this morning i had to wait on a slight line at the A&P.
there was a gentleman with one arm loading groceries from his cart onto the belt.
some lil punk behind him was huffing and puffing about how slow the guy was loading the groceries.

before my son was born, i would have have called this little bitch out. i'm at a different place in my life now.

anyways, i was thinking about it the whole ride to work.
now that im at work, im trying to do everything using only one arm. i'm even giving myself the benefit of it being my dominate hand (im a righty).

its been 2 hours now, and its been hell.
i feel so bad for that poor guy. i cant imagine how he gets through his day.

Wow, it is heartening to hear that people still have empathy for the suffering of others.

Great experiment Mike. Walking a mile in someone else's moccasins is the best way to deepen understanding of the other people with whom we share this planet.

I hope attitudes like that of the prick punk douche in front of you are on the decline.

Also, a question: what was the "sad thought?" The one-armed man or the impatient kid?

It is lamentable that the man has to go through life with only one arm, but he appears to be coping.

I find it more saddening that some people have no ability to have patience and compassion for those with different physical, emotional, educational, psychological, or other limitations.

well, its after lunch now.
i cant tell you how hard its been to post here only typing with one hand.
(today its slow at work, and the bosses are out, so i've literally done nothing but surf all day.)

i enjoyed a delicious cheeseburger with one hand, which was extremely difficult, and i even used the toilet with one hand. (in the interest of time i had to cheat to use both hands so i could pull my pants up and button/belt.)

my goal is to go to sleep tonite living what could be a typical day in that poor guys life.

sure, i sound like a dork, but its my day and i'll live it how i want to.

This world could use a lot more "dorks" like you Mike. Thanks for the reality check.

i would have gone off on that prick kid. it INFURIATES me when people disrespect people with handicaps. i can't imagine what it would be like to go through life with any type of handicap and i try to go out of my way to help people like this when i have the chance.

Yeah, F_S Would Have Blown His Top Too....But Waited Till He Was Out Of The Store And Confronted The Kid Alone, So As Not To Embarass The One-Armed Guy. Prick Kid Is Right!!

Nicely Done Topic And Experiment, Topless_Mike.

Very commendable. I might have shot a dirty, "hold your horses" type, look at the punk kid. But lets keep in mind how amputees adapt remarkably to their plight. This guy can probably tie his shoelaces in 5 seconds like the rest of us. Maybe not, but depending on how long he's had 1 arm, he has probably gotten better at daily tasks. No question its tougher for you to try it than him (minus the bathroom cheat) .

great little expirement. That punk kid is just a little immature prick, that prob needs to learn some hard life lessons, and just grow up. Im sure we were all there once.

I think I might kinda still be there.

Stop tring to relate with the one armed guy. He doesn't need your pitty or self richious simulations of what it is like to be him. He is the exception.
I have 4 handicap accessable parks in my neighborhood and I have yet yet to see a single criple enjoy one of them. Just like the over abundant handicap spots at the stoe. Not necessary.
They learn to deal just like you do. No good person craves pitty, so just stop.

The "Pity" For The One-Armed Guy Is Secondary To The Being Appalled At The Bad Behavior Of The Punk. Assume That Topless_Mike Had Talked About The Selfish Little Prick Hurrying-Up A 90 Year Old Woman Instead Of The One-Armed Guy...The Outrage At The Bad Behavior Would Be The Same.

That's weird. I've done the one armed thing before, too. I've done the blind thing too, but only in my own house.

You're a good man, Mike.

When I was younger I used to always want to spen a week in a wheelchair. Not using my legs for everything. I thought it would be itneresting to see how difficult it would be for me to cope with that.

Then I got diagnosed with ms and the aspect of life in a wheelchair suddenly went from a interesting look at life, to a real possibility. Needless to say I haven't thought about using a chair to see how it is since.

Ax is right as far as the dealing with it part. The difference between your one day test and this guy's life is that the fact that he only has one arm to use is something he cannot avoid for every day of the rest of his life. As a human being, he is an adaptable creature, and chances are if he's only had one arm for a pretty good amount of time, he's able to do things using the resources that he has come accustomed to that you wouldn't be able to do in your one day experiment.

That's just how it works. A guy who has been one-armed for 10 years, unless he completely gave up on himself, can eat a cheeseburger with one arm just as easy as I can with two, and much better than we can with one.

The sadness here belongs with people like that kid, and in this case can turn to anger.
Interesting experiment Mike.
