PC sucks. as our society advances we are becoming narrowed minded. As we become acceptable to other cultures we become less tolerant. Why can't people make fun of different things or things that they might not understand or that are different. I am sure someone here will make argument on how the P.C times we live in are better but I for one do not see it.
great find Reilly.

I grew up watching this stuff. it was entertainment. my mom and my grandmother didnt think for one second that this would be harmful for me to watch. Hell, they were the ones who would sit and watch it with me.

same here. I know my sister lets my older nephew watch stuff that his friends cannot. She tries to raise her kids with an understanding that some of the shows they watch are just shows and not real. The way people act in them shouldn't affect the way you act.

Wait, what does this have to do with "post-Imus" or "modern PC?" I don't understand how anyone who isn't Gvac-old or more "grew up" with these specific cartoons since they haven't been in syndication for decades or realeased for video or DVD. The decision to not show many of the overly racial/racist classic cartoon shorts has been around since the 60's.
Everyone talks like cartoons have gotten more tame since the days of the classic shorts, but I think it's the exact opposite, be they cartoons for kids or adults. I think they've gotten smarter and more subversive.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying these cartoons should be banned...on the contrary, I think it's absurd that many of them aren't released onto DVD unedited, if at all. I do understand now showing ones like "Bigs Bunny Nips the Nips" on TV, but to pretend like they totally don't exist is absurd. There is a middle ground.
My favorte of the "banned" classic shorts is "Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarves":
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hm4t2klB2s0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hm4t2klB2s0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous with a lot of the racial stuff, but at the same time, it's a damn good cartoon. The animation is fantastic and the music, as per usual with Warner Bros., is outstanding. The writers and animators worked with a bunch of famous black entertainers at the time to make this one, something most of the major studios wouldn't even dream of doing. Yes, there are a lot of cheap shots, but at the same time, there is an obvious appreciation of "black culture" going on at the same time. It really represents a lot in terms of the time it was made and how racial relations in this country were changing then and are still evolving now.
I grew up on Tom and Jerry cartoons that clearly had "Mammy" characters that have since been redubbed.
But along with what Mojo said, there was some appreciation of black culture. One of my favorite ones "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby":

And just for fun "Uncle Pecos", I love the guitar jam at 5:00.

The thing is that childrens cartoons are more adult oriented but they suck. these cartoons that are posted always had a history behind them. My grandmother used to tell me that these were great to watch during and after the war because it gave them a sense of relief and that humor was the best medicine to console the pain of the reality that went on. People had thicker skin back then.
I blame our generation.
do you think that Warner Brothers or Disney would even create this for the today's generations that pertain to the war that is going on right now? Can you actually see Disney making fun al-Qaida? If there is one, i have no knowledge of it.
I actually had a course in college (History of Animated Film) and we spent a week on this topic.
Most of the material that everyone is pulling is from the early days of Warner Brothers, when they had a dream creative staff including Chuck Jones, Tex Avery, Virgil Ross....but most importantly the wild & rebellous Robert Clamplett.
During World War II the studios gave everyone free reign to produce "pro-America" cartoons as a part of the effort. So everyone did plenty of cartoons shitting on Hitler & the Japanese. The stereotypes are really awful (especially the Asian ones), but in the context of the times they make perfect sense.
I share the love of Clampett's "Coal Black" with Mojo as it is a brilliant short by Clampett. He does an amazing pro-war, social commentary....all while shitting on Disney.
As for modern animation, I couldn't disagree more with the sentiment that this type of commentary doesn't exist anymore. Shit, you can see the path this stuff blazed everytime you watch South Park. Fuck, how many times has Cartman been Hitler while being funny, relevant and totally offensive.

Actually, they were rerunning these into the late 80's, and some have made their way to video/DVD, and I'm sure more will.

cartman hitler = hysterical!!! there is no doubt that this type of stuff still remains on television, but the question is how many parents actually encourage their children to watch it? not many. I for one will sit with my nieces, nephews, cousins and watch it. its funny. its humor. its making fun of what is reality today. its just sad that a lot of parents are shadowing their children from it.

I don't necessarily think Disney or Warner Brothers need to do that type of material these days. The structure of those corporations is so different now than it was then....plus honestly their major characters aren't as relevant as they were then. If Daffy Duck & Mickey Mouse went after bin Laden would it really matter?
Now today's generation does have that avenue as South Park went after bin Laden in November of 2001, with the episode "Bin Laden has Farty Pants", with a number of other shots along the way. I know that Family Guy has also made fun of Bin Laden. I would think we are covered with animation on this front.

that would be awesome. but it wouldnt happen. think we can pitch it to disney?

I don't think they'd let us in the door as they protect those "brands" way too much. That's ok....we should pitch an idea to the boys from Williams Street for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force anyways...they'd be more fun.

But again, it's the context. Those cartoons were made when everyone when to the theaters instead of watching TV. They were designed as shorts to be shown between blocks of other films and news reports. Why would anyone be making those today?
I blame our generation.
For what? The same generation that made The Simpsons, South Park, Futurama and all the Adult Swim cartoons? I'm sorry, I just don't see the cartoons since then being less "risque" or less funny.
do you think that Warner Brothers or Disney would even create this for the today's generations that pertain to the war that is going on right now? Can you actually see Disney making fun al-Qaida? If there is one, i have no knowledge of it.
They wouldn't make them, for one, because of the reasons I talked about above. The social context doesn't exist to make those cartoons anymore. Secondly, it's always a fallacy to compare something more definitive like WW2 to something as ambiguous as "the war on terror." Even if people wanted to, it's hard to pull off because both conflicts are so different in practice and perception. South Park already showed how ridiculous this is when they did a Looney Tunes-esque take on Osama.
Look, I agree that these cartoons shouln't be forgotten about, but I tend to take issue with the genuine dismissals that we've somehow lost something or gotten worse as a culture because our cartoons have gotten longer, better and funnier and don't have to rely on such clumsy and lazy stereotypes to try and entertain people. Some people see something lost; I see evolution, both socially and entertainment-wise.

For the record, 99% of those old Disney shorts sucked. Warner Bros. and GM shat all over them, humor-wise. If Donald Duck wasn't involved, a "classic" Disney short was my cue to fast-froward or change the channel as a kid.

I completely agree with you about the Disney studio. Mickey Mouse is the single most overrated character ever. That stupid mouse is so goddamn milquetoast.

There's actually a great book called "War Without Mercy" that goes into the uses of racial propaganda during WWII, especially in the Pacific war. One thing you'll notice about a lot of this stuff is that when it goes after Germans, it is careful to go after "Nazis". That is, the German people themselves aren't attacked so much as Hitler and their evil government, towards a theme that we have to save the Germans, who are good people, from the Nazis as much as anyone else.
No such distinction is made when Japan is the subject, however. It's not that evil Emperor Hirohito has imposed this terrible government on the Japanese and we have to save them; the Japanese themselves are the problem. It's the Japanese people we have to defeat, not just the government.
It makes looking at this sort of stuff a lot more interesting when you see it through that prism.
