the Olson twins.
My other notably disappointing sequels: Die Hard II, Godfather III, American Pie II, Terminator III, Red Dragon.

Oh, Man! I thought Wrath of Khan was the best of all of the Star Trek (not Next Gen) movies.

Speed Zone, a sequel so bad that it couldn't use it's real name (Cannonball Run 3) or get any of it's original actors. Even Dom Delouise said no, like he had something better to do. I was 12 and I wanted my $7.00 back, the theater burned and the cast drawn and quartered.

Karate Kid II much worse than the origional, but somehow watchable. Karate Kid III AWEFUL! The Next Karate Kid never happened I tell ya, I won't even acknowledge it's existence.

Godfather I & II - Two of the best movies ever made.
Godfather III - Michael Corleone is a wimp who gets involved with the Vatican bank. A new character is introduced, Sonny's illegitimate son, who's in love with his - ahem - beautiful cousin. Burn the negative and don't look back.
