the super regionals are ending shortly, and i am up now watching the fullerton ucla game which has been a really well pitched, well played game, but doesn't compare to the uc-irvine/wichita state from earlier today.
i know michigan/oregon state, and north carolina/ south carolina have played some good games as well.
i am really looking forward to watching as much of this as i can hopefully espn puts the games on.
anyway this is a place to discuss

UC Irvine came thisclose to getting screwed yesterday in the Wichita State game...the umpire called the guy for WSU out at first base, then the decision was reversed after an argument, which ive never seen before (and I also thought judgment calls weren't supposed to be reversed), and WSU ended up tying the game, but Irvine won in extras
I love the CWS...its really a fun thing

Aren't they trying to outlaw aluminum (I use the British accent here and pronounce it "a-loo-MIN-eee-um") bats in college, or is it just high school?

I never thought I'd put this in print but here goes...all the good wood goes to MLB. The colleges couldn't afford to play if they had to spend that kind of money on bats.

Not true...they were saying on the OSU/Michigan broadcast that the costs are about the same
The color commentator was making the point that baseball has to fight with a LOT of other things for attention at colleges, so its one way of making the game exciting so people will come out...and aluminum bats do make for big offense

I don't buy that commentator's take. I'm not going to go out to a college baseball game just because I might see Marshall McDougall hit 6 home runs against the Terps.

Our baseball program really does stink...and I have no idea why...we have two of the best high school baseball programs in the country here (Dematha and Riverdale Baptist)
I can only think really of two or three Terps that made it in baseball...Eric Milton, Steve Schmoll (who I think still pitches for the Dodgers), Brett Cecil (who just got drafted by the Blue Jays) and Justin Maxwell (he's in the Nats system now..I had a class with his girlfriend at MD....a real sweetheart...except about as smart as the bottom of my shoe)

I played and coach college baseball.....and the argument about wood vs metal is something we have spoken about many times. I think at the college level if they decided to change to playing with wood it wouldnt be a bad idea. What gets me is these towns trying to change little league to play with wood because a few kids in 5 years dies or almost dies from being hit by a ball while on the pitchers mound. PLEASE do not get me wrong I am not condoning a child being seriously injured here, what I am saying is parents are over reacting. The difference between a ball hit off a wood bat and a ball hit off a metal bat is
.06 sec vs .04 sec respectively (those are not actual times, just an example). So either way a pitcher has very little time to react. Plus what happens if a wood bat breaks and then the splinters hit the pitcher in the neck and then parents are going to say oh wood is bad. So what I am saying is that wood in college is not a bad idea, not great either, but anything lower than that use alluminum!!!

There's no way the cost of wood could be the same as aluminum.
How many wooden bats do they go through in an average major league game ?
You think a non-major conference school could afford as many as a major conference ?
Not a chance.
Who cares if they use aluminum ? It's not like one team does and the other doesn't.
It's an even field.
Sure it made some scores crazy in the pat but they've made many changes in the last few years to keep the HRs down.
They had a stat last night that there hasn't been a grand slam hit in something like 208 at bats. Last one hit was back in maybe 2002.
I kinda like this field of teams because you have a few non-traditional schools ( UC-Irvine and Louisville ) and for the most part theu earned their way in.
Recently you've had a lot of Regionals where it was set-up so that certain schools had an easier path which I don't think was right.
Actually this year they kinda screwed the West teams whereas they usually screw the southern teams.
There's no way anybody west of Texas can play each other in the championship round.
That may or may not be a good thing.

Aluminum bats are for queers...
Makes sense..

metal bats are kind of annoying, but look at the college league in the summers where pitchers dominate like crazy. it is really hard to hit with wood and financial reasons aside i think they should keep the death bats.

I heard an interview with Ron Polk, Miss St head coach, and he was saying that college baseball is the 2nd most profitable NCAA sport behind football.
Now I didn't catch all of the details and I'm not sure how it makes more than basketabll with the tournament being so closely followed but apparently it is.
It may have something to do with the costs to the school to run the programs.
They pointed to the fact that baseball is only allowed 11.7 scholarships and that various other sports, by no means nation, have more.
Equestrian one was sport that was allowed more than that.

Baseball is pretty low on the athletic budget scale at most colleges....like REALLY low (most schools don't even give out full scholarships....most of the players, if not all of them, are on partials). Look at UC Irvine....they stopped the program in 92 because they didn't have the budget to run it any more, then the students agreed to take on some extra fees in 1999 so they could bring it back.
Plus, with hypocrisy and outrages brought on by Title IX, a lot of men's non-revenue programs like baseball and wrestling are the first to go

I know a few years ago that UVA was going to have to kill baseball due to gender equity.
Not sure if they've since brought it back but as far as I can recall they were the only major conference school to have a baseball team go under.

providence lost its baseball program. it was traditionally pretty strong in the big east

I was talking more traditional college baseball powerhouse conferences like the SEC, Big 12, PAC10, ACC and Big West.
Most of the time your champion is coming from one of those.

UVA's program is still there....we got a pretty good player from there in 2005

that's true, i was basing it off of "major conference" and the big east usually has a couple teams ranked during the year.

My team, LSU, has been on the skids the last few years but I refuse to be a fair weather fan.
We've been spoiled and now pairity is starting to take it's toll.
They'll get it back on track. Hopefully hiring the old ND coach turns out to be a good choice.

One of the best games I saw years ago, 1991, was Wichita State & Creighton.
Wichita St was the heavy favorite not just in the game but for the whole CWS.
They were like 1-1 until the 12th I think before Wichita St won.
Remember that was back in the days when all the runs were being scored.
I dont remember if any of the players on Creighton's team made the pros.
Wichita St had Tyler Greene, 2 Dreiforts and at least 1 or 2 other pros.
