I love discovering a great independent film. I have not gone to a movie theater in almost a year as the Hollywood movies are just crap anymore. I perticularly love catching these little irish/British films like Waking Ned Devine or The Englishman who went up a hill... I really love the atmosphere in those films. The Wind That Shakes The Barley looks like a good one.

I love 'em. I got one down the street that also has a full menu and alcohol served right in the theatre. It rocks.

A little Irish independent film called ONCE is out and playing at Landmark Sunshine Cinemas in the city and a couple of other places. It is a beautiful work of art, one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Wind that Shakes the Barley was very good as well.

I just looked at the trailer for Once... It looks terrific! I will see both of these films very soon.

You will be blown away, trust me. A critic (even though I usually hate them) said that it's a "modern day musical that blows away any of the multi-zillion dollar budget Hollywood musicals like Chicago or Dreamgirls" which I totally agree with.

Better than art house theaters are art house theaters that also show revivals of older movies. Even if it's just for a week or a day, there are some theaters that will show prints (note: prints, on reels, not on DVD or tape) of older movies. And they range the gamut from pre-war until like last year but you really forget how great movies can be, even if you've seen them a hundred times on DVD, until you see them on a truly giant screen on film, especially during midnight showings. And they also show really independent flicks too. Examples include:
Cinema Arts Centre (http://www.cinemaartscentre.org/) on Long Island
Music Box Theatre (http://www.musicboxtheatre.com/) in Chicago

It says you're from Chicago but have you ever been to the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens? They play classic films all the time which if you become a member for like 50 bucks you can go to all the showings for free for a year. It's really amazing.

I have always loved Foreign & Independent Cinema. I guess I was lucky to grow up in a comparatively small town which had, among it's citizenry, a GIANT in the world of Independent Cinema in the form of John Waters who was accessible, friendly, highly informed & informative to all who approached him, he introduced me to the fringe world, the brilliant corners, as it were, of Cinema. There is nothing more inspiring than a good, enthusiastic teacher. ANYWAY, there are a few Art House Theaters here in Baltimore, my favorite is the Charles, prolly cuz it's something that still exists from my youth & it's still in my old stomping grounds, which adds an element of romanticism to the whole mixture for me. I can sit and watch just about anything & find some kinda merit in it, be it intentional or not, but it's the Art films of the world that leave me w/ a transcendent feeling from the pleasure of their experience. I feel like a magical being as I ruminate over the images & their meanings in my mind. Hollywood films are more like crank, whereas Art films are peyote!!!

Thanks for the links. I just checked the Cinema Arts Centre site. The 'Coming Soon' page says they're going to be showing the film "Once," although it doesn't say when. I'd love to see it. I'll have to contact them to find out when it's going to be shown.

I checked that website and it seems to be playing several very good films at the moment, such as Black Book(WWII thriller with a twist), Away From Her, and Waitress. Paprika is also playing there soon which was an amazing film.
