Michael Bay is a retarded director and Transformers are a Hasbro toy. How did I know that two combined would somehow work? Over the top goofiness combined with the overheated ridiculousness of Bay's style delivers a tremendous amount of fun.
Most of the credit goes to Shia LaBeouf whose natural charisma compiled with a lot of hard work, really holds the film together.
Movie Rating - 3 1/2 gees

It was pretty good. The action was first rate... albeit a little hard to follow what was going on because the Transformers were so big it just looked like a lot of metal flashing across the screen.
The story was good, but there were about half a dozen scenes that could have been shortened or even just cut out. Like the robots hiding outside Sam's house? C'mon.
And the girl, who ridiculously, convienently ends up with Sam, is way too hot. In fact, she was the most unrealistic character. I'd sooner believe robots from space were here than a girl like that would be in high school.
It's worth the price for the effects alone. But I'm not going to see it again in the theater, especially with all the dorks clapping everytime an autobot opens his mouth. Shut up!

I agree with you on 3 of those points.
the screen needed to be 10 times larger to fit them on the screen when the fight scenes happened. the part at Sam's house had me huffing and saying "Come on, man...." and That blonde computer expert chick deserved the higher billing. She was seen more than Megan Fox and acted better. I didn't catch the other girls name, but her accent was so hot.
and I only clapped at the end of the movie......
The main thing I loved about the movie was how the development of the characters went. They didn't throw the crowd into a story that was already on going.....
and it didn't go all Star Wars 3 on us and squeeze in 20 years of stories into 25 minutes at the end of the movie.
I figured it was gonna fall flat on its face, but I was delightfully surprised.
I loved this movie....if I look like a nerd about it, then Nerd I shall be.

I saw the trailer for the new JJ Abrams movie before Transformers. Might have been the most effective trailer I've ever seen. I couldn't stop thinking about it during the movie.
Here's some info I found on wikipedia:
Cloverfield is a 2008 film being produced by J.J. Abrams, written by Drew Goddard and directed by Matt Reeves. The film is scheduled to be released by Paramount Pictures on January 18th, 2008. The premise is a giant alien known as "The Parasite" invades Earth and it is filmed entirely with handheld cameras.
Also known is that the movie isn't even done filming and the trailer was filmed before the movie. Not much is known about the movie, and it has been widely regarded as a secret movie and Cloverfield may be a temporary working title.
A teaser trailer was shown prior to the screening of Transformers. The trailer consisted of raw camera footage. During the trailer a group of young adults were seen throwing a party for a friend who is moving. They feel vibrations and assume that it is an earthquake and quickly evacuate to the rooftop. Once there, they see explosions and debris flying. At the end the Statue of Liberty's head hits the street right in front of them. The title of the film was not shown during the trailer.
very effective...

Cloverfield! That Abrahams trailer rockeddddd.
Anyway, if building up story is having some made-up-just-for-the-flick SCORPION transformer attack a group of extras in army fatigues for a half hour, then we better write a letter to Woody Allen. He's been doing this shit all wrong.
The entire concept of that ridiculous scorpion doesn't even make sense in the overrated Transformers universe. Why is it shaped like a scorpion? This one takes on the form of living creatures instead of the technology of humans? And for some reason it attacks like a scorpion yet also burrows through the sand?
Anyway, awful.

but it added to the film. It showed the real enemy behind the attacks on the base and the security files. you seem to be focusing more on how they looked more so than the actual story.
but then again, your probably the only person I heard that didn't enjoy it.

That was story? They could've done that without the scene, and without the awful scorpion. Id say the picture of the actual transformer on the base was proof enough (it was, they used the picture of the original 'former from the beginning later in the film, not the random and worthless scorpion).
This was not a story-driven film, so I don't understand why that is the 'treasure' of it for you. The action is what it was- explosions and blur, great for the kids and dolts. The story was secondary and nearly nonexistent, it only existed because somebody has to justify their job as a film-maker and hire some shoddy writer (and director).
It was the worst Michael Bay film I've ever seen- for what it's worth.

I'm pretty excited to see it tonight. Gonna see it in DLP, which is really the only way to go. you keep saying there was no story....there was a full story. It started with letting us know about the Allspark, and let us know that Megatron was on Earth before any of the Autobots. It showed the attack on the US base that got everyones attention and started a blame game between the countries that could've evenutally led to war, but no one was to blame. Then it went to letting the audience know WHO Sam Witwicky was, explained how he came in contact with Bumblebee. It explained how the girl came into the picture. Then that "pointless Scorpion" (as you call it) followed the survivors through the desert and eventually led to the point that the actual identity of the attackers were not another country, but an alien lifeform.
I'm not gonna explain this whole film...I'll let the people see it and decide for themselves.
The development between Sam and the love he had for the car was there. It felt more real than the relationship between the girl and himself.
My main problem with watching movies these days is that they are way over analyzed. People have forgotten that its just a FUCKING MOVIE, its made for enjoyment, not to be torn apart and looked at like a science experiment. I'm guilty of it....I try not to do it as much anymore.

Scorponok has appeared in almost every transformers series from 87 through 04, including the fucking comics
Oh and there was toy for this made up character....
When Scorponok passes by, all that will be left by the time he is gone are destruction and misery - no class of citizen is safe from his venomous wrath, as he takes pleasure in inflicting suffering upon any and all that he can. As leader of the Decepticon Headmasters, Scorponok is binary-bonded to Lord Zarak, the leader of the evil Nebulons, and wields an anti-gravity gun in robot mode. A Triple Changer, Scorponok's primary alternate mode is that of a giant scorpion, with claws that can crush mountains and a tail that fires deadly electric blasts. His third mode is a defense base, outfitted with assorted tracking and communication equipment, repair and constructicon bays, as well as copious amounts of weaponry. His base mode is patrolled by Fasttrack, a partially-autonomous armoured vehicle that can transform into a robot mode armed with twin photon cannons.
Scorponok is the second-largest toy from the original Transformers toyline, slightly taller than Trypticon, and second only to his opposite number, Fortress Maximus. Originally, his Tech Spec statistics were printed upside down, resulting in a grossly inaccurate representation of his abilities (suggesting, for example, that his Strength was merely 3). Later production runs of the toy bore modified statistics - though they were again incorrect as they were consistently two points lower than those revealed by plugging Lord Zarak into the chest meter. (This may be due to the blue line of the tech specs card being printed in yet another inverted form -- mirrored, as opposed to upside down.)

The deaths are the following:
Jazz - killed by Megatron
Bonecrusher - killed by Optimus on the Highway
Frenzy - killed by his own blades (and I swear to god, I think that motherfucker said "KREMZEEK!" in one scene.)
Scorponok - Not dead, just badly damaged and still in Qatar somewhere
Devastator - Killed by the Army
Blackout - Killed by Lennox
Megatron - killed by Sam
Meaning that Barricade and Starscream are still alive. Also, did Optimus crush that piece of the Allspark or did he just keep it for himself?

Saw the movie last night. Thought it was great. The comic relief parts were better than I thought they would be. There was definitely like 20 minutes of the movie that needed to be cut out. The whole scene with autobots outside the kids house, I was like, why is this going on forever. Kinda stupid.
There were also some things that just didn't make sense. Like why the hell did they want to give the cube back to the american military at the end? It just didn't make sense. Why wouldn't they just give it to optimus prime. They had a perfect chance too. Made absolutely no sense. There was tons of shit like that in the movie.
Regardless, it's definitely a movie to check out.

Actually, you're the one who is not reading posts.
You were proven wrong that Scorponok was not made up for the movie. And even then, there are G1 Transformers that are based on animals - Insecticons and Dinobots immediately spring to mind.
Spoilers:
The whole Scorponok sequence was actually a lynchpin of the entire movie - because it showed that the US Military could actually take on the Decepticons, which led to the communications blackout.

defintiely left the options for a New Movie with Starscream becoming the leader of the Decepticons, but you all know what happened when Megatron was reformed as Galvatron.

Talking sequals...I dont think Megatron is dead quite yet...and here comes the transformers dork that I was when I was a kid...wait for it...
If you remember in the first episode of the cartoon the decepticons were defeated and also dropped into the sea where megatron's eyes lit back up as he was sinking to the bottom of the ocean where the decepticons regrouped and formed a base there.

Like this one's for for everyone; during the day the kids can play robot fighting, and by night dad can rob a liquor store. 2for1 value.

Do they say "More Than Meets the Eye"?
"you think im shallow dont you"- megan fox
"No, i think theres more to you then meets the eye" - shia
and then Optimus says some bs "theres definately more to them then meets the eye" line at the end... i wish they didnt say that but w.e
Movie ROCKED HARRRRDDDDDDD.... easy top 10 movies all time
finally something to offset the gayness that was Live free or Die hard.. Yippee K..FUCK OFF... that movie blew donkey shit out of its pussy
so it goes like this since may released its summer movies: Transformers > Pirates > Die Hard > Spider-Man 3
i want to only count action on this one, because im hearing shrek 3 is no good and i wont see that Rat movie
Anyone who hasnt seen Transformers yet... do yourself a favor and see the best thing this summer
Ill go as far as saying the best thing since 300, and its up there for the best movie of the year with 300
looks like 07 is the year of action
BadGuyDavey

i have noticed that in the past 5 years or so, that is the case in almost all action movies. I think gladiator might be the 1st one i really noticed it with, but a bunch of other movies the move the camera's so much to make it look like a speedy punch you have no idea what is going on
i agree with you... i liked 300 for slowing it down a peg... but even then they had some scenes like that
im am all against the camera taking to many turns during a movie... it should be locked in like that slow-mo side angle scene in 300 when lenoidas was whoopin some persian ass
Also for the record... I didnt know this but, scorponok was the shadow you see in mars... its lame that he never transformed, and even in the game (which i did not buy... i borrowed it from work)
anyways... yes scorponok was in the old shows... even up 2 beast wars
Paul I hate you for saying transformers was just ok... i dont think i could disagree with you on many of the movies you talk about... but your wrong, transformers was everything that it meant to be, and all the hype was worth it.. it will be nominated for something, if only for Shia's performance...
Is anyone with me on saying the movie started to get deep when Optimus kept talking about how we should be able to choose if we wish to live or die... I got goose bumps when they talked about how we wouldn't be ready for "their" war
Micheal Bay may suck, but he shines in the pinoff scenes... like for instance when they fight scorponok and when they fight frenzy... Frenzy was a definate Bad Boys 2 "blondey dreads" scene.. but even the Scorponok fight was a definate homage to bad boys, by making it funny, yet intense... you really felt like there was a war going on between the humans and scorponok

I agree with you- one of the best movies this year (but there isnt much that was good), however in my opinion- you are forgetting Zodiac- not exactly an action movie so I may be taking your quote out of context- but if I were to vote- Zodiac takes the cake this year so far.

The actual origins of Optimus Prime are not clear. The leading theory to Prime's origin (and one backed by hard science) is that Chuck Norris was making love to Wonder Woman in the back of a truck, and when Chuck Norris withdrew at the last moment some of his seed was spilled onto the floor of the truck. Nine months later, Optimus Prime was born. Found to be a child prodigy with an IQ of 284, Optimus excelled in school, graduating from high school at the age of 7. By the time he had reached the age of 13, Optimus had acquired 17 PhDs, 4 law degrees and an Oscar. By 15, Optimus had been awarded 5 Nobel Prizes, 2 Fields Medals and a box of chocolate. When not studying, he would spend his afternoons wandering the cotton fields and eating moon pies, interrupted only by his lust for the addictive substance Energon. Optimus is best known for his dedicated work as leader of the Heroic Autobots.

You complain constantly that this was "dumb" - it's a movie for kids and the kids who are now adults who grew up with this. It's not supposed to make you think. I'm not backing you up, I'm just wondering what exactly you would have done to make this a better movie.

I'm not the one who was claiming there was a story. So I think you may be mis-directing your comments a bit.
When I went in to see it, it wasn't for Turturro or Shia- they just ended up being the only highlights of the 2hour shitfest for me.
Shia and Turturro was genius. You obviously didn't get the Turturro character, so I'm not going to sit here typing up an explanation of why I liked it for you. As far as Shia? Well, he's the main character, like it or not. And he was great.
To make this a better film- for one I would've WRITTEN it. It was awfully written, and every character (whether it be voice or live-action) was awfully acted (ofcourse, besides Shia or Turturro).
I also would've DIRECTED it, some of the worst directing in film history. I spent more time wondering "WHY THE FUCK IS THAT IN SLOW MOTION?!" than I should ever have to.
Do you want me to define a bad movie for you? Everything about this was bad. I'm not going to sit here and rewrite the script for you, just picture any scene in your head- that's why I didn't like it.
I don't understand why you're this upset by my not liking this film, anyway. I'm not sitting here trying to dissuade people who say they loved it- I am even explaining parts I loved about it. What's the problem here?
I said there was no story, and that the existent story was awful (because my adversary was claiming the story was well-written)- you agreed with me. What else is there to say?

I think the fact that you wrote several paragraphs worth of review (after citing your 'one sentence review' on some blog) and lengthy rebuttals to anyone who liked it is evidence enough that you ARE trying to dissuade people who say they loved it with cliche sentences like "you obviously don't get it maaaan" or "This shit can't hold a candle to (insert legendary director here)'s movies". I also think you're in Tenbatz's crosshairs cuz Balzac pretty much did factually pwn a couple of your inaccuracies and you gave a weak response. That's Alan-Alda-Vs.-Leo-DiCaprio-in-TheAviator-weak.
In the end, it's just your opinion... and it's cool to spark debate. I just don't agree with what you're saying insofar as your opinion being the one true opinionated review of a film that, frankly, I am surprised to hear good reviews about in this thread.
I think that surprise is a bit refreshing considering the chunky bunches of shit America (and Bay in particular) cinema has been diaretically shitting all over our collective cultural consciousnesses.
And yeah, I liked Bad Boys II. Refused to see Pearl Harbor. Favorite director is Kurosawa, followed closely by Tarantino and Scorcese. TCM is a fantastic channel to have for those who are too lazy to haunt seven different stores in the hopes of finding that one particular foreign flick or classic. But I still like my flavorful crap, so long as the experience is fun. And on the basis of this thread, it sounds like Transformers is more fun than it isn't.

I LOVED TRANSFORMERS the toys. This movie just doesn't look good to me. I don't give a shit who directed it. I know it's just supposed to be a summer action flick, but I'd much rather watch a Schwarzeneggar movie.

as far as Turturro goes...that's Micheal Bay's idea of comic relief and in the context of this movie goes it works....I think it's good for Turturro, too....to do such a broad comedic role......I mean he's far from laugh out loud funny but it adds to the energy
I did not think any of his shit was funny (except maybe the "Superman" shirt) and I don't think it added anything to the energy. Leave it to Bay to actually make a good movie while at the same time have a great actor like Turturro and turn him into the worst thing in a movie.
I think Turturro remains the most talented person in the film while being the worst thing in it. It makes no sense.

I found him to be terrific and funny in "O' Brother Where Art Thou?".
he was even funny in "Mr. Deeds".
hell....I just love that guy.
I <3 Turturro.

I truly was one of the BIGGEST Transformers fan growing up, still a huge fan.
The movie was great and exactly what I expected (even funnier).
The fighting scenes were great, it had a solid stotyline and explained enough that even the novice fan can follow....
It's a movie about alien Robots ... don't expect the "Best Dramatic Screenplay" Oscar and and have a good time...

For a mindless, blow-em-up summer actioner, Transformers serves its purpose perfectly fine. Were there some cheesy parts? Yes. But for the type of movie it is, you want it to have cheesy moments and lame jokes. It's not something amazing or groundbreaking but it's definitely worth at least a matinee.

However, despite all the robots and the effects, the thing I was most pleased in was Sam's parents. Maybe I'm just tired of every married couple being bogged down in martial strife or having an absentee parent but, especially with this having Spielberg's hand in it, I was pleasantly surprised at Sam's parents (who acted remarkably like Leela's parents from Futurama). They were loving, they were nice to one another, they were nice to their son, they were kind of goofy without being overbearing. And that was just something that strangely struck with me.
One question about the ending though. How awkward would it be trying to perform having Optimus Prime watch you?

what about having to do it ON bumblebee I thought about that, and while I agree it is very creepy having sex on your friend, thinking about Optimus' eyes and imagining the voice saying 'It's ok, I like to watch' seems even weirder to me.

Never mind loving and understanding parents in a Hollywood movie - but loving and understanding parents in a SPIELBERG movie? Where the FATHER figure is present and dominant? Un-fucking-heard of.

Michael Bay DVDs always deliver the goods.
His commentary tracks are always revealing and interesting. TRANSFORMERS is no exception. He goes into great detail about budgets, concepts, fans, haters, lighting, effects, etc etc.

I finally got around to watching this movie today and it was fucking terrible. And I usually like shitty movies.
The acting was horrible, the dialog was worse, and the plot was nearly non-existent.
Not to mention that it was basically a 2 and a half hour commercial.
There were some good action scenes, but it was like maybe 20 minutes of the movie. I kept reading and hearing how the movie actually wasn't that bad, but this movie was awful. Shia LeBouf stinks.
