View Full Version : Is Back To School More About College?

I might be wrong but I think I've noticed over the past few years that the Back To School commercials seem to have an exaggerated focus on people going to college. When I was younger (in the 90s) it seemed about elementary school or high school. But now so many of the commercials seem to be about people going to college for the first time.

Am I wrong about this (i.e. always had a large college base) or has a change been made?

No shit! I've noticed the ads are all about who can do the Triple Lindy!

It's all laptops and condom commercials these days!

With the technology required for college, it's a bigger money maker these days. You can't even get into most schools without a laptop.

What bums me out is the lack of communication from my kids school about needed supplies. If you go to Wal Mart, there will be these kiosks with fliers from all the local elementary schools with a complete list of needed supplies. My kid in High School and we never know what he needs until the first day of school. By then, they're out of almost everything. Last year, I couldn't even find any freaking loose leaf paper!

loose leaf

I don't know why, but for my years of living I have hated that term for paper.

"Hey, you got a extra piece of loose leaf?"

Go outside and get a leaf you hippie.

Can't help you there. That's what it's called. Otherwise, how do you differentiate between that and spiral bound?

The greatest Back to School commercial of all time is the Staples one where the dad in dancing through the store, grabbing supplies for his two moping kids, all to the tune of "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year." Anyone with kids can relate.

It's simple. So-called "loose leaf" is just paper. "Spiral bound" is in a notebook. You either have to get paper to put in a binder or a notebook which already has paper inside.

oh yeah. what happened with that interview you did a while ago? BTW, being out of school rocks and sucks at the same time. If you are considering a PHD get started now. I've put off grad school for so long that it is now very much backburner. Just sayin'.

someone else got the job. i actually just had another interview on wed. morning i thought went well. i knew the principal who was part of the committee that interviewed me and after said i did a great job with it. supposed to know by the end of next week, so im keeping my fingers crossed.

ive considered going back for a ph.d, but i am so fucking sick of school right now. ive been going non stop my entire life. just can't deal with it anymore. im thinking work for a few years, cause im broke as a joke and then possibly going back to school.

Dude, i went the work route and i am still poor. don't get me wrong, i'm not starving but a philosophy degree doesn't really set me up for any well-paying jobs. There are probably more opportunities where you are though. I'll cross my fingers for you on the current job. Hey, maybe Phish will get back together and we can get a van. It's a long life, enjoy.
