i think the original batman was trying way to hard to be like a cartoon... where as batman begins had the grit and darkness you want from batman... a realistic feel... and using Ra's al Ghul as a vilian ... priceless

The original Batman was trying extra hard to NOT be a cartoon. At that point, the general public's idea of Batman was the '60s series, which was really cartoonish.

However, with Batman, Burton was trying to show the darkness and pychotic world of Batman ala The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One. It was supposed to be the anti-'60s Batman.

And as much as I like Tim Burton's work, he is a lot better at developing Villains than he is Heroes. Burton virtually made Batman a side character in his own movies while the villains were incredibly well developed.
