illegal bootlegs is probably redundent.....
but anyway.....theoretically and hypothetically, I know a lot of people who possibly maybe have a lot of first run movies on DVD.....I myself have done nothing illegal, but i'm just saying...

I would say shitty movies are Hollywood's bread and butter.
illegal bootlegs....end of movie industry?
In the 10 or so developing countries I've been to illegal bootlegs are an important tool in the Wurr on Turr. Everyone except the crazies loves American movies. Every kid has at least 5 WWF t-shirts. And it endears American culture to them. But if they didn't have bootlegs they'd have nothing at all. Sony and Miramax are never going to market their shit in Yemen, and where they do market to the developing world they want the same retail prices they charge in the West. In Maylasia, for example, legit movies are available at the airport and in the big fancy malls and they sell for about $25 a pop. So basically they've priced out everyone except the bankers, the oil executives and the generals who stole their millions from the poor (and from me).
And yet when I first went to the American embassy in Yemen's website before I could get to the consular page I had to go through these long informative pages first about how copyright infringement was evil and anti-freedom and how to turn people in for having bootleg movies and music. I just read in Malaysia that, under pressure from the US to stop piracy, they've trained sniffer dogs to find pirated DVDs. Not bombs or weapons, but pirated DVDs. In these cases we have given more effort to protect Sony and 20th Century Fox's profits (even though they're not even trying to sell products in Yemen) than we are to fighting terrorism.
Whoring for corporations before fighting terrorism. Who can expect anything less?

Not just shitty movies, but the fact that if I want to go to the theater with my girlfriend and and get a soda and some snacks, it ends up setting me back like 40 bucks, and its not worth it to even see a mediocre movie for that much. For the last 6 months I've been exclusively patronizing the second run theater near my house. Cheap movies, and decently priced food (and they actually serve you real food, not just candy and popcorn). Every Monday is their dollar movie night, and guess which night of the week I usually go.

Not to mention that you have to sit through regular commercials now instead of just trailers. Add to that the "Wild West" mentallity of the movie theaters with people talking, cell phones ringing, and the fact you are locked in for the whole movie (no bathroom, snack runs, etc.).
It just isn't worth going to the theater anymore.

Torrents are the way to go. There I said it too. Every year towards the end of the year you can download every movie that is being considered for Oscar as a DVD Screener and burn it or watch it on the computer. I see all the movies I want that way. AS Mad Matt wrote the wild west nature of theaters is what keeps me away.

I think once they find a way to bring new movies into peoples houses, and for a reasonable price, more people will watch legit movies.
i do not think piracy takes as much money from hollywood as they say it does. those numbers are way inflated. most of the people who watch bootleg movies would never have seen those movies in the 1st place, so it is a wash

When Hollywood estimates losses from piracy, they included all the countries that do not acknowledge our copyright laws, like China and other Asian countries, and that too is also over blown.

I'm not saying I've never bootlegged, but with the high price of movies and the annoying crowds, I would have waited for cable anyway. I wasn't going to spend money to see it, and I wasn't going to spend any money to see it 6 months to a year later anyway.

You trade off quality to watch films early. It really is a niche and will continue to be, it's driven by the waterhead thrill of watching a movie and feeling like you're being bad. Once you've seen one bootlegged videocamera cut you've seen enough.
Some of the DVD screeners that get leaked by the writers guild members are good quality but they're still not up to par. You're only getting 75% of the movie experience at best. Sound is downsampled and video sub par.

Just look at how much money Transformers is making, no Hollywood isn't going to have their own great depression. The people in Hollywood will continue to crank out shit bomb after shit bomb for your enjoyment.

But a lot of the movies that are coming out are garbage. What does it matter if the picture and sound isn't perfect? You check out the flick online/pirated/etc. just so you get to see it. If it is a GREAT flick you can make the jump to seeing a "high quality" version in the theater.
Otherwise, I am more than willing to trade off a little bit of picture quality to watch in the comfort of my own home. It's not about the "thrill" of thwarting the man; it's about being able to enjoy a movie and be comfortable.

DVD screeners are the only ones I can agree with you with when it comes to a bad movie. You are defiantly in a very small minority if you choose to watch even a bad movie recorded with a camcorder, having shadowy people waling in front of the screen, hearing popcorn being consumed, and worse of all mono sound comparable to a pocket taperecorder.
If you familiar with piracy, quality degrades on this scale:
Best
DVD Screener (5.1 sound)
R5 (stereo)
TC (stereo)
TS (mono)
CAM (taperecorder mic mono)
Worst
For 90% of people anything less than R5 is unwatchable. And DVD screeners and r5 usually only just appear before the movie is released on DVD, so it worth waiting for the DVD by then. Studios are getting more successful at preventing leaks lately.
With DVD revenue and the Box Office take Hollweird is raking in more than ever. When they complain bootlegging it hurting the box office it is not because of that but the fact that people have invested 2000-5000$ in a home theatre system so people tend to wait for the DVD to enjoy on the great system they invested in. Either way hollyweird gets their money.

Definitely. I just rent movies, rip them and copy them. My DSL company busted me downloading torrents and threatened to turn of my internet.

I have no moral qualms about buying / downloading bootlegs. And that goes for feature films, DVD releases and music. If I enjoyed the album / movie and want to support whoever is involved, I’ll go out and purchase the retail copy or see them in concert.
I believe a lot of people have this same mindset. With today’s ever lowering standards, consumers are less willing to open up their wallets for absolute garbage….and they can only blame themselves.
