As someone training to be a psychologist, this issue somes up with us as well. According toa Supreme Court ruling, if someone makes a threat on womeone or against themselves, reporting this supercedes confidentiality.

As for AA, I wish anybody who is in it good luck and praise their attempt at bettering and controlling their lives, but AA is VERY cultlike in nature and is not more successful, statistically, than going cold turkey...I dont know why religion has to come into getting clean. If you are an atheist, you shouldnt feel welcome trying to get help?
