View Full Version : I Need Older Music

I'm piggy backing on F_S's thread here. I lived a pretty sheltered life growing up. My mother didn't like much, so I wasn't really exposed to much more than the run of the mill crap all my life. Shitty dinners, shitty music, shitty clothes. For instance, any old movies, I've probably never seen or just recently seen. I've never seen any of the original Star Wars, I hadn't seen Scarface or the Godfather movies until the last two years. I've never had sushi. I had cheesecake for the first time a week ago. I listened to Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band for the first time a year ago. I recently started listening to Black Sabbath (I'm really pissed I missed that growing up - that would have been perfect music for my dumb, angsty youth).

I've slowly tried catching up on pre-1985 movies and music. Anytime Ronnie B mentions something, I go find it. But I need some recommendations for older music. I've heard all The Beatles stuff. I got Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys, but I wasn't impressed at all. And I think Bruce Springsteen is incredibly overrated. I listened to the first 8 albums of Black Sabbath and didn't skip ahead once; thought they were fantastic. I've, obviously, heard Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and really enjoy their stuff. But other than that, I'm pretty much in the dark on "older" music. I care more about albums than just tracks, and I was really trying to find a Rolling Stone "album", but they just seem to be way more song driven than anything. Oh, and I forgot, I like Van Morrison.

So, what can people recommend for me? What is necessary for me to "catch up", so to speak?

This was my first record I ever got. It was given to me by my dad. I later blamed the song Eight Miles High when I was a teenager and my folks found a huge bag of shrooms in my car.
I still love early psychadelic Byrds...later on they turned more country-esque

I've always hated Punk Music, but I think its because the only stuff I've been exposed to is terrible pop-punk like Green Day and Blink-182. There's a Stooges song on Guitar Hero II and I like that one, so I'll have to check more out.

You won't like it at first. Or even second. It's an album that grows on you after several listens.

I care more about albums than just tracks, and I was really trying to find a Rolling Stone "album", but they just seem to be way more song driven than anything.

Get any Stones album from 1968-1972 and then skip the tracks they play to death on the radio. The first one I'd get is "Exile on Main Street". I'd also recommend "Aftermath" from 1966.

A fun thing to do with Led Zeppelin is to start working backwards, then branch out again. I did this when I was younger.
i played Zep to death. Then I picked up the Yardbirds Albums. The Yardbirds spawned Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy page. Then you follow those avenues for a while.

Once again, go back to the Yardbirds, and dig up all the old American Blues that they covered, and begin another journey.
Lot's of fun, and a real education.
good luck.

I'm with you Mike. If you really want to look at 20th century music, you should probably start with Louie Armstrong, work your way through the Jazz/Big Band/Bebop ages. Then check out the "Jump Blues" black artists of the 40's who were the precursors to Rock and Roll (great, fun stuff) THEN get to the Rock and Roll of the 50's and 60's. After that you can throw in what is now considered "Classic Rock" of the 70's and 80's.

Then you can put it all in some kind of context.

BTW-Was "Blake" Art Blakey? Love the Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan years.

I know everyone is giving you studio albums but here are a couple of "Best Of" albums you should check out:

Rolling Stones: Hot Rocks 64-71 - I got this in the 9th grade and instantly turned me into a stones fan. Once you get into this then buy all of the stones albums mentioned earlier.

The Who - Meaty, Beaty, Big, and Bouncy.- Then buy Who's Next (extended version), Tommy (studio version), Quadraphenia.

Ramones - Mania - Then get Ramones, Rockets to Russia, and all of the rest.

U2 - Best of 1980 -1990 (get extended version with B-sides) - then get Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, Live under a blood red sky, and then buy the rest of the early stuff.

Beatles, Get the Red and Blue best of albums and then buy Sgt Peppers, The White Album, and then see what period you like the best or like me buy them all.

That should be a good start.
I know you are getting the hits and like many of us we get tired of the hits they play on the radio all of the time. Buying these "best of" albums are a good way to hear a broad range of these bands without buying the whole catalog first.

I got The Doors' The Doors.

It's quickly becoming apparent that I know just about every song off this album. I listened to a classic rock station a lot in my late teen years (along with the "oldies" station my father always listened to) and I never realized just how many Doors songs they played.

Or how much I love The Doors. I don't think I've ever heard a Doors song that I disliked. And I got extremely happy when I say The End was on this album. I love that song. I remember it being on a mix tape I had and I'd be all teen-aged depressed and/or angsty listening to it. Hopefully it fits right into my late-twenties real life depression.

Thumbs up to The Doors' The Doors. We're batting 1.000 so far. 1/1.

I need to edit this post for this reason : I'm really upset that I never had this album. This is fantastic. Just a GREAT album.

Album is called Yeti. Thick, heavy krautrock. Jawohl!

Sludgy and hard, rock trio massacre.

Weird, spacey psychedelic duo who put electronics to good use early on. Their second album, Contact, is also quite good.

Sci Fi infused heavy proto metal/pseudo prog weirdness featuring a pre-Motorhead Lemmy.

After a couple of listens : eh. I actually turned it off the first way through. Sympathy for the Devil is a song I knew and I like, but the next few songs just sort of dragged. Once the album hits Jig-Saw Puzzle (which I think is my new favorite Stones song), it picks up a bit.

But like any other Rolling Stones album I've listened to, there's no real flow to the album. It just sounds like a bunch of songs put together on a cd. I'll give it a few more listens, but right now, its just another Stones album to me.

Lot's of fun, and a real education.
good luck.

I did the same thing when the first ASIA album came out in '82 (great one BTW!)
I got into the bands the members came from (YES, Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, and to a lesser extent, King Crimson) From there I started listening to "prog-rock" bands alot (still do to this day)
Here are my suggestions.......

YES - The Yes Album, Close To The Edge, Drama (VERY underrated!)
E.L.P. - Tarkus, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery
King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
GENESIS - Selling England By The Pound, Wind & Wuthering, Duke
RUSH - Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Power Windows
Frank Zappa - Apostrophe', Overnite Sensation
Supertramp - Crime Of The Century, Even In The Quietest Moments

I'm into WAY more than just this, but I figured I'd stick to the "prog" stuff for now.

I've listened to Stop Making Sense several times now. I guess I never realized how much I like the Talking Heads. I know quite a few songs off this album, and I don't think I've ever heard a Talking Heads song that I disliked. And I guess this album is from a movie, and seems like a best-of of the Talking Heads, so it was the perfect album. So this is another album going into my normal shuffle mode.

But I have to thank weekapaugjz again. I cannot stop listening to The Doors. I feel like a kid from the south that just saw snow for the first time and just keeps skiing.

You folks really like every music style from A to B.

It's 'I need older music' not 'This isnt old, but at least it sold a billion copies...'

Wow that was harsh.

:scrolling up and down, seeing albums that are so obvious... yep...:

Cmon peeps; theres more then rock and roll and it's extended family of genres.

Preach on Mike. Preach on as these "greatest hits" recommendations are killing my soul...

Looks like I'll be the first to go international here. (England doesn't count)

Great summer album. The album that started the Bossa Nova craze of the early 60's and still sounds every bit as good today. Most of its songs are considered to be standards in both the US and Brazil. If you want to open yourself up to a whole world of Brazilian music, here's where to start.

Bingo. Look at who influenced the bands you listen to now and you'll find yourself going all the way back to some of the early Blues artists. 50's Rock and roll came out the "Jump Blues" of the 40's, most people will know Big Joe Turners "Shake Rattle and Roll" and maybe Big Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog". Two others greats from that era are Wynonie Harris and Louis Jordan. Then you start to realize that Jazz and Blues were very similar in their early stages and you start listening to Louie Armstrong and Count Basie's first band with Jimmy Rushing. Now you start going down the Jazz road. . . . on and on and on.
