View Full Version : The "Plant The Flag" Challenge

This was something brought up on the show last week and I found it to be an intriguing question. Here's the scenario -

You have one year to travel the world. You can go anywhere you want and see everything you've always wanted to see. At the end of the year, however, you must plant a flag in the ground somewhere, at any location you choose. For the rest of your life you can never go more than 5 miles from the flag. If you accept these terms you will receive one hundred million dollars.

Would you do it?

There are no "trick answers" such as planting the flag in your car, a boat, or an airplane. It must be planted in terra firma.

i see this as a win win

you go every where you can in a year

then pick a place you can never leave 5 miles from, well if you've gone out and went everywhere you wanted its not that bad to have to just stay in one place forever

for me it would be san diego, near the beach

To be honest, I read it wrong. I thought it said you can't go within 5 miles of wherever the flag was planted.

My disdain for this place grows everyday.

I probably wouldn't take the deal. I love travelling a little bit too much. I like being able to wake up, and drive to philly if I want a cheesesteak. 100 million would be nice though.

If I had to take the deal, I really think manhatten is the only place in the world I would consider planting it. You would never run out of stuff to do. There is interesting food, parks, beaches (not great beachs, but beaches), museums. The architecture is gorgeous. I think 100 million is plenty of money to live in new york. Even at 5% interest, you would have to spend 5 million a year, just to spend the interest.

Also, a five mile radius isn't that small, it's almost 80 square miles.

MB is with F_S. I can get by with on wits and skill. If a whim strikes me to see Montana or Sonoma, Patagonia or the South Island of New Zealand, I will find a way to get there. I refuse to be tied to a place because it offers me wealth. My wealth is what I have in my mind and in the yet untapped potential to learn new things and see new places and have new experiences. There are not enough riches in the world to make me sing in a cage.

I would have no idea as to where to put it the flag. i would love trying to figure it out by traveling the world for a year.

i would need a place with good food, a beach, nice weather.

i would do this in a second. i would choose manhatten, midtown right under central park. you have everything you need at your finger tips, including hoboken and queens to the right and left of you. 5 miles covers about the whole island. and with 100 million to spend, you would be able to do whatever you wanted

i meant what ever you wanted in manhatten.

here is what you need to ask youself. you have all the chance in the world to do all that shit now, and do you do it? i could do any of those things you listed. I have a good job, no kids, and yet i sit on this fucking messageboard day after day and post. I also eat a lot. i could do both of those things from manhatten while i counted my 100 million dollars.

i do see you rpoint F_S, it has potential to be a boring life, but i think choosing manhatten is what makes it interesting. Ron has said it on the show, he has been there for 5 years and has not even come close to experience manhatten.

Mendocino, California.

Fantastic Wine, Parks, beautiful ocean views and untouched seascapes, opportunities for art and musical ventures galore, great food and lodging for family and friends when they visit.

A little piece of paradise in wine country.

idon't think any body would plant a flag anywhere either, but the topic of this thread is the challenge is that you have to pick a place.

I don't think I'd except the challenge but if I did, I'm going to say Lisbon Portugal. I've never been there, but it's on the ocean, from what I've seen a beautiful place, and I'd want to pick somewhere I've never been just so I would be able to experience the most new things I possibly I could while stuck in the same place.

With $100 million dollars, I want (wait, let me do the math...ah, gotta look it up on wikipedia...I was RIGHT..pi times r squared...that's 5 squared....25 times 3.14...78.5 square miles...right?)

For $100 million dollars, I want 78.5 square miles of uninhabited temperate land, with the slightest bit of the oval overlapping the beach...say in Costa Rica. Then, with my vast wealth I would build my own Xanadu for me, my wife and my offspring.

Actually, as long as I had my wife with me, it wouldn't matter where we were.:king:

I could never do it. I would like to see the look on anyone's face who made this crazy deal when I say "Well I'm off to Greece for a month, just felt like going. Man I just love the freedom to go anywhere I want. Can you imagine being stuck in one place for the rest of your life? I'll send a postcard. Seeya." It would suck for that person to watch me walk away with a big smile on my face.
