Would you let an underling yell at you if you made a mistake that fucked that underling over?

I make it a habit to never let one of my employees do that to me. A good example, I had an incident a few months ago where one of my reps was furious with me, he started yelling loudly, I took him into another room away from the othe reps and after letting him calm down I let him vent his frustrations to me.
I do believe in letting the person have their moment to say what they want, even if it's to complain about me, but I won't tolerate them disrupting the office to do it.

I'd explain to the employee that you work as a team. No yelling or screaming should be tolerated at any level. If he cannot work or accept the consequences of a potential team failure, then he will no longer be part of that team.

that sounds about right to me. Hopefully you're not talking about a boss who publicly berates his/her direct reports because that even worse that the situation you posit.
Given your premise, I think the best move for the boss is to apologize publicly to the underling for the mistake, try to rectify it behind the scenes, and make it clear to the work group that respect for each other in the work place is mandatory (ie. no yelling, venting, etc. at any level).

No. I would have to count to like 1000 so I wouldn't break their jaw or something.

Take them aside, let them have their say, and make it known in no uncertain terms, that it was unacceptable to make a scene...
Ive been lucky so far, im a generally liked boss in my place, plus the threat of outsourcing looming over really helps keep the troops in line...

drjoek is the only sane one in the bunch. The rest of you are soft and will be walked all over. I suppose everyone else is against spanking kids and feels raising your voice at children is emotionally scarring.
Fire the bastards! you can always find more.

Dark Hippie Said That HE Made The Mistake That "Fucked The Employee Over".
If F_S Were The Employee That Got Fucked, He'd Go To Dark Hippie's Boss And Say "This Dark Hippie Idiot Made A Mistake That Fucked Me Over And He Should Be Fired! I Can Do A Better Job Than Dark Hippie, And I Won't Make Mistakes That Fuck People Over. Fire Him And Promote Me!"
