I'm traveling for business about 3 hours from my home. In the hotel room is a local magazine that has fluff stories about the local scene, charity parties, etc. In the articles they have multiple pictures of people attending the events (l to r Mr. and Mrs. Blah Blah, Mr. Blah..). In one of the pictures, the caption reads Mr. and Mrs. John Smith (not real names). The picture is of my neighbor and best friend John Smith but the Mrs. is not John Smith's wife.

These people are the best friends collectively of my wife and I. We vacation together, hang at each others houses multiple days a week, our kids are great friends and play together endlessly (the two oldest went to camp together). In short, they are our closest non-family people in our lives.

I know John travels to the area regularly (we get together there when we are both there at the same time). It is not inconceivable that he was at this event and a picture was taken and mis-captioned and it would be one big joke. I don't know whether to confront him (if it is true this is seriously fucked up), I don't feel like I can tell my wife (and I share damn near everything with her). I thought is to ignore and move on but it has me fucked up. I don't think this is about me, it's him.

Any thoughts?

Just mention to him that you saw his picture in the magazine and watch his response.

I'm meeting him for lunch today and will bring it up. Seems like it has to be a mistake but crazier shit has happened.

I think someone took a picture of your friend, then mislabeled it in the magazine.

And he certainly wouldn't give his name to the photographer.

Yeah this definitely sounds more like a typo than anything.

You are looking at this the wrong way- as long as you are coming to the area regularly, what you need to do is ask if she has a friend. (wink, wink)

I've watched enough Dateline murder shows to know that it does happen.

The guy just stopped by my office. I told him about the magazine and showed him the picture. He said it was a party that he went to as a representative of his company. The woman is someone he knows from the area and he doesn't hang around with her anymore. He said is was a mix up in the magazine laughed it off and took off. He called me 5 minutes later and said it would be better if I kept this quiet. Nothing happened but didn't want to start unneeded shit. I told him the issue is dead. This fucking SUCKS!

Dougie Brootal

why does it suck? he told you nothing happened, i would take him at his word.

I guess I will. I don't entirely believe him. He didn't react like nothing happened. Oh well...

i wouldnt really worry about it. its not like you can dig it up and make him tell you. that would be a little "jezo" of you, if ya know what i mean.

Well of course you realize this means you have to go. I'm sorry, but there's nothing we can do about it. You're a problem and you have to go.

Scan the picture of the couple and post it so we can see.

He's been busted and he just made it worse for himself by calling you and telling you to keep it quiet, that then and there was the confession. What a tool. You could be the Amber Frey of this Laci and Scott Peterson story!

he may have fucked her a few times but the mrs john smith caption is most likely an unfortunate error...

And he certainly wouldn't give his name to the photographer.

Maybe thats an even stranger movie like coincidence. He didn't give a name but the person just used John Smith and they were right without knowing it...

i would just destroy the mag and let it die.

again, not worth runnnnnnnning a friendship.

and he could be right- it may just be a simple error, but why start uneccessary shit?

could just be a wrong place / wrong time situation.

i was at a bachellor party and the bachellor got all fucked up and did shit that he really shouldnt have.
as the entetaintment was walking around, i declined (being a happily married man).

well, he felt guilty and spilled the beans to his fiance. first person she called was my wife.
well, even though i had no part of it, just being there made me guilty.

he could have just let this die and no harm/no foul, but no..

again, just destroy the mag and move on.

threw the mag in the trash this morning. They both came over for cocktails last night. It was a little strange at first. I pulled him to the side and said the issue was dead, I take him at his word...done. I appreciate all of the advise/help...

You should've left the magazine open on the table while they were there.

If nobody noticed you could then throw it away.

Your conscience would be safe because while you did not say anything directly you left the " evidence " in open view.

Definetly a wierd situation but no harm no foul.

Oh and he owes you one. He doesn't know you shit-canned the magazine so if you ever need anything I'd bring it up again.

Wait so what did he mean by dead? Do you think he killed the girl? You better watch out.

Sometimes it is definitely better to keep yer damn mouth shut and move on.
Especially in this and the above situation...

Sure you feel bad.... maybe your morals are being challenged... but is it worth roooning lives over? Most times no. It happened, it was a mistake, deal with it and refocus on what is important.

No one is ruining (or roooning) a life. I do think he made a mistake and it is not my position to judge. Just a shock to the system...but he is my friend and as Ronnie has said, "in for a penny, in for a pound".
