Where are some good, relatively inexpensive public golf courses around NYC? (say like 40 min driving, tops).
I've been going to a place called Stone Dock up near New Paltz (since I'm up there climbing all the time) but I'd like to go some place new. It's $20 for 18 (9 hold course), walking. I went a few times up by Saratoga and up by Lake Placid and they were $25-$30, but on 18 hole courses so I didn't mind it. Any places around the city that are even remotely comparable in price? I don't mind so much about the qualuty or dififculty or whatever - I'm a total beginner and I stink either way!

Pinch Brook is a short course though, its good for beginers but tough to gauge how good you are or how much better youre getting because of its short length. try Flanders Valley or Sunset Valley as well, theyre all part of the Morris County Park Golf Courses. Its 9 bucks to play both those courses after 4 as well.

Do any of you that live in the NY area play Bethpage ever? I know that it is getting more expensive after the US open was there but is it still reasonably priced for NY residents?

these (https://www.nycteetimes.com/teetime.cfm) are 42.50 each, walking. the twin courses pelham/split rock are very nice (with split rock being a more challenging course. the others i have not seen, so i offer no recommendations.
edit: here's a full list (http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_things_to_do/facilities/af_golf.html) of the public nyc courses. i belive van cortlandt is the oldest public course in the country, btw.

bethpage red is like $41 on weekends (it's the 2nd best there) but the black course is $100 for residents. btw, the us open is coming back there in 2009.

A couple of things:
I went to the Open at Bethpage, and I never went out there to play because you'd always hear those stories about guys sleeping in their cars for tee times. I was told by a local, however, that if you go out there as a single, the odds are good that you'll get out by 10:00, and it's true. I get there around 8, get on a list, have some breakfast, hit some balls, and I always get out. I love the Red course, and I'm too chicken to play the Black.
There's a course up in Pearl River that people have been telling me about. Blue Something or other. I've played Centenial up at the north end of Westchester - not bad but kind of a hike from the city. If you're going to take a hike (and you're willing to spend $125), up in Milford CT there's a course called Great River, and man, is that a nice course.
Of the city courses, I like the one on Flatbush the best. I don't know what it's called, we call it the Royal and Ancient St. Flatbush. I played Pelham once, and hated it. Buggy as hell (seriously if you go, bring the most cancerous bug repellent you can find). Van Cortland is cool - and it is the oldest public course in the country. I also like that you can take the 1 train there.
Douglaston is alright. A decent round of golf. Kinda short, but reasonably priced and easy to get in and out.
I like the Pebble Beach of Par 3s out at Rockaway. Park at Riis Park, and walk 5 minutes. Good times, but you have to keep your head up, because newbie golfers are spraying shots all over the place.
Lastly, is there any interest in a RF.net golf outing? That could be good times. I would definitely help put something like that together, if we could get 3 or 4 threesomes together. Have a little tournament, maybe a closest to the hole contest, longest drive.
Maybe we could lure 2007 US Open Champion Golfman to join us.
Seriously, though, I'm running this up the flagpole. Any interest?

It's Crystal Springs, and I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner. It's a tough course, and it doesn't help that the rangers there are some of the biggest asses walking the planet. They're usually unfriendly, and will tell you to speed up no matter how fast you play.

Richter Park in Danbury is municipal and consistently ranked top 50 in US

Are those rates for county residents only, or anyone?
I play some of the bergen county courses, but they're only worthwhile (and cheap) if you're a county resident and have a county card. Beyond that, they're more money ($40 per 18 vs $18 per 18 w/card), and if you're out of state they basically rape you.
Try Spook Rock in Suffern, NY. Twilight rate for 18 holes (walking) is $29, I believe. Not sure what time twilight starts there, but it's probably sometime around 2 or 3.

i play the Knoll pretty much every saturday, though oddly enough I hate it. I only play it because we can always get out whenever we want. but i call it the Viet-Knoll because every 7 seconds youre covering your head and dodging a Fore call. the private Knoll, where my father belongs, is a million times better.

Apple Greens is in the Hudson valley, not the Catskills, and it's nice but every time you miss the fairway, it's like you end up in an apple orchard, which is nice as scenery, but annoying. That said, my friend and I will probably go play there next week. This weekend I'll be up by Lake Placid, and I'm thinking of hitting the course at Whiteface. I hear it's really hilly, but it might be a nice change.
My boyfriend? I was asking him about some of the courses up there. He's all, "You're not ready for those courses." "Which courses am I ready for?" I asked. "Inter!"
What a dork.
