I was going to start this thread and im kinda pissed I was beat to it, but here's what I was gonna say. I think Dave has a point here, why not cycle people out? A little change could be good for this board. Since a lot of members of the show feel like we're losing some great board members maybe it's time for us to adapt. Darwinism at its best here, either we adapt or we face extinction.

people arent leaving the board or going through this hate time because of moderation I honestly believe its because A LOT of members lately are joke whoring. what i mean is the constant derailing of threads. The thing is that I think Dave was talking about "celebrity mods" -- i.e. making a people mods because they are known on the show or are high profile on message boards. Jon and I don't agree with this, and we don't think it actually works to bring in traffic. First and foremost, we feel our mods need to be active on the site and we think they need to be good at moderating the board. (Full disclosure: yes we do have Paul O, J-Dubs, CT and Jivin as moderators, but they are only mods of the forums devoted to their shows/interests, and that was, more an attempt to expand the site than anything else). STI has adopted a different position on this, and it's certainly their right to do do. Honestly, do you think about who the mods are on a board when you decide to post there? It's the overall tone and quality of the core membership itself that makes a person decide that they want to post on your site.

People leave and go to a new board all the time. That's a good thing. It means that they are more likely to find a place where they are most comfortable. The thing is that we've had some high profile members go elsewhere, so it seems like we're hemmorhaging members. I think we are in a transition phase though, so we will continue to change.

I enjoy this site,admittedly I waited almost a year after joining to post..just so I could get the feel of what's happening.Being from AZ. I have to say I somewhat miss out on some of the inside shiite.I DO enjoy real topical discussions,also I admit to the ocassional "derailment" of threadology.I don't however find this board to be as mean-spirited or just plain personally abusive as a lot of what I've seen on similar sites.for me personally,I think everyone I've interphaced with has been more than helpful,decent(add yer own positive adjective here) I very much appreciate the even-keeled treatment I've received by the mods,admins & other members of RF.Net. I have always been a little put off by those who really don't have a vested interest in things anymore still offering ways for you to do a better job at what you are doing. Threads are started by individual members and similar to the 'free market economy' you can choose where and what to post based upon what areas/threads interest you. Pretty simple.

I think people get pissed at the mods when they feel their point gets shit on. they need someone to take it out on. i have been called out a few times in my short tenure as a mod by people who thought i was picking on them or invalidating their point. I think all of the mods just try and keep the topics from getting personal. really when you look at what is posted here, no mods are trying to take away from your creative freedom or ability to post whatever you want about the show, positive or negative. but at the same time, we can not have threads that after 10 posts go into name calling and personal attacks.

i think it is easy for the newer sites to have less mod problems for a few reasons, one there are less members, and less posts. also the people who post at the smaller boards tend to know each other better. also, there are less strained relationships from past board drama's. we have some members on here for 6+ years who have LONG histories together. that in itself makes this board unique, and in my opinion, slightly more difficult to moderate without hurting feelings and making people think you are taking sides.

also, since we have been here so long, and a lot of our members get mentions on the show, the newbies come here and try to suck up to certain board members to get in their good graces, which in turn creates some problems.

all in all, i think the admins, mods, and forum mods do a great job. but i am biased, but i am also a mod, so fuck off.

The thing is that I think Dave was talking about "celebrity mods" -- i.e. making a people mods because they are known on the show or are high profile on message boards. Jon and I don't agree with this, and we don't think it actually works to bring in traffic. First and foremost, we feel our mods need to be active on the site and we think they need to be good at moderating the board. (Full disclosure: yes we do have Paul O, J-Dubs, CT and Jivin as moderators, but they are only mods of the forums devoted to their shows/interests, and that was, more an attempt to expand the site than anything else). STI has adopted a different position on this, and it's certainly their right to do do. Honestly, do you think about who the mods are on a board when you decide to post there? It's the overall tone and quality of the core membership itself that makes a person decide that they want to post on your site.

People leave and go to a new board all the time. That's a good thing. It means that they are more likely to find a place where they are most comfortable. The thing is that we've had some high profile members go elsewhere, so it seems like we're hemmorhaging members. I think we are in a transition phase though, so we will continue to change.

I agree 100% with the Sinner! Seriously people, this is THE board no matter how big the membership of the other boards become. O and A have always attracted a bigger audience and I love their show, but I'm with Jezo in that this board also isn't named after an Aids ref/joke or someone's sack. It quite simply the original and the classy board. Yet I don't think we need to police, change mods or become thread nazi's due to some rips on it. Sure I think we could use a mod or two with a different feel that an Alkey or Snoogans would bring, but that's my call and I don't run this place. I respect the job JJ, MB the current and past mods have done even when being banned. Like someone else here said it really is a thankless job and I don't envy some of the positions they get put in (sometimes by me!). But to say people are quitting bc the board is sarcastic, caustic or ball-busting isn't accurate either. No matter what your approach someone won't like it. Gvac didn't leave bc someone offended him! First off he's not a pussy or death metal moe. But you can't just assume that everyone here is like your circle of buddies at a bar. It's more like meeting a bunch of people you don't know or barely know and dealing with them that way. We're not telling people not to joke or have a good time or bust each other's balls, but you seem to value and prefer being able to insult and attack other people over any other form of discussion here. That type of interaction has never been the priority here and never will be.

And yes, to a degree, we are acting people to post "profesisonally" so as many people as possible feel welcome and will post or even just lurk here. I agree 100% with the Sinner! Seriously people, this is THE board no matter how big the membership of the other boards become. O and A have always attracted a bigger audience and I love their show, but I'm with Jezo in that this board also isn't named after an Aids ref/joke or someone's sack. It quite simply the original and the classy board. Yet I don't think we need to police, change mods or become thread nazi's due to some rips on it. Sure I think we could use a mod or two with a different feel that an Alkey or Snoogans would bring, but that's my call and I don't run this place. I respect the job JJ, MB the current and past mods have done even when being banned. Like someone else here said it really is a thankless job and I don't envy some of the positions they get put in (sometimes by me!). But to say people are quitting bc the board is sarcastic, caustic or ball-busting isn't accurate either. No matter what your approach someone won't like it. So my view is much like MB's in that if they leave, it wasn't for them. Barring personal threats or simple overt arrogant douche bag tactics, all should be allowed to post away. A mod shuffle or rules influx will never be the answer. Yet I still think I should be an anti-mod with only power over mods!!! :innocent: I'm looking at you Fallon you prick!
