I'm sure this has been asked before, but what does the "H" in "Jesus H. Christ" stand for anyway?

Some biblical scholars believe it to be Hubert while others aver that it is Horatio.

After consultation with various biblical scholars, the consensus arrived at is that Jesus' middle name is "fucking" not "Holy" or even "Hubert."
As a quick bit of sophistry that amply demonstrates this, try hitting your thumb with a hammer and see what you yell.

According to Webster's dictionary, "blasphemy" is:
1a: the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God
1b: the act of claiming the attributes of deity
2: irreverence toward something considered sacred or inviolable
While I would argue that you can't show irreverance for something that doesn't exist. I appologize if I offended anybody. It was meant as a joke.
HOWEVER, we are here to exchange ideas. And if you're comfortable in the belief of a god or gods and expect me to respect that idea, it's only fair for you to respect the ideas of those who believe in different gods or no gods.
Perhaps one of the theists out there could explain why they care if someone of a different (equally plausable, or implausable) religious persuasion or an atheists says about their god(s). Can't the gods defend themselves or do they rely upon their worshipers for that. You'd figure being(s) who supposedly created the universe with a word would be able to fight his, her or their own battles.
Finally, I must point out that Webster's definition of blashphemy (1b) would mean all religious people are blasphemers as they believe they contain a spark of the divine - a soul and that they were created in god's image. Perehaps that could be addressed in a reply as well.

I think it has something to do with 2000 years of "intellectuals" (and I use the term VERY loosely) treating us like retards for believing in the Judeo-Christian God.
My personal stance is this: I just believe in God. I don't go out and proselytize to anyone. I'm not knocking on doors handing out pamphlets. I also don't judge anyone else based upon their religion or lack thereof, or based upon their morality as compared to the morales put forth in the Bible. Basically, I have my own beliefs, and I don't bother ANYONE with them. So it's a little annoying for some people (some atheists in particular) to treat me like I'm a mental patient for foolishly believing in a supreme being.
It'd be like me coming up to you and laughing in your face for NOT believing in a god. It's a matter of respect. I don't care what anyone says about my god, but I might care what it is you say about me as a believer in that god.

You feel persecuted for believing in God? LMFAO.
I guesss Christians are tollerant of all religious beliefs. We'll ignore the crusades, the inquizition, the Aztecs, and the tens of millions killed for not having the "intellect" to accept their version of religion.
The same holds true for all religions - look at the wacky islamic fundamentalists eager to kill all the "infidels."
We'll ignore the horrific abuse of women condoned by religious groups. After all, women are mere chattel, property of their husbands. With the blessing of the gods, why not rape and hurt women?
SE7EN - No one treats you any differently b/c you have faith. You have the right to believe whatever you want. Hey, some people still worship idols - more power to them!
You claim that you don't personaly prosthelitize. That may be true on an individual basis, but the religious ALWAYS try to impose their religious views on believers and non-believers alike.
Intellectuals and others who don't believe in gods don't challenge your right to believe, but rather are incensed by the way religious groups medddle in affairs that are not their concern. Abortion is a perfect example.
If the barbaric religions that still oppress women are opposed to abortion (and the women socialized to accept their mistreatment) let them not get abortions.
It's disgusting, unethical and barbaric to demand that everyone follow the interpreted edicts of whatever invisible man or men in the sky you worship. You want to go ahead and pursue it, it's your business. Keep out of everyone else's.

Now you make it seem as if I'm crying over here. Boo hoo, the big mean atheist is persecuting me. That's not it at all. It's the same as if I came up to you and started criticizing you because of your atheist beliefs. It's not so much persecution as it is an annoyance. It's like, "Here we go, this again."
I guesss Christians are tollerant of all religious beliefs. We'll ignore the crusades, the inquizition, the Aztecs, and the tens of millions killed for not having the "intellect" to accept their version of religion.
Yes, because all religious individuals are zealots, aren't they. What, do you want me to apologize for the crimes of those before me? I can't do that.
I'd make some sort of grand argument here about the true nature of zealotry, and tie it in with a sociological argument about how religion has become nothing more than an institution created to establish power, but it's late in the evening, and I'd probably just screw it up anyway.
That may be true on an individual basis, but the religious ALWAYS try to impose their religious views on believers and non-believers alike.
How can you say that, when you don't know me? If you knew me in RL, which is to say in person, outside of this message board, probably the only reason you would know that I am a believer in God would be if I told you. When I say I don't press my beliefs on others, I really do mean that.
Intellectuals and others who don't believe in gods don't challenge your right to believe,
No, they may just insult it. And I'm NOT sitting here saying that Christians or Muslims or any faith is not-guilt of persecuting others. I'm just saying, there are times when EVERYONE may insult the beliefs (or non-beliefs) of another.
but rather are incensed by the way religious groups medddle in affairs that are not their concern.
Define what areas are not of their concern? And what negates these areas from concerning them? Simply because they believe in something other than themselves? If so, that's disqualifying millions of people in this country alone, and billions worldwide.
Abortion is a perfect example.
Now, this is an example of where you would have to know me personally. Because I believe in God, AND I believe in abortion. It's not my most favorite thing in the world, I will admit, but I support a woman's right to choose. Or does my opinion not matter anyway because I believe in God? Furthermore, why should a person of a religious faith not be allowed to have an opinion on the matter? Surely there are people out there who disapprove or don't believe in abortion who are atheists. Are THEIR opions heard, over those of the religious, simply because the God factor isn't there?
It's disgusting, unethical and barbaric to demand that everyone follow the interpreted edicts of whatever invisible man or men in the sky you worship. You want to go ahead and pursue it, it's your business. Keep out of everyone else's.
I'm not debating that. I mean, wasn't that sort of my point earlier? I am NOT sticking my nose into anyone else's business. I just happen to believe in a god. I'm not forcing YOU to believe in it. I'm not making YOU believe what I believe, anymore than you are doing the same to me. Or do you think it is absolutely impossible for me to simply believe in a God and not try to turn you into one some sort of religious Borg?
If there is an attempt to assimilate you, it won't be by me.
And now, since I've resorted to Star Trek references, I can see it's time for me to shut my mouth and go to bed for the evening.

I'm sure he's not calling or equating the mythical figure of christ with hitler.
Rather, instead he probably refers to the actions of Pope "Pius" XII during Hitler's reign.
"That indictment is made explicit in the title Cornwell has given his book: Hitler's Pope. His criticism, rooted in a painstaking examination of Pacelli's record as the Vatican's point man in dealing with the rise of Hitler in the 1930s and of his maneuvering as Pius XII during the war years, is a devastating refutation of the claim that this Pope's diplomacy can in any way be characterized as wisdom. Instead of a portrait of a man worthy of sainthood, Cornwell lays out the story of a narcissistic, power-hungry manipulator who was prepared to lie, to appease, and to collaborate in order to accomplish his ecclesiastical purpose -- which was not to save lives or even to protect the Catholic Church but, more narrowly, to protect and advance the power of the papacy. Pacelli's personal history, his character, and his obsession with Vatican prerogatives combined at the crucial hour to make him "the ideal Pope for Hitler's unspeakable plan," Cornwell writes. "He was Hitler's pawn. He was Hitler's Pope."

What about "Hallowed"?
Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name etc...
If you believe that the Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Ghost) is three-in-one, then we would be praying to God, which could also be Jesus or the ghost. Hence, Jesus H. (Hallowed) Christ, esq.
p.s. Hallowed means Holy or Consecrated
