Everyones opinion [or rather yesterday since its 2:15am now] they said that "todays music sucked" compared to older music. I'm 19 , I know what kids are listening to and shit. Not everyone feeds off the mainstream mtv shit (I guess everyone thinks its the "emo" thing) I've also noticed its not as big as it was when I was 16 so whatever's next is coming I guess. I like how everyone throws the word emo around , Ive learned that it can be defined just like any other genre. The music is lyrically sad obviously , the people that follow the fad are called scenesters ect ect. I am into Punk[Pennywise , Misfits/graves era , Bad Religion , Nofx ] , Ska [Mustard Plug , Op Ivy , Link 80 , Buck O nine , The Specials] and Hardcore[doubt anyone on these boards would know them] , I go to shows, the year of the bands ranges from 80's to now. I find classical rock , most metal , alternative and whatever else boring. The Scene of the genre's depend on the location , theres only about 3 places in suffolk long island that hold shows that I enjoy. All the older people that say that theyre music is better , well thats ignorance really because I'm sure that if the the teens like a same band someone who lived through the bands start would think "well they're not a true fan" so no matter what someone listens to , some group of people are gonna bash it. Musics not bad , its just where everyone thinks it is wrong. Just a thought of mine.

Angry, Fat_Sunny Is From The Older Generation And Is Attempting This Summer To Expose Himself To More Current Music. Surprisingly, Alot Of It He's Finding Extremely Appealing. A Month Ago, F_S Had Never Heard Of The Streets Or Spoon Or Apples In Stereo, Or Okkervill River Or Andrew Bird, But Now He Is A Fan Of All Of Them.

However, F_S Thinks You Will Find That The Music You Love Most Is The Music You Came To Maturity With...That Is, The Music That Was A Part Of Your Life From Ages Say 14 To 19. For Fat's Parents, That Is Jazz And Big Band. For F_S, It Is 60's Music. It Is The Associations With Those Years And The Fun And The "Growing" Experiences You Have At That Time, That Will Cement Your Relationship To That Music Forever.

If You Keep An Open Mind, You Will Always Be Able To Appreciate New Music. But The Stuff That Will Always Give You Goosebumps, Even Many Years Later, Is The Stuff You Grew Up With.

all i can say is don't fucking worry about what label people put on music. if you like it, listen to it. be it emo, hardcore, punk, pop, rap, etc.

listen to the music you are into yourself. i personally have a very eclectic musical taste but who fucking cares. if you like the music you listen to, tell all the fucking hosers to suck a big fat cock. get into what you like to listen to and don't worry about what other people "label" the music as.

if people tell me they don't like what i listen to, i tell them they are missing out and should have a more open mind. fuck people who think they know more about "music" than you. listen to what you want and fuck everybody else. they don't have to listen if they don't want to...

I think most people have a very selective memory about music from their “era”. There’s always been a lot of popular music out there that was crappy, but, you tend to forget about all of the crappy songs, because they don’t become “classics”. I’ll bet if you go back and look at the weekly Billboard charts from 1968 – 1972, it won’t just be filled with The Doors and The Stones and Otis Redding. There will be a lot of shitty music that everyone has long since forgotten.

There’s plenty of great new music around, you just have to make a little bit of an effort to look for it, like F_S is doing.

People really do judge each other harshly based on what kind of music they listen to. Just watch this:

I really like the Eagles.

The great thing about music is that not everyone likes the same kind.

Just think how boring life would be if we all liked the same music. If the world were like that, we would never have any NEW music.

There are people that grow up listening to certain kinds of music and stick with that for the rest of their lives. Never expanding their horizons by checking out new music, or even better, OLD music. I can honestly say that I probably have the most wide ranging taste in music out of people that I am close friends with. What's great about that is that I can recommend a certain band or artist to someone that I think they might enjoy, and see their reactions. Most of the time when I recommend music to Gvac, I get a response of "You really like this shit?" So I have given up on trying to get him interested in new music...Just look at his top friends list on his myspace page, and you'll understand why my efforts are futile.

Overall, I would have to say people are happy listening to music that they feel is comfortable. Americans love VANILLA...and most American's musical tastes are just that.

Would American Idol be as popular as it is without all the vanilla music out there?

I'll finish by listing some stuff that I enjoy...None of it being the Eagles.

Ryan Adams and the Cardinals
The Black Crowes
Wilco
Rose Hill Drive
Drive By Truckers
Brandi Carlile
My Morning Jacket
Rolling Stones
Soundgarden
Steely Dan
Rage Against the Machine
Primus
AC/DC

Life is full of choices...Don't settle for the same old crap.

today's music blows. on occasion, i will find something new that i really like.

being only 29, i went through the whole hair band 80's / grunge 90's / emo 2000's, and i have to say, every year it get progressivly worse and worse. how many times can you listen to the same recycled 4-chord progression for a song? zzzzzzzzz

there is some good stuff out there, but you gotta dig for it nowadays. thats why internet radio, such as, i dunno "the experience w/ don stugots" (sunday 5pm-8pm on thereisnoradio.com) is great- it gives lesser known bands with talent rather than the hacks that are being pushed by the corporate record labels.

weekapaug said it best- listen to what you like to hear and dont give a fcuk what anybody thinks.

i think ron said it best when he said that you always like the music that was popular when you were in highschool/college. you always go back to that time and remember fondly a bunch of music, that they generation before just hates.

Right now I'm into:

Interpol
Bloc Party
Dresden Dolls
Secret Machines
Trail of Dead
The Big Sleep
Slackstring
Don McCloskey
Lily Allen

This is all I've been listening to. I find bands I like and go to their my space page to see who their friends are. Thats how I found the Dresden Dolls, Slackstring and The Big Sleep.

Yeah, it's a generational thing. Going to high school in the mid-80's, I remember people who came of age in the 60's and 70's talking shit about "modern music".

Maybe that's a bad example.

this is the part i don't get, just like all the jersey freaks with their taylor ham (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=61679&highlight=meat). if indie music is so great, why wouldn't big corporations try to sign them to make money? it's delusional to think they wouldn't. you're saying they're trying to push crappier bands, for what...to make it harder for themselves? they like a challenge? if there's crappy music out there in the mainstream it's because that's what people like. be mad at the people if anything.

My advice is MAKE YOUR OWN SCENE - I live in Nassau County and my son is 18. Him and his friends were booking shows when they were 15-16. Especially if you like hardcore there is plenty going on - basement shows, all ages shows booked in crappy old bars. To me punk and hardcore are music to be experienced live; you listen to recorded music until another show comes around.

I don't like to hear a 'young' person say their favorite band is someone like the Clash, a band they'll never get a chance to see live, ever. I'm in my 40's and I recognize the names of every band you listed (except Buck O nine?). I'm glad you feel I won't know the hardcore bands because thats the way it should be - my parents were clueless about what I listened to. People your age should be looking for new bands just coming up that they can call their own .... its a lot more fun that way!
