im really excited about this. i have an interview for a teaching position at a charter school in buffalo tomorrow morning at 11:30. it will be for teaching 12th grade economics and U.S. government. i did part of my student teaching in economics and absolutely loved it and would love to get a job teaching it. i have to "teach" a lesson to the panel of two social studies teachers, the recruitment officer, and high school principal. im just putting the finishing touches on the lesson i created and printing out a bunch of my old lesson plans for a portfolio to show.

so, if you remember tomorrow morning at 11:30, keep your fingers crossed for me, cause i would love to get this job.

i work with children, but only to a certain age. i like being able to scare them into submission. once they get to a certain age, you can no longer bluff them as convincingly. i commend you for wanting to teach high school. they're heathens, if you ask me, but i wish you luck.

A little advice, in your practice lesson don't refer to the government as "The Man".

And good luck.

ha! actually, i have to teach a lesson on world history. the woman who called me about the interview didn't say what the opening was but i have a friend who works at the school and said it was for economics/gov't because no one in the school right now wants to teach it.

the job i work at now i deal with kids k-3. i have a good time with it but i only deal with 8-12 of them at a time. i can't imagine trying to teach an entire class of the snot nosed little kids without losing my f'ing mind.

Weeka, I can't tell you how excited I am to hear about this. It's so inspiring to hear the passion and love you have for your career choice. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you buddy and wishing you the best as you deserve it! Whatever happens, your future students will be lucky to have you as their teacher. Teaching is such an admirable profession but I'm truly excited for you because your heart is sincerely in it which is more then can be said for many. You will be doing what you want to do in life. I hope it only gets better for you, you're awesome!

I worked with young children as well and there are days you do loose your mind but in the end it really is rewarding, cliche but true. It's not for everyone though and I'm glad weeka has good sense enough to realize this as I've seen to many elementary ed. teachers become burnt out much to early and soon they are literally hating the kids they are suppose to be helping.

12th graders aren't too young, and the subject matter sounds like the kind of stuff that would attract good students who want to learn.

Good luck Weeky! I'D love to take that class! Sounds fascinating!

my whole thing in teaching economics was to try to relate the material to the student's everyday lives. instead of standing up there lecturing about how the supply and demand curves shift blah blah blah, i came up with lessons which showed the concepts and how they can see it in everyday activities. economics can really be pretty cool if done the right way. ill leave the boring shit to their college professors.

just remember while you're interviewing to focus on the little things ... like if you put on enough deodorant, or if you ate too much for breakfast, or if youre going to get a boner, or how many times in 10 seconds you take a breath.

all joking aside, good job scoring the interview and good luck. i could give you advice but then I remembered youre the teacher and not me. im sure you know what to do

and if by the slight chance the 23 year old chick who showed some cleavage got the job over you... fuck them you didnt need them anyway

 i got the reference, but with high school economics, they don't really get too heavy with the graphs, i think i tried to show maybe 3 or 4 graphs with shifting supply and demand and the students were completely lost on it. i just stuck with the major concepts and tried to keep it interesting and not too technical.

Take a big ol' pull off of some speed 20 minutes before your interview....

Goodluck man,

All I can say is you are about to start a deadly cycle.

Once you get a job people expect you to work, if you quit or get fired you are a loser... If you take too long to get a job you are a lazy bum...

But, if you just never worked nothing is expected of you. You will always be 'that guy who doesn't work'.

Think about it man, what's worse? being the lazy bum loser or the guy who doesn't work?

When they offer you the position I wan't you to consider this before you accept...

There's no going back!

I haven't heard about the second book, but the authors do a column in the NYT Sunday Magazine. I don't know how frequently, but fairly often.

And, good luck with the job Mr. Hand.

(alright, I just googled mr hand, looking for an image and got this: Kinda NSFW (http://www.airdeparis.com/olaf/2004/mr.hand.jpg), and it ain't Ray Walston)

Glad to hear the interview went well, Week. I hope you get the job, and the course sounds really interesting. I never took Econ in college but have been reading up on it a lot in relation to history/politics lately. I think Econ needs to be taught as a separate unit from an early age. Leads to very productive and decisive citizens, sad that it is neglected by the overall curriculum of the majority of secondary and post-secondary institutions alike.

I am in a similar situation - interview with a Charter in Newark teaching Lit to 7-8 grade, a sort of dream job except for the commute. Great population of kids who are there because their parents want them to be there, to learn, and succeed. What more can you ask for in students? My lesson plan is causing massive anxiety since I've never taught before, I am visiting every teaching site on the web I can find and re-reading the canon of adolescent lit obsessively so I can formulate something decent enough to present at the interview...

It's amazing how much work you will put into preparing for an interview when you really, REALLY care about your job. Up until now, work has been nothing but a paycheck. I am on fire with the obession of becoming a teacher and I am willing to sacrifice much to get there. I never thought I would see the day...
