View Full Version : My fucking cat ran away
dereckfishboy

He's been gone a day now. He's an inside cat with almost no experience outside. The boy is at his grandma's, I have to figure out how to break the news to him. My daughter's first words were his name......
Anyone have a cat take off like that? Guy I just talked to said his house cat ran off and came home two weeks later.... is that common?
And yes, this thread is me trying to convince myself it'll be okay. I raised him since he was a little kitten. He's been with me through a half dozen moves, a divorce, several break-ups, and god know what else. Through the never ending shit-storm that is my life, I've watched love, family, and friends come and go. The last seven years, him and his brother have been the only constant.
My daughter is calling his name right now even.

When I was a kid my cat would get out every once in a while and he'd pop back up in a few days. Sometimes he'd been in a fight but nothing ever really bad. Once he gets hungry he'll make his way back.

Dereck, Make Sure You Call People In The Neighborhood And Ask Them To Keep Their Eyes Open. Also, "Walk" Every Square Foot Around Your House. F_S Once Had One Disappear For Two Days, And She Was Just Sitting In A Clump Of Trees Not 100 Feet From His House.
Once, When F_S Lived In A Rented Garage Apartment (The Landlord Called It A Carriage House) F_S Had An Indoor Cat That Got Out When Some Workmen Were Patching The Roof. F_S Looked Everywhere In The Neighborhood, And Even Placed A Classified Ad. Nothing.
17 Days Later And Fat Had Given Up All Hope And Was Napping On A Couch With The Windows Open And He Hears A Really Loud Meowing So He Goes To The Window And Looks Down And Their Is Sweat Pea. Damn, That Was A Happy Day!!! How He Found His Way Back...Who Knows?
So It Is Way Too Early To Freak Out. Just Keep Looking And Calling.

Thats a pretty shitty thing to happen. I'm not an animal guy but I hope he returns safe. I don't know what I would tell your son. I'd say lie but it will just be exposed sooner or later so I guess you gotta just break it to him.

we had one cat that got out and our upstairs neighbors found her in their apartment, cowering behind their radiator two days later. another time our boy cat pulled a screen out of a window and disappeared. my wife woke me up from a nyquil induce coma at like 1am to let me know he was missing. i looked out the window and could just barely see him one flight down on the fire escape (we lived on the 4th floor) since he was a black cat outside with no lights on. i then had to climb down the fire escape and get him and climb up clutching him to me. all while still in my nyquil stupor. fun times!
best of luck, hope ya find him.

I hope your kitty comes back, Dereck! He's probably just confused, being outside alone for the first time, hiding somewhere close by. Zerox his picture and make up some "Missing Cat" flyers and put them in your neighbors' doors. I lost a kitten once who wandered off but I put up flyers and a few days later someone called to say they had her and I got her back. Good luck.

Dereck... hang in there sweetie. My dads cat once ran off for 4 days and it was mid winter with a snow storm... but we went out every day and shook the bag of food and called for him. We also put up posters with his picture around the neighborhood... and got a few calls. You may want to go that route. The tips worked and we found him a few days later... shaken and hungry but alive and he was so happy to see us!
Good luck!

Sorry about your cat. Don't give up on it coming back just yet. Tell your kids the cat had to go stay with relatives or something for a few days so they don't get upset while you look for it.
Good luck.

Maybe you could leave his bed and toys outside with a dish of his favorite food and see if he shows up? Worth a shot. Maybe he's passing by but cant get back in, that'll give him a spot to hang.

Got a call from a neighbor saying that she saw him hiding under a car yesterday.... I have a feeling he's close, so I'm not giving up yet..... anyways, he had his wiener lopped off when he was two, so at least I know he ain't coming home with cat herpes.........

My cat used to run off into our woods behind the house every chance he could, and he always came back home. Our other cat is mostly an "outdoor" cat and definitely always finds her way back into the house for some food. I"m sure yours will be back before you know it.

My ex-girlfriend's cat ran out on us once......After hours of trying to corral the cat in the parking lot of our apartment, we just let it go....
2 days later (after sowing her wild oats, I would assume) the cat returned and came right back inside when called....
Cats are weird.......

sometimes they do come back...thats the theory anyway that they have a sense about where home is and they always come back so hopefully this will be the case with your cat

All I can say is this..
One of my cats ran away, but came back 10 days later.
I bet almost no one else on this entire board has had a chinchilla escape/run-away though.
Poor thing was in my dryer duct (we believe) for over 2 weeks. He came back out only to die 2 days later. It was something like 17 days without any proper food or water.

we once gave a cat away, wound up an elderly woman took her. the kids were small and the hair may have been affecting their breathing, you know how you worry as a new parent.
approx a year later we received a phonecall from the woman's granddaughter who asked if we wanted the cat back cause her mom had gotten ill. we took Mickey back and the kids turned out fine. we didn't realize they had kept our number so it was a nice surprise...

Sorry to hear about it Derek. I personally can't think of any nice way to tell the kids about this...so I guess that means the best thing is to just tell them straight up. As long as you're not a dick about it, which you ain't, that's all that can be done. Sometimes this is just part of growing up and she'll have to deal with some of it on her own. Just be sure to give the kid a hug when they get sad... and be understanding. That's all you can expect to do in this situation.

hopefully your cat comes back. not long after we moved in our house. our cat, who hasn't been outdoors, got out. i found him sitting on our front porch at 5:30 the next morning. as long as someone has seen him then i think everything will be ok. you might want to check any areas near by that cats hang out in or wooded areas.

I completely forgot this in my last post...
The night my chick moved into her new condo, she and I went out to see V for Vendetta and eat at some Bennigans. When we got back 4 hours later, we found the condo missing one of her cats, Taz. We soon surmised he ran out the door as we were going outside. My chick was sobbing while she searched for him... we split up and searched the neighborhood. No signs.
I gave up after searching for some time...thinking I'd never see Taz again. Got back to the condo, and saw my chick sitting in the car hugging Taz. When she came back, as it turns out, Taz was waiting at the door for her.
Cats can follow their own trail, picking it up with their nose. Very resourceful animals. If your kitty wants to come back home and can do so, I have no doubt it will. So there is reason to still have hope.

The neighbor boy told me before I left for work last night that his father and he had seen Daze in a ditch leading to a sewer pipe, which is envolped by a huge patch of thick reeds for him to hide in.... he described my cat to a tee, even things not visable in the posters I printed.... if the kid is correct, the little bastard was literaly just across the street from the house, not even thirty feet away..... only a few hours after my first post here....

Well, I didn't have to worry about it... his big-mouth grandmother blabbed it too him... first thing he asked when he popped in the car was "Did you find him yet?"....
He counted all the fliers with Daze's pictures on them on the ride home and then I gave him the new Megaman game, and he's more optomistic than anyone.... ah, to be as care-free and devoid of stress as children......

They will almost always come back. When I first moved in with Jeff, one of my cats got out, only a few days after I moved there. I was freaking out, we were searching the entire complex for the cat, and when we came back, he was sitting by the front door. I've also had one of my cats get out, disappear for a week, then show up at my front door.
Put stinky tuna out, you can also get a HaveAHeart trap and put the tuna in there, you might be able to trap him. I guarantee he is slinking around close to your house somewhere.

Sorry to hear. I hope not to be much of a downer with this post, but my experience with cats is that they slink away when they are sick, also they can get a little too curious sometimes and find themselves in scary places they don't feel comfortable coming out of, possibly chased into one. Do you have your cat microchipped or identified with a collar with your phone# on it? keep looking in the tight spots maybe even put some food out for it, good luck.

Since cats have very good hearing and smell, you and your family should hang out out front talking in normal tones as much as possible. The cat should hear the familiar sounds and get itself oriented by the sound/smell combination and she should come back after she figures it out. She might be kind of overloaded with the new environment and cant sift you out of it enough to get a bead on you to figure out how to return.
