Actually, San Fran's mayor is banning city departments from buying bottled water saying that it will save taxpayer money and have less than an impact on global warming. What a fucking scam. A city like San Francisco probably wastes more tax payer money on entitlement programs and social experiments. The whole global warming thing is now becoming a gravy train where anyone can come aboard now.

San Francisco banned bottled water for city employees. So what? They had a logic to what they did and they followed through. That is the very essence to local government. They had the same rationale when they banned plastic bags from supermarkets in March (http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2007/03/28/MNGDROT5QN1.DTL).
This is the type of reaction that shows me the mindset of America. The reactionary conservative blurb is to mindless scream "Stupid Liberals" and to make fun of San Fran for actually having social programs.
I was in San Fran when they banned the bags this spring & I can tell you those people were excited about the new rule. Imagine that...local government listening to the pulse of the people and making progressive choices. The people in San Fran knew that what they were doing was a teeny tiny thing in the efforts on protecting the environment, but they were doing their part.
Imagine that, personal responsibility from "Stupid Liberals".

Whoaaaaa San Fran is really responsible when it comes to spending tax dollars. A few years ago they approved to pay for sex change operations for city employees

New York shouldn't brag either. Thats my point. taxes are being wasted across the board, no matter where you live, but since when is SF the beacon of tax reform? I wouldn't be surprised if SF bans the sale of bottled water overall so people would have to get their water from the faucets so that the city can collect more revenue from the water bills

What the mayor doesn't count on apparently is the revenue that Pepsi/Coke/Oland Springs provide the city by allowing their products in these offices.
The probably not only receive a placement fee for each vending machine but also receive rebates back on cases sold.
It's similar to what the schools go through when they pull the sodas out. These comapnies spend a lot of money on programs in schools ( sports, music, theater, etc ... ) but why would/should they continue if there products are being kicked out ?

Thats just ignorant. They arent banning people from buying their own water bottles they are just not paying for it. 2nd do you know how much most water bills are? every quarter (once every 4 months or so) our water bill cost $20. Water from the tap costs something like $2 for every 1000 gallons.

just like I posted above, I dont think they are banning these compnaies from having vending machines, they are no longer ordering water coolers that give out free water. I have no problem with this. I think every govt agency should stop paying for shit so that their employees get free shit. Govt employees already get the best pention plans, retirement packages, contracts, health insurance etc for the rest of their lives and tax payers pay for it. Atleast buy your own f'n water.

My place of business did away the big ol water bottle cooler thing a few years ago and it made some of the skirts mad. They were PISSED but when we pointed out that they were pouring their bottled water over ice made (we have an ice machine) from tap water most of them finally got it and shut the funk up.
I AM OUTRAGED BY SOME OTHER PLACE THAT I DON'T LIVE AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ME DOING SOMETHING I DON'T APPROVE OF. OUTRAGED!!!!!!

Here is a quote from the article Epo linked for us regarding the paper vs. plastic story in San Francisco which:
Proves I care about your opinion Epo
but more importantly
Shows I have an eye for comedy gold.
The lone dissenting voice in the board chamber on Tuesday was Supervisor Ed Jew, who noted that 95,000 small businesses in San Francisco will continue to use plastic bags. Jew, who in his third month in office has taken to critiquing his colleagues for being too quick to burden residents and businesses with new mandates, complained that Mirkarimi's legislation has taken too much of the board's time.
"We need to move on to address the larger issues in San Francisco," Jew said shortly before he voted against the ordinance.
Let the pyramid building begin.

As a conservative, I have to say-
Local control for local interests.
This is muchos better then a Presidential Executive Order or some goofy Governor mandating his will on the whole state. If San Franciscans don't like it, they'll vote the guy out of office. And the rest of us are never affected by it.

CBS Sunday Morning had a piece on recycling plastic this morn, only 25% of plastics get recycled in this country, and we've increasing plastic production by 20% over the last several years. It appears were badly falling behind in plastic recycling.
Interesting note: Only 5% of those plastic grocery/store bags get recycled, and it only costs 1 cent to make each bag but it costs recyclers like 19 cents to recycle it because they said it causes various problems and jams the machines because their so thin and they caught in every little cog and wheel.
