View Full Version : The Formula: What time is time?

Maybe the Oracle can help answer the question. The question that seems to be on everyone's mind lately. Does the comedic formula still hold true or does it need to be updated? As it last stood this was the formula to the best of my memory:
Tragedy+ Time= Funny
If its changed I understand. If it hasn't what exactly is the minimum for the Time variable. Maybe the Tragedy variable impacts the Time variable. If a new formula has been developed or if we can nail one down then I think we should. Discuss.

F_S Heard A Comedian Around 1995 Say Something Like "Has Enough Time Passed To Make A Joke About Lincoln's Assasination"?
So Yeah, The Formula Still Holds, At Least To Some Degree.
Has Enough Time Passed To Make Fun Of Lleeder's Birthday?

I would have to say that a more accurate formula would be TIME / TRAGEDY = FUNNY. Because the larger the tragedy, the larger the time has to be for it to be funny. If time is too small, then the result will be less than funny. There should probably be some exponent in there somewhere too, because the growth of the humor does increase in a linear fashion with the growth of time, and eventually, with enough time, the joke will get less funny.

so, time = funny x tragedy? interesting.

Actually, I never say "too soon", I just usually acknowledge that I'm a soulless person, then Mikey chastises me for not thinking before posting.
And I'm not pointing fingers, but a LOT of you need to stop riding your high horse re: Benoit.

sorry but a "joke" asking if he would chop her to floor during an argument is just not funny. maybe in a week or so it would be.

Please point out where I said that.
My "spousal abuse" joke came from the Austin/Debra relationship, fuelled by the fact that Debra threw everyone under the bus to get some spotlight time. Just like Mero, Wilkes, etc. are crawling out of the woodwork.

But don't you see!? You're only a week or so away from being a real person!

Implication was there. Don't get all upset. I'm kind of annoyed with other people who said I'm "apauling" because I was theorizing what could have happened. The truth was much more appalling than anything I could have come up with outside of the worst case scenario. I was the first one to breech the subject of murder-suicide, and that about 20 minutes after Fallon told me.

I'll give you a couple of examples.
During the murders, Benoit sent some curious text messages. In another thread, someone made a comment that Scott Proctor should kill Joe Torre. I responded with a joke formatted in the same manner as Benoit's text messages. The message was that Proctor was a dangerous killer. Not making fun of Daniel or Nancy, just the fact that Benoit pulled some crazy shit. And I got nailed for it.
Now this:
http://media.uselessjunk.com/images/stories/benoit_8.jpg
Is scary, sad, and funny all at the same time. It's just in context and how people see it.
Your mileage may vary, but I don't take JOY in the fact that a 7 year old kid with special needs is dead, and a wife was murdered by a man who obviously had some sort of mental breakdown. I find the humor in the terrible things in life, because I use humor to rationalize and work though the horrible shit that people are capable of doing.
People make jokes about Chris Hansen all the time. Megan Kanka was found 10 miles away from my house. Do I get upset? No. Because I can understand where people can come from. It's part of a rationalizing process. It's not inhuman, it actually makes you MORE human, because it enables you to face tragedy head on and not dwell on it.
