Was anyone a collector in their younger years? I used to collect baseball and football cards from 87~94 (ages 7-14). I also have a few autographs here and there.
So, what do you collect? Note: STD's do not qualify as a collection.

Do Marbles Count?
As A Kid, F_S And The Neighbor Boys All Collected And Traded And Played For Marbles. The Most Sought After Ones Were The Clear-Colored Large Ones (Called "Boulders"), And The Gem Of Gems Were The "Boulder Steelies" Which Were Basically Just Large Round Bearings That We Thought Were Worth Their Weight In Gold.
Occasionally, A Pretty Boulder With A Pattern Would Appear That Would Also Be Sought After. F_S Remembers One In Particular That Was Orange And Brown On White, And We Named It "Spaghetti And Meatballs". Whoever Was In Possession Of Spaghetti And Meatballs At Any Point In Time Was The King Of The Neighborhood!
As a youngster I collected comic books and baseball cards, but I don't really collect anything these days.
I hate clutter.

I collected baseball cards and like Cougar, stopped for the exact same reasons. I then got into collecting autographs.

That's one hell of a collection. Do you have a favorite? You must have some good stories to go along with some of those autographs.

I pick things up I am a collector
And things, well things, they tend to accumulate
I have this net, it drags behind me
It picks up feelings for me to feed upon
There are times, plenty of times I wish I could let it go
But it's time to breed and it's time to grow inside me
There are times, plenty of times I wish I could let it go
But it's time to make me think, things I don't want to know
I'm trying to fit it all inside
I'm trying to open my mouth wide
I'm trying not to choke
and swallow it all
swallow it all
swallow it all
swallow it all
I am the plague, I am the swarm
All your heart sticks on me, and I keep it warm
And they'll make me stay they won't let me leave
There are so goddamn many of them it gets hard to breathe
I'm trying to fit it all inside
I'm trying to open my mouth wide
I'm trying not to choke inside
I am a good boy
and I will swallow it all
swallow it all

I have had some great experiences. One time a baseball player gave me a ride home after a game and he came in and saw my collection. It was fun watching him point to different players that he knew.
I had the cops called on me as I was standing on a public sidewalk near a golf course waiting for Reggie Jackson and Larry Bird to come by. The cop let me go cause I wasn't doing anything illegal. When Reggie approached the hole, golf course employees shielded me so I couldn't get near him. When Reggie finished that hole, I hollered for him to request an autograph, he stopped and said "sure" then signed a card for me. The golf course employees faces were priceless. I told Reggie about the cop showing up and he laughed, then said "you wanna ride with me the rest of the day? I'll take you to meet Larry Bird, too." Apparently Larry was injured that day, so instead of golfing the whole course, he stayed at the 9 hole so that everyone would get to swing with him. I took Reggie up on his offer and watched him golf the rest of the day and talked baseball in between holes.
I could write stories for days about my experiences, but those 2 are my favorites.

I collected Wacky Packs, (http://www.wacky-packs.com/) I had complete sets for 7 series and odds and ends for the rest. Mint condition, catalogued, the whole thing.
Remeber these?

During that big revival of the baseball card fad about 15 years ago I got into about as seriously as a 14 year old kid can. Went to shows, bought sets of cards, collected baseball, football, basketball and hockey cards, etc. I have a couple thousand cards that are basically worthless in my parents attic and a small binder of some decent ones in my closet. I figure the fad will come back eventually, the good ones that I have will jump up in price and I'll sell them then.
Have some rookie cards for the following guys
Ivan Rodriguez
Tom Glavine
Frank Thomas
Barry Bonds
Ken Griffey Jr.
Chipper Jones
Brett Favre
Emmit Smith
Barry Sanders
Steve Young
Shaquille O'Neal
Alonzo Mourning
Also got into the autograph thing a little also. I used to send cards to some players and would get them back autographed (no way to tell if they're real though). I also used to go to the Braves spring training camp as a kid because it was right near where my grandmother lived. My personal favorite of that timeframe was getting Deion Sanders autograph and seeing he made the first S in his last name a dollar sign.
Of course, I still don't hold a grudge against Tom Glavine for not even looking in the direction of an eager smiling lil kid who just wanted an autograph and maybe a little recognition from his favorite player. He was probably just busy, walking off the field at the end of practice. Completely ignoring all the fans just wanting a simple look, maybe a signed baseball card ... fucking prick.

Every time I start a response it ends up a 'dig me' materialism post.
Yes. Lots.

Baseball Cards.. going through them now...
currently in the process of making a "wall" of phillies in my office...
gonna take about 1200 of em
I collected sports cards when I was a kid. I still get a call from my mom every year asking me what I'd like to do with them.
I don't collect anything now...too much work.
