Have you ever been to any odd landmark, tourist spot, or roadside attraction?

I've been to the (purportedly) world's smallest Taco Bell in Lake Tahoe, CA and seen the world's smallest police station (it's a phone booth) in Carabelle, FL.

Impressive? No. Weird? Perhaps.

Just down the road from me... (http://www.dinosaurland.com/)

Joseph Geraci built Dinosaur Land in the mid-1960s, when the land was a barren expanse at the highway crossroads of US 522 and 340. The property is now overgrown with tall pines, and many of the fiberglass giants are obscured in the shadows of a "prehistoric rainforest."

There has been some recent minor vandalism, including the theft of King Kong's biplane. The replacement is smaller and doesn't look quite right -- Joann admits that they "couldn't remember exactly what the old one looked like."

It's in Mitchell, South Dakota.....and it's a palace..... a palace made of corn..

http://www.mediasd.com/gallery/tiffs/000126.jpg

Don't know why exactly we veered off course to see this place on our cross country roadtrip.... It seemed like a great idea at the time.... but once we got there I kept thinking, "What the hell am I doing here ....in this....corn palace...??" Sometimes ya get sucked into such detours after days and days driving I guess.... I'll tell ya, my real favorite fun fact about the Corn Palace is that on the way there we drove past a gas station and convenience store called, "Kum and Go."

Of THAT I made sure to take a photo.... Show the grandkids one day....

It is not much bigger than a garage, but you can go into it and it has a gift shop inside it.

In all my trips up and down I-95, I think I've only stopped there once. Tremendous willpower. Then again, I do need an "I Slept with Pedro" t-shirt.

Pedro sez, "I never SAUSAGE a place!"
.... and then there's a big cartoon sausage up there on the billboard..... That's my favorite!

The Big Duck in Flanders, Long Island

Beat me to it.

My Story

My family has had a cottage in the Hamptons for 60 years and growing up before the LIE 495 was completed the only way to traverse the length of Long Island was in the old Country Squire Wagon, AM radio tuned to newsradio 88(traffic and weather on the 8s) and no air conditioner, vinyl seats with 4 kids was to take Route 24 end to end on LI. We knew we were getting close to the house when we would anticipate and finally see the Big Duck. I hold a special place in my heart for the big Duck.
Took my kids to see it off the LIE in the fully individual climate controlled, full leather Honda Pilot, with sattelite radio and navigation system each kid with ipod and cell phone at the ready.
"Look kids its the Big Duck"
"Whatever Dad, Can we just get to the house already I want to go swim"

I guess we're building our own family memories and traditions

Damn, Dr. Joe....Lucky You!!!!

For Some Reason, F_S Had It In His Mind That You Were From Tennessee. Do You Actually Live In NY?? Maybe The "Out Of The Trailer" Comment Gave F_S That Idea???

Anyway, The Fact That These Landmarks Exist At All Makes F_S Proud That He Lives In Such A Goofy Country With A Sense Of Humor And Marketing Genius And Creative Individual Expression. Although Some Think They Represent The Worst Of America, F_S Thinks They Signify All That Is Good!!!

Stole the location quote from Kid Rock The doc is from CT. My Grandfather built the little cottage with his NYPD Irish cop money and it still in the family share it with my brother. Don't get to spend enough time at it.

There's always the giant peach in Gaffney, SC.

If you ever have a reason to drive through Metropolis, IL, you'll find enough strange things to keep you busy for....well....minutes. There's a big Superman statue (they've adopted Superman cause they're Metropolis--get it?), a kinda big rock painted green to look like kryptonite, and a HUGE statue in front of the Big John supermarket of, you guessed it, Big John. I have pictures of all these things, but I'm in the pictures and I look goofy.

It used to be open to the public. A few years ago it was purchased as a personal residence. The guy who owns it also owns about half of the property in town, a bunch of property in Tennessee (or something like that) and two homes in the Hamptons.

It overlooks a warm springs park with another tourist attraction. George Washington's bathtub.

Here's me and "Big John" that's all you get, the others are even less flattering. Look! It was late and cold and we were bored and being silly and it was raining and my pants were too baggy and I was wearing my sister's huge sweater and...and...and....oh forget it.
