In an interview with GQ magazine that's currently on newsstands, the typically outspoken Tigers designated hitter said Latin players have replaced African-Americans as baseball's most prevalent minority because they are easier to control.

"I called it years ago. What I called is that you're going to see more black faces, but there ain't no English going to be coming out. … [It's about] being able to tell [Latin players] what to do -- being able to control them," he told the magazine.

"Where I'm from, you can't control us. You might get a guy to do it that way for a while because he wants to benefit, but in the end, he is going to go back to being who he is. And that's a person that you're going to talk to with respect, you're going to talk to like a man.

"These are the things my race demands. So, if you're equally good as this Latin player, guess who's going to get sent home? I know a lot of players that are home now can outplay a lot of these guys."

Gary should be happy he's not white

Wow. How sad.

Apparently Gary Sheffield has no idea what the real definition of the word "man" is.

I suppose I'll never understand the warped minds of people who believe they have the "right" to act however they want, and to say it's a racial thing is to belittle those of his race who have carried themselves with dignity throughout their lives.

I read that this morning and started laughing. He doesn't understand the changing element of the league. Sheffield has always been a goddamned idiot in my opinion & quite honestly he's a disgrace to the game of baseball.

Don't forget that this is a guy who cheated the fans of Milwaukee by purposefully striking out & making throwing errors while in Milwaukee to force a trade in 1991. The man has zero credibility with me.

I think he is saying something profound, and that we all listen closely. I belive he is an asset to baseball, and will remain an ambassador to the game as long as he hits 30 home runs a year while playing in Detroit.

Otherwise he is the most ignorant man in the game. No regards for his fellow players. I have an Idea maybe Gary has a little racism in him. Hmmm...

He makes an excellent point. What team has ever employed a player that is a loud-mouthed, pain-in-the-ass that doesn't listen to anyone and is constantly in trouble both on and off the field???

Thankfully, the owners of the MLB teams are far too ethical to sign all of these talented, sure-fire HOFers because they know they won't show up for extra batting practice or smile in the team pictures. Sure, they will help them win championships and make millions of dollars for the team, but CHARACTER (and not being an english-speaking black person) is what really matters.

Look at all the black players baseball teams have signed in the past. They're all "uncle toms." Here are some examples:

- Albert Belle
- Barry Bonds
- Carl Everett
- Doc Gooden
- Tony Phillips
- Milton Bradley
- Mel Hall
- Gary Sheffield

I know he caused a little bit of a stir on his way out, but it's amazing what a different person he seemed to be for 2+ years as a Yankee. And I don't mean to look at him through Yankee-colored glasses, I knew he was a clown & was fully prepared for his signing to blow up in the Yankees collective faces. For the first year, though (almost two), you didn't hear a peep out of the guy.

He wouldn't shave after signing his big contract in LA & became the first player in Dodger team history to take the field wearing any facial hair more than a moustache. But when he came to NY, it was just a pencil-thin moustache, as per Georgie's rules. He forced trades from other teams, yet with the Yanks he played the role of good teammate.

You almost forgot what a jerkoff he could be for a while there. But it obviously was bubbling just under the surface, because ignorant shit like this can't be explained away by anything more than that...he is a clueless asshole.

He would be driven out of baseball. I'm sure the rest of that team ordonez, perez, rodriguez... will love that amazingly racist statement. So did he just stereotype his people as uppity?

The very fact that Elijah Dukes (http://www.theledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070530/BREAKING/70530001)is still on a major league roster negates Sheffield's point. IF it was about race, he would be gone. But it is & always will be about talent.

He's baaaaaaaack..... (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2935737)

Gary Sheffield has strong words about New York Yankees manager Joe Torre, former Yankees teammate Derek Jeter, San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds and steroids in an interview with HBO's "Real Sports" that will air Tuesday.

Sheffield says Torre treats black players differently from white players and says Jeter, who is from a mixed-race marriage, "ain't all the way black," during the interview with Andrea Kremer, as reported by Newsday.

As for Bonds, Sheffield says "if I took what Barry Bonds took, why don't I look like him?" He also says that he never took steroids because "the bottom line is steroids is something you stick in your butt -- period."

If anything, he's sure is hysterical....

As per Peter Abraham, Torre's best friend is Bob Gibson and he treats Derek Jeter like a son. Why can't people accept that Sheff is just an asshole? He's a talented asshole, but still an asshole.

He's like Rickey Henderson without the charm.

i agree and ive always said that about him, especially when he was a Yankee. I liked him in pinstripes because for most of his tenure all he did was go out, play the game hard and play to win. thats all i ever want to see out of the players on my favorite team. but when the guy started to open his mouth you could tell he was still the same asshole he was from years before.

Sheff would probably say the former is a "sellout" and the latter is a "zebra".

I think that if the choice is between a large penis or ruling the world and being free from discrimination, most black men would choose being white.

So black men who say racist things should get a free pass because of past/current discrimination?

Isn't it MORE racist to hold them to a different standard?

Maybe the only other guy in baseball with less credibility than Sheffield. He's been on 8 different teams in the past 6 years. I guess all the GM's are racist, too. No chance he just has an attitude problem, just like Shef.
