No surprise that #7,5,3 are all in the Northeast area though.

there should be a law passed where if anyone causing an accident on the parkway or turnpike due to careless driving and causes a 2 hour delay "and they don't get hurt". Everyone sitting in traffic that passes by the accident should get at least one slap to that person's face...

accidents would go fucking way down after that, i'm tellin ya

I live in NJ now so if theres bias... but there isnt... there are so many worse places.

The parkway/turnpike delays from accidents are a small shadow of the constant, ingoing, day and night delays on long island.

And the Wash Beltway is a specialized driving torture system; anyone down there will tell ya, they have no pride in it to BS about; it's hell.

Ever see the Penns Turnpike? When has the entire thing Not been under construction/repair. A pothole minefield.

I've always heard LA is the worst.

Actually, I've lived in Westchester/NJ/Long Island... and Long Island has been the worst traffic wise for me so far. NJ was bad, but I think it's definitely worse here in LI.

i have never been to LA, but the traffic in DC was AMAZING when I was there. it is kind of odd, cause it feels like it is moving, but it still takes you 1.5 hours to go 8 miles.

I'd rather beat the shit out of the assholes who slow down to look at an accident...ONTHE OTHER SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY.

We're #1...This story ranks New Jersey roads (http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/national/2007/06/29/81312.htm)as the worst...

New Jersey's gridlocked highways, poor pavement conditions and high repair costs put the state last in overall cost-effectiveness for the eighth consecutive year.

"Drivers in four lucky states enjoyed zero congestion: Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming."

Of course these states have zero traffic. They have such low populations.

"Some 83.33 percent of California's urban interstates are overcrowded, followed by Minnesota at 77.78 percent and New Jersey at 73.35 percent, according to the 16th annual survey by The Reason Foundation, a Los Angeles-based nonpartisan group"

Minnesota may have a high traffic percentage b/c they have less roads then needed or still only have 1 lane highways? But NJ is the most developed state and congested out our asses. We also have 3, 4, 5 and 6 lane highways, along with more paved streets based on state size then any other state and yet we still have more traffic then most. This state sucks when it comes to driving. Think of it this way, I live 11 miles from manhatten. Some days it takes me close to an hour to get from my front door to the NY side of the holland tunnel.

during my short time in LA i would have to say the traffic makes NJ look like the most perfect drive in the morning. Driving from Brentwood to downtown LA would take with traffic about 2 hours in the morning which was about a 20 mile drive. The highways are absolutely the worse thing ever.

What An Unfair Survey. The Problem Is POPULATION DENSITY.

In NJ, We Have 8,400,000 People Crammed Into A Lousy 7,400 Square Miles. With 1,134 People Per Square Mile NJ Is The Most Densely Poplulated State In The Country. How Could Our Roads NOT Be Crowded?

By Way Of Comparison, Wyoming Has 493,782 People In 97,100 Square Miles, Or Just 5 (That's Right, FIVE) People Per Square Mile.

And PH Is Right, LA Is Horrific; As Is Boston (The Big Dig); Atlanta, And DC!!

I hate to say it, but left turns in New Jersey are baaaad. I always cringe when I see a shoobie attempt one. Just waiting to see him turned into a jello stain on the oncoming traffic lane.

Driving in those states would bother me. With no traffic I would keep thinking we had been attacked and I was the only dummy still trying to get to work.

Exactly....and 4 is too low for Maryland too. If i leave work at 5, I get caught in at least 4 traffic jams (on the Parkway, on 32, on 29 and the tail end of 40)

Plus, 495 and the routes to NoVa FROM Maryland are always a mess, and I haven't even brought up the 295/395 Wilson Bridge area, nor have i yet mentioned 50, or the 95/495 split in Maryland. I used to have to go on 10 different major roads every morning to avoid traffic so i could go to school on time (40 to 100 to 295 to 198 to 197 to 410 to 201 to Paint Branch Parkway to 1 to Knox Road)

No subway systems in California, outside a of small one in San Fran (BART). NYC Bus system puts theirs to shame also. L.A. is very spread out, you pretty much get around by car no matter where you want to go in most of California, though SF is a great walking town. Not too big, you can get just about anywhere on foot.

Don't get me started on the greater Fredericksburg area in Virginia or the greater Frederick area in Maryland either (particularly the 15/270/40 split...and how could I forget the 270 spur in the discussion of NoVa/MD awful traffic?)

Although I lived in NJ for many years, I would have to say that I always hated driving around the NVA/DC/MD area... traffic was always awful. North Jersey was heavy, but I can't ever recall a time worse than the aforementioned area.

Then I decided to make the move to KY and figured I would escape all the traffic woes. Boy was I wrong. I lived in Bowling Green, KY for about 6 months and it was terrible. I lived 1.1 miles from my work and I can recall normal traffic circumstances in to which it would take me up to 40 minutes to get home. Couple that with the fact that nobody knew how to drive. On a daily basis I would almost get hit at least once going to/coming from work. It's just crazy to think that some bad traffic problems are in low population areas.

Yeah, I was surprised about Kentucky as well. I made a run a few times to Louisville, and this spot where I-64 and I-65 meet up is a real bitch. Really freaked me out the first time I went through it.

Doesn't give you much time to get in the lane you need to be in to make the highway change.
Especially when come in from the left and have to go over 3 lanes to get to the exit lane on the right with an 18 wheeler.

Speaking from experience, the Twin Cities are a fucking nightmare. The population has grown entirely too fast for the infrastructure and the highways haven't been able to support it. There are plenty of 8 lane highways (both sides), but in the metro-area it's often just not enough.
