I don't know why this bugs me so much, but it does and has ruined certain past enjoyments.
Take Tom Cruise for example. He is like the top dog when it comes to Scientology in the entertainment industry. Because of his beliefs and how over the top he has become, I can no longer fully enjoy anything he is in. I used to love Tom Cruise movies, but now I always think of him as the asshole who has lost his mind to a hack religion and I can't enjoy him anymore in whatever movie it is.
John Travolta isn't as bad to me since he isn't out there flaunting his nonsense as much, but I still think about it whever he's involved in something.
Do any of you feel this way or do you just separate the two?
On a side note, instead of creating another thread, I have another question. For the life of me I still cannot wrap my mind around the fact that so many of these people believe this Scientology crap. Do they actually believe this whole Xenu shit and how these aliens came to Earth on an airplane and blew up volcanos or do they feel that this is just stuff made up by the media to mock them and that they don't actually believe that nonsense? I just cannot fathom how anyone can believe that and that there are so many in entertainment that do.

Is it really any different than believing that an all powerful god sent his son down to live among humans, perform miracles, walk on water, die for our sins (like that makes any sense), and then come back to life only to float up into the air?
Not really.

To answer the last paragraph, they completely deny all the alien Xenu whatnot to new members. And they continue to reiterate this throughout the indoctrination process. Then once, they reach a very high level, they are confronted with the truths of Scientology, all the Xenu whatnot. It's at this point where Scientologists are pretty much in for life or quit because they can't handle the "truth."

So, I guess we can assume that Tom "Nutjob" Cruise does believe that shit as he is pretty high up from what I've heard. I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous to me and sure you can compare that to people believing in God and Jesus, but at least we aren't talking about coming to Earth in a DC-8 airplane and blowing up volcanos.

I've yet to see a single page describe the history of Scientology so well, and succinctly
The Week Magazine: Scientology [Full Article] (http://www.theweekmagazine.com/news/articles/news.aspx?ArticleID=591)
Some excerpts:
How did Scientology begin?
Not as a religion. In 1950, pulp writer L. Ron Hubbard published an essay on achieving perfect mental health in Astounding Science Fiction magazine. Dianetics, as he called his program, became one of the first pop-psychiatry fads. It teaches that every mental aberration—neurosis, compulsion, repression—and most common physical ailments are caused by subconscious mental images of past trauma.

How do you start a religion?
In more than 500,000 pages of writings, including books and lectures, Hubbard laid out a complex belief system that became the foundation for the Church of Scientology. Hubbard taught that humans are actually spiritual beings called “thetans,” which live for trillions of years through reincarnation...
About 75 million years ago, Hubbard told his followers, a galactic dictator named Xenu imprisoned billions of beings on the planet Teegeeack, later known as Earth. He then dropped hydrogen bombs on them and implanted them with sexual perversions, false religion, and other psychoses. Later, the contaminated “body thetans” escaped and attached themselves to other thetans, otherwise known as human beings. To reach the final stage of Scientology, one must telepathically contact the parasitic body thetans and persuade them to let go.

Jesus Christ, that's even more insane than the way I described it.

If you read the Joe Ezsterhas(sp) book, he mentions that in Hollywood, he's
fought with lawyers and agents and politicians, but the scientologists
are the one group he's afraid to fuck with. He says they run that town
like a mob and will crush anyone who stands in there way.
Like mormons.

What really freaks me out is, they actually have a Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre.

Can you imagine a Catholic Celebrity Centre, or Baptist, etc. etc?
