View Full Version : How long are you willing to push an expiration date?

I heard Fez talking recently about a Retard Island store that carries expired merchandise. Today I was at my father-in-law's house and when we sat down for coffee and dessert I noticed that the milk was expired. The Expiration Date read: "NY June 9 and NJ June 14" (I'm not really sure how the same carton of milk won't expire for another five days depending on what state you're in).
Anyway I couldn't bring myself to use it and I wouldn't allow my kids to have it, much to my father-in-law's consternation. This isn't the first time we've come across expired food at my in-laws'. Past examples include butter, jelly, soda and even bottled water. My father-in-law thinks my wife and I are crazy for our strict observance of expiration dates. But in this case I think milk is something you don't want to take a chance with.
That being said however, I know that I have a big bottle of salad dressing in my refridgerator which expired in April which I don't have any trouble using. So, I guess I do have a selective observation of Expiration Dates.
What's your opinion? We'd like to know.

really depends on what it is. milk, though, isn't even an issue. once it's past the date, it goes out, no matter what. any dairy product, for that matter.

totally agree on strict observance of milk expiration dates. actually, i'll normally get rid of it a few days beforehand.

It really depends. Most things it isn't a big deal, but I won't use milk for most uses (like cereal or a glass of milk) on the day of the expiration date. My wife thinks I'm crazy.
However, we did just use a thing of milk for a week past the date, but only in coffee.

it's not the thickness, it's the length....wait...maybe it's the width, not the length. it's not the size of the ship it's how you float the boat...no, you're right, it is the thickness.

The date on milk is generally a "sell by" date not a "use by" date. So it's just the date that the store can still sell it by. So for me if it's past that date, I just give it a whiff and if it still smells good, I see no reason not to drink it. Other things I'm not so easy on, but with milk it's easy to tell if it's still good or not by how it smells. No use in letting good dairy go to waste.

maybe i'm extra sensitive, but i can smell it start to turn before the expiry. that's why i'll normally toss it before the expiration date. also, if they can't legally sell it because it's getting dicey with the date, i want zero part of it.

i like to stick my finger in first and then give it a good wiff...
anyway
smell it first, if it seems alright try it in coffee and make sure it doesn't curdle

With milk, I'll abide by the printed date. Maybe 1-2 days extra if it still smells fine and I need it for coffee.
With painkillers...I'll let you know when I see an expiration date that bothers me.

That ny date is usually for NYC and the fact that many delis and bodegas get their merchandise from wholesale places and it they pick it up themselvews in Vans. That ride back to the deli non-refrigerated shortens the shelf life. Also many peopel in NYC walk. longer trip home unrefrigerated

They did a report on Dateline or the like about how stores were repackaging meat that was paste date. Just reprinting a lable and slapping it on steaks and ground beef to keep the shelf life.
Iv'e noticed the shorter date on NY milk too
Milk is the sniff test. At the office the milk stays in the refrige for a few extra days and does not suffer. If it curdles in my coffe I drink black that day

depends. in a Can I will eat it a year after the date.
Milk pouring it out the day of expiration.
I use the dates as a guideline, although most dates are "sell-by" not "use-by." For dairy/meat products, you can tell simply by smelling them. Some people are overly paranoid though.
And for stuff that's high in salt content (frozen/canned food, snack food) or sugar content (cookies, candy, jelly/jam), it's safe to eat well beyond the expiration date. The actual quality of the food might be pretty poor though.

I was digging a grave for Brillo in our pet sematary at "the ranch", a one-hundred acre parcel of isolated, Red Dawn escape land that my parents own. I didn't bring any lunch because usually digging a grave and burying a beloved pet isn't conducive to hunger, but I got hungry. In the cabin, I found a 12-year-old can of black olives. I ate 12-year-old olives for lunch. The whole can. They tasted exactly the same as a brand new can.

I always will eat expired hostess cakes or use like a day old bread if theres no mold. Milk and yogurt I make an effort to use before they expire. I always wonder about beef or chicken. If it says sell by the 18th how many days after is it good to use.Two or more days in the refridgerator past the date without cooking it I feel like its gonna be a risky meal once I use it.

I,ll tell jokes even if they expired years ago. did you hear the one about the spanish farm girl and the conquistador...
I won't even push it to the expiration date. That goes for diet soda and bottled water as well as milk and other foods that spoil. It gets dumped the day before if not sooner.

I saw a study on the expiration dates for over the counter meds and most studies say that the meds are just as good after the expiration date as before. The pharmacutical industry puts the date on the package to get you to throw out perfectly good meds so that you can buy some new ones.

i felt the same way with Sam Adams. I believe at one time they were the only beer with an expiration date. I said to myself "this is one way to make more sales unnecessarily" Then Budeweiser followed suit with the 'born on' date some time later

Yeah, if it expires on the 22nd and it's the 21st it's in the trash. As for my diet soda, if their's a little more than a glass left it's dumped in the sink.
