There was an article in the paper today saying how James Gandolfini can't wait to be done with the character of Tony. Do you guys think any of this cast will have a big hit after this show is off the air? I'm not talking about a bit part in another mobster movie or show, I mean a hit. Something more memorable than Drea de Mateo in Joey.

They all will...because they're mob guys!!!
Of all the cast, I think Edie Falco might have the best post-show success. More "critical" hits than commercial hits, but I think she has the best shot. Though I can see Gandolfini going away for awhile then coming out with something amazing.

Most of those guys were typecast as mobsters before the Sopranos even started. Edie Falco was already on Broadway during the hiatus 2 years ago (with the guy who plays Artie Bucco), so they may return to the theatre.
Gandolfini has had a bunch of roles over the last 7 years. I'm sure his career will be fine.

I don't mean will he act again I mean will he be successful at it. He has had roles in the last 7 years but none of them has had a sniff at being successful or memoriable.

I think Vito will have a huge hit with his "Queer Eye for the Made Man" show.

It will be easier for the cast members of the show to find work than it is/was for the stars of Cheers! or Seinfeld and that ilk. TV comedy typecasts are hard to break (just ask Tom Hanks).
On a side note...
I've been debating for months if HBO is worth the price. I plan on cancelling on Monday. It's not related exclusively to the Sopranos ending, but I don't watch most of the original programing and the movie selection usually sucks.

I'm most interested in seeing what David Chase does. The Sopranos was such an amazing show, it will be interesting to see what he goes for next.

I did a quick IMDB search and found a couple interesting things:
Gandolfini is set to play Ernest Hemingway in a bio film in 2008.
Edie Falco is currently filming another Indie Film.
Jamie-Lynn Sigler has 2 films in the works - one with Freddie Prinze jr and another film which credits Whoopi among the cast.
The rest seem like they must be 'laying low.'

its really not even the typecast thing that will hold these actors back. do any of you realize how difficult it is to be cast in a successful t.v. show once in your life, let alone twice? its near impossible. its just strict odds against all of them ever being able to reclaim the success they are having with this show.

I'll say that within 2-3 years all the characters will go back to something similar to the careers they had before the show. Gandolfini will be back to doing small roles, if working at all. Edie will remain on Broadway, where she's been for years. Little Stevie will be doing his radio show and playing with Bruce on his next tour (if there is one). And the rest of the cast will slip back into doing the occasional Mob and Italian stereotype roles in B movies.
I think shows like this are such a rare combination of good writing, the right actors and the right timing that its pretty hard to duplicate. Plus now its been done, so people will be looking for something else. If these actors go back to these roles it will seem hack and typecast. You cant repaint the Mona Lisa.

That movie was pretty bad, but he was good in it. The Mexican is another shitty movie that he was fucking fantastic in.
I think one thing that'll help him get more roles is when he gets back down to his normal weight. He's had to always pack on the pounds to play Tony, so once he gets back to a smaller size, I think it'll help seperate him from Tony Soprano.

HBO is worthless for anything besides certain original programming these days. Cancel now and sign back up this fall for The Wire.

unfortunately for gandolfini he will be forever tony soprano no matter what role he takes imo
he is just too ... tony
remember in that movie "the mexican" where he played the gay hit man, all i could think about the whole time i watched was that tony would never take in the ace, ever
also, that movie about the prison with robert redford where he played the asshole military warden, he was supposed to be kinda timid and shit and it just didn't work for me
it's too bad because he is so good, and i hope i am wrong, but i think he is screwed for major acting work, he might get over in theater but only time will tell

Everyone will always look at Gandofini as Tony Soprano... Just like Ed O'Neill always will be Al Bundy... Al Bundy was the bad coach in Little Giants... Al Bundy was Prefontaine's Coach.....

The thing about Gandolfini is that he's at his best when quiet and subtle. Movies like Last Castle and the terrible All the King's Men remake he kind of has to be in the "shell" of Tony Soprano without any of the complexity that made Tony so fascinating to watch. It's like they think that just by casting him as a big, intimidating guy they'll have the Tony Soprano magic. But that's not why Tony Soprano worked. That's why I think a) he'll need to disappear for awhile and b) come back with a true character piece. If he keeps trying movies where he's in a Tony-esque role, he'll continue with flops.
He was great in True Romance though.

Tony Sirico and Steve Schirrippa both were on with Mike Francesa this week and both referenced sitcoms they have in the works. I can't see either of these working on any level.
