Board Gossip: An Under-Utilized Asset?

F_S Has Been Thinking About The Show Alot Lately. Maybe Because It Is Summer And There Is More Time Think. Maybe Because It Is Because Ron & Fez Is Like A Linus Security Blanket When Things Are Stormy. Who Knows. Anyway, Like Everyone Here, F_S Adores The Show, And Wants It To Be The Best It Can Be.

Thesis: The "Board Gossip" Segment Was A Stroke Of Genius That Is Not Being Utilized To Its Full Potential.

Disclaimer: This Is In No Way Intended As A Dig Against ESD Or Anyone Else. ESD Is An F_S Favorite, 2nd Only To Fez. So Please, Take This As Constructive. F_S Just Wants To Be Helpful. Seriously.

So, To The Meat Of It: The Idea Of Board Gossip Is Brilliant, But It Is Not Being Executed Properly. The Concept Of Integrating The Internet Chat Sites Into A Radio Show Is Pure Genius, And The Show Should Get Huge Kudos For The Many Ways They Do This. But Board Gossip Could Be Structured In Such A Way As To Make It Even Better For The Show, And For The Boards. The Key Word Is: Inclusion.

Fat's Not Sure ESD And The Show Realize How Much The Listeners To The Show (Who Also Follow The Boards) Look Forward To Board Gossip, And To The Small Chance They Might Be Mentioned. F_S Thinks That If The Show Were To Increase The Chances That A Listener Might Be Mentioned, That That Would Serve To Increase Listenership AND Participation On The Boards; A Win-Win For Everyone.

So, If F_S Were The Producer, Here Is What He Would Do:

1. Appoint A Rep On Each Board To Be The Gossip-Monger. This Person Would Be Secret, And Would Be Responsible For Not Only Following The Board, But For Actually Writing The Board Gossip For That Site, In A Manner That Only An Insider Could. Each Board Would Then Forward Its Weekly Segment To ESD, Who Would Only Have To Edit.

2. A Person Mentioned In Board Gossip Could Only Be Mentioned Once, Unless There Were Extenuating Circumstances. The Idea Would Be To Broaden The Gossip To As Many People As Possible. No More HTG Every Week (Not That She Isn't Wonderful...It Is Just That It Doesn't Serve The Show To Do That Every Week).

3. Gossip Would Have To Be Real/True, And Not Contrived: That Is, Each Board's Gossip-Monger Would Have To Weed Out Gossip That Was Actually Self-Conscious Grand-Standing, And Aim For Those Funny Little Battles And Flirtations (Like Stupid Girllll And Eli Snow's Passionate Flirtation In The "Adding An X To The Person Below You" Last Week). There Is Plenty Of Fodder For A Hilarious Board Gossip!

So F_S Has Written Way Too Much, But Here Is The Bottom Line: Show: Take Board Gossip Very Seriously, And Don't Treat It As An Afterthought. If People Think There Is A Chance They Will Be Mentioned, Then More People Will Tune In. And That Is Good For The Show. Equally, It Would Encourage People To Participate On The Boards More...And That Is Good For The Boards, And Therefore Also For The Show.

F_S; I agree that board-gossip was a neat integration of the message-boards into the show....and i do enjoy hearing names i recognize, even message board stuff i know about etc.

I'm an ESD fan as well, but i agree with the often posted opinion that hearing the same old names ( for no particularly interesting or funny reason) has made it a stale bit.

Maybe some changes, like your suggestion of bringing in more people from the various boards, would rejuvenate the segment......but i wonder at what point does that turn into just covering routine goings on at the boards (which i assume are a small fraction of the listening audience anyways) and meaningless shout-outs.

Having a large and constantly new roster of fan "characters" might become less compelling.....maybe ESD does need to bring in some new names, but i think focussing on a few people for better reasons might help even more.

As I often do I agree with F_S about how great a thing Board gossip is and I too look forward to it each week. I don't want to turn negative here but the problem is that ESD gets a little lazy with it as he does with most of his bits. He starts out gangbusters with them, then kind of mails them in after a while,stops doing the voice etc There is a thread somewhere with a conversation with Mikeyboy where he called a couple of minutes before the show asked for a couple of names and told Mikeyboy he would make it all up anyway . I fear the same will happen with Guy Guyerson if someone doesn't light a fire under that member of the staff.

Look at the prep Bronx Johnny puts into Sextravaganza there is no drop off in those bits. ESD seems to be taking his foot off the gas a bit

I agree that engaging the message boards is a great idea and I think you couldn't find a show more in touch with its message boards than the buddays Just look at how many there are and how many events revolve around them.

Old Friends, Who Could It Be?, According To Melinda and bring back Dawn of Correction. That was a great segment that should reoccur. Stop trying to cram all these obscure songs in for punchlines to bad jokes about people that nobody knows. Its killing the bit. Real gossip magazines focus on stars, focus on the stars. Board Gossip needs to be about the Brad Pitts and Britneys of the internet, not the Mark Linn-Bakers and the Rue McClanahans.

AS for Board Gossip like some of the other bits it needs to be rested to stay fresh. Fezzatorials and Catty Moments are/were better when they were unexpected. Plus its a little stale. Some people like it to be the same 5 gimmicks HTG Melinda. Ohters are sick of hearing about Paltalk (Yawn).
Give it a rest for a while. We are getting more than enough of the redheaded hyenia lately as it is without the extra bits

I'm not saying that everyone strives to be mentioned on the show. I'm saying the general tone of his post was bitter. Ron and Fez have ALWAYS focused alot on the listeners, even in back in WNEW days when it was only ronfez.net and it was smaller site than it is now. I think if he's calling the listeners/posters nobodies I don't think he really gets the show. Ron and Fez have always had respect for the people who follow the show and I highly doubt they would consider even one fan whether they post or not a "nobody". If you wanna hear celebrity gossip go to perezhilton.com . For godsake it's only 10 minutes once a week.

Becuase its like the part on ROMPER ROOM where the lady would say "I see Danny, and Megan, and Bart, and...." when she was looking through the magnifying glass on the tv. You know you all sat there hoping to hear your name called out. I remember when they said my name one time I about woke my parents up yelling "They said my name!".... Its basically the same thing.
