Well I don't know if it's mumbling, as much as a slang / softspoken / accent / dumb combination. There's this guy at work, and everything he says I have to ask him "what?" 2-5 times before I understand him. Sometimes I just shake my head , yes, but I can tell that he's waiting for a non yes / no answer from me. I know it's his problem, but sometimes the conversations make me feel like the asshole for asking him to repeat himself 5 times.

I have the same problem with a lot of people. I usually tell them that I am hard of hearing even though I could hear a mouse fart in the corner of a barn.

I know this guy that mumbles on purpose, because he likes the attention. If I can't hear him, I move on.
I also know somebody that, no matter what you say to him, he always responds with "What?", but if you wait a beat, he'll just start answering your question.
Fucking retards.

one of may managers is exactly like this. As speaking under his breath, I finally told him to speak up or I would continue to stare at him like he is stupid. He has been doing much better the last few months.

I remember dealing with this mumbler one time. I couldn't hear what she was saying so I just shook my head in agreement and smiled. Next thing I know I'm wearing a puffy shirt on the Today Show.

by the end of the day im a mumbler
There's a guy at work that talks at a whisper, like he's trying to seduce you. Add to the fact that he doesn't speak English all that well, and it's impossible to understand him. I always tell him to speak like he's got a set of balls.
Oh yeah, he's one of the order takers answering phone calls from customers.

i'm always paranoid about being overheard so i tend to speak very softly. even when i make a very conscious effort to speak up i know i am still often not loud enough.

i could never hear my friend, kelly, when she called me on the phone. one day i noticed she holds the receiver under her chin instead of talking into the receiver. drives me nuts. thanks for letting me share.

There is this effeminate guy I work with who will talk to you and if you respond, he will say "Whats that..?" Like he couldnt understand you. I think he is mesmerized and not truly listening to anything you say because he is staring at your mouth.
