I decided to give four weeks, since I'm not leaving on bad terms and I want to give them plenty of time to find a replacement and get them up to speed before I leave. I've always found giving my notice incredibly nerve wracking, even when it was at jobs I've hated. I got really anxious leading up to it today, since my boss has always been really cool, and for the most part I'm happy with this job. It looks like there's no turning back now. Chicago here I come!

Holy Crap!! My boss just came in and brought up the possibility of me continuing to work for them from Chicago. I'm really conflicted, because even though I am happy with this job, I should be making more than I am right now, and I saw this as a simple opportunity to leave a job for more than just money reasons. I haven't been given a solid offer, and I was told the powers that be haven't committed to it, but if I know how these people work they would much rather keep me on then have to find someone else to fit in here, mostly because to find someone to do what I do would probably cost them more money. But having said that, its also been a dream of mine to work from home. I really gotta think about this one.

say you would consider, but it would have to be for more money.

also working from home is not all it is cracked up to be, I do it and I hate it

I also think that would have a negative effect on me meeting new people, which is something I'm really going to need to do since I know a total of one person in Chicago, and I don't think Oprah will want to hang out with me.

You can meet more people than just from work in a place like Chicago. Gyms, libraries, bookstores, there's plenty of clubs (not dance clubs, like hiking clubs, biking clubs, etc)

Work from home, have that be your safety net. If you find an opportunity you can't deny, then you can change jobs, but it REALLY doesn't hurt to have a bird in the hand rather than going to chicago blind.

Trust me on this. Take the work-from-home offer, get acclimated for Chicago for six months. You might HATE it and want to come back. You never know.

A friend of mine from Maryland upped and moved to Chicago without knowing a soul. She was miserable in a year and came back.

No board characters or joke shit in the That's Life Forum. It is clearly posted here (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=52177) at the top of the forum and isn't open to discussion. Don't like it? Don't post in this forum.

And just a reminder... When you create a board character, we know what your other account is. If we have to ban you, we do not ban your account, we ban you. So we will ban your other accounts as well.

Enough derailing. You want to comment on this, click my name and PM me. Anyone off topic in the thread will be dealt with appropriately.

Congratulations! What a great feeling to make a move like that.

Chicago is great. I'm from there, so I'm biased, but you'll love it. Just get out there before it gets too cold. You'll meet plenty of people.

Working from home is DEFINITELY NOT all it's cracked up to be. I'm lucky because I go away for work when I'm not working at home, but if I'm at home a full week it drives me nuts.

My two cents: If your boss asked you to stay with the company in Chicago, you ask them for every dream thing you could possibly think of - salary, bonus, the whole thing. What you make now is irrelevant. You're going to Chicago to make more money, right?

I have a theory that every once in a while you have to ask for something so outrageous that you wouldn't think that they would possibly pay it, and you have to recognize those opportunities.

Thanks for the words of support guys. After a lot of thought, I've decided its best to just move on. Its a good time to make a transition with the company. The project I'm working on is ending in the next week or two, and a new one is starting up. If I agree to work with them then I'm pretty much commiting to staying on through this next project, and I really don't want to commit to them for that long.

In my excitement about putting in my notice I forgot that the majority of people here don't know the details of my situation. I'm moving to Chicago with my girlfriend, because she will be attending Northwestern Law in the fall. I've been to Chicago a few times, my Dad's family is in South Bend, Indiana, and we always fly into Chicago when we visit, and make sure to spend at least one night in the city. I have had a really good time every time I've gone.

Its actually just my Dad's family that is in South Bend, he lives in Fairfax. The main reason I decided to just move on was that it felt like the 'safe' option to keep working for the same company. I don't see any reason at this point in my life to choose the safe option without there being other bonuses. Also, the more I thought about working from home, the more I started to dread it.

BIG CHANGE IN PLANS

Today, a little more than 24 hours before we were to board a plane to Chicago, NYU called my girlfriend today and informed her they have accepted her into their law program. So, now we're changing our travel plans last minute, and will be heading to NY tomorrow to find an apartment this weekend! Of course its not as big a deal to find an apartment the first time out, since its a lot easier to get to NY and back, but we hope to work it out, since we are moving at the end of the month! So, any body have any suggestions for an area to live? We were thinking Brooklyn, but I've only ever been to Manhattan, so I have no idea what its like there.

Just another update, in case anybody is interested. I got a job offer today from my former employer. So, the first week in August, I'm moving to NYC on the 1st, my birthday is on the 2nd, and I start my new job on 3rd. If anybody is interested in celebrating with me let me know. I don't really know Manhattan yet, but I will probably be drinking in some chill bar somewhere on the 3rd, its going to be a pretty big day for me.
