now there's a 4-alarm fire associated with it and debris falling from some buildings. 1 person reported injured so far.
melly: i think it's a promotional tie-in to the movie.

I've heard gas line fire
I've heard transformer explosion
I've heard building collapse.
I guess we have to wait for the media to calm down, take a xanax and give us the right story.
I wonder what Jill Nicolini is wearing?

ny1.com says that it's a transformer on the East Side (Lex and 42nd), and that 4,5,6 service has been disrupted.

soot, dirt and mud rainin' down on the businessmen's suits. sounds like some chocolate rain.

my first post mention people running around going crazy (effectively panicking) and that was from cbs-2.

I like the steam cloud going up into the air. Looks like the locals could get some free drycleaning.

That shot that they keep showing with the school bus, with the geyser behind it, is the kind of shot that news editors wet themselves over. The only thing that could be better for them is if there were kids trapped inside with lava slowly heading their way.

hah, on the feed I'm watching, they actually said something like AND YOULL SEE THE SCHOOLBUS, I WONDER WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CHILDREN and WE UNDERSTAND THESE IMAGES ARE DISTURBING AND MAY REMIND YOU OF 9/11
Then they started speculating about what type of injures people could have (burns, etc.)

stuff like you're saying is what makes me hate the media. I heard the "dramatic speculation" a few weeks ago with a woman who got hit by a car and killed and the reporter was speculating about what "may have" happened
it's fucking sickening...

i was using high pressure steam through a 1/4 inch pipe to heat up water in a 5 gallon bucket to help rinse it out because it originally had glue in it. i was in a rush and I placed the pipe in the water and let go of it(like an idiot) the pipe came flying out and burned/cooked a few layers of skin off the inside of my upper thigh
it was quitting time and as i was waiting on line to punch out I started getting a little woozy...

It now looks like 1 person was killed. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070719/ap_on_re_us/manhattan_explosion) This looks like it's one of those "out of the blue" things that can kill ya when you least expect it. Keep your eyes open and your head on a swivel all you NY buddays.

How many people said 9/11 after the explosion?
Nationally, (I can't get the local NYC news)
Yahoo News
Fox News Channel
MSNBC
Google News
I'm sure there are more. Anyone else want to help out?
The NYT online was best at handling the "terrorist" angle. They of course mentioned that since it was an explosion, the first few minutes people thought it could have been terrorists until officials got there and figured out what it was.

that's pretty much what all the local outlets here were saying. they were also reporting the folks working there who got caught up in this were bringing up 9/11, themselves. all of that is perfectly understandable. heck, when the blackout hit a few years back that's what everyone was wondering aboot.

I really have to start carrying a camera.
I was just leaving work when it happened. Being in Times Square, I didn't hear the explosion, but I did see a crowd of people running down 42nd St. A few screaming, some crying. The steam was rising like a volcano. That's what it looked like and that exactly what the Post has on it's cover today: Midtown Volcano!
An 82 year old steam pipe. Years ago the same thing happened in Grammercy Park, killing about 3 people I think. And I see those steam pipes all over the place. There's one right outside my building. Oh well, what a town!
