Is this the year it doesn't go back to Japan? With this news (http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/6960638?MSNHPHCP&GT1=10136), I'm thinking yes!

I'm actually planning on attending the hot dog eating contest this year, so I'm especially pissed that kobayahi isn't going to be there. I'm still expecting that it'll be a good time though.

If Kobayashi can recover and defend his hot dog eating title, where will this accomplishment rank in the pantheon of sports injury/illness comebacks?

IMO:

1) Kobayashi
2) Lance Armstrong
3) Ben Hogan survives near fatal car accident, goes on to win 6 more majors.
4) Willis Reed
5) Kirk Gibson

I remember watching a show on MTV "Real Life" and it had an episode about competitive eaters. It showed what people do to prepare, etc. Was actually very good for an MTV show.

Kobayashi is a fucking beast.

What about MJ's Flu Game or Ric Flair's survival of a plane crash, or Willis McGahee's comeback from a destroyed knee, or that kid from San Jose State that lost his leg from a football injury, but came back and played anyway

Or when Bob Baun broke his leg in the 1964 Stanley Cup Finals, came back IN THE SAME GAME and scored the WINNING GOAL in overtime

hmmmm.... mustard belt?

maybe ron should table his tinkering with the smoke pants idea and shift toward developing "half-smoke pants". i think it would be much more marketable, and would go very well with a mustard belt

If he made it hickory smoke then he would dominate the world of fashion.

I think this is a complete work. Call me a conspiracy theorist if you will but Kobayashi is not injured at all. He is so dominant that Nathans has set it up that he might be injured. He has given the US no chance to win and people are tired of him. If they think he's gonna lose they will come out to see it happen. Mark my words: Kobayashi keeps the belt and sets a new record on the 4th.

I'm thinking the same thing. Smoke shorts (easier to control) with a mustard or even a multi-condiment switchable belt. Maybe a spray-on Relish Tee? or coat?

Conspiracy theorist. That American dude just set the new world record, so from a marketing point of view, having him go heads-up against Kobayashi would be the way to go. To pretend Kobayashi wasn't going to be there would be a mistake.

I love the thought of Kobayahi showing up in a wheelchair and his jaw wrapped in bandages and then he plows through 70 dogs...
