So you haven't gotten to first base yet?
You should try it one of these days.

When I was in high school, I studied Spanish. It helps somewhat in daily life in the city. When I went to college, I think I must have been high or something, but I studied gaelic. The only person I know that can speak Gaelic is my grandfather and he's dead-go figure!!!

Hi Nellie,
Is Italian a "romance" language? If so, French will come to you naturally. My friend's mom's first language is Italian. When she was in France, she spoke Italian and was understood more often than when she spoke English!)
If you want a real challenge, try Russian! You have a completely different alphabet (the easiest part to learn) and the whole business of "declensions!" UGH!

In terms of usefulness, it certainly pays to take Spanish.
The only words you need learn if you move to France are how to say "retreat" and "surrender."

French is pretty easy to learn, its difficult to get the accent down though once you've started with a language like Italian or Spanish. However the French/Italian combo makes it very easy to read and speak Portuguese.
O'Doyle Rules!
You should try renting some Italian Films (Bicycle Thief would be a good one). Or better yet, why not go to a good Italian Opera at the Met (La Boheme is an excellent first Opera for anyone) You don't realize how beautiful the language is until it's sung in all its glory. Giacomo Puccini wrote amazing music for the Italian language , as well as Guiseppe Verdi, etc..
I've sung opera in both languages, professionally, and I would gladly sing Italian over French.
