Being a history nerd, it's been hard not to notice that mankind is by and large stupider and stupider as you go back from the present day.
All of these "it was better when..." threads are made of rose-colored bullshit.

People like the good old days because they were young. Youth is good, people get old and miss the fun times. My good old days have just begun.

How about interesting historical examples of how stupid people used to be?
When ladies' nylon stockings were introduced, (as opposed to silk), informational campaigns had to be made to convince people that:
1. Although acetate was derived from coal, the stockings made from them would not leave coal streaks on your legs, and
2. They were not indestructible to knifes and nailfiles.

"The only thing good about the good 'ol days is they're gone." That was the title of my old history professor's book. It was basically a record of all the nasty horrible shit that gets forgotten as people piss and moan about the present and wax nostalgic about the past. If you look at just about any social statistics of 19th century - from crime to smog to poverty - shit was all worse back then. The electric lightbulb cut the rate of rapes and burglary in half simply because you could light up neighborhoods and catch people in the act. Television cut our birth rate in half simply because people had something to do in the evenings besides breed. We were fucking savages back then. Now we're clean, well-lit savages.

I think, to a certain extent, people's rememberance of the "good ole days" stems from their childhood and an ignorance of what was really happening. They remember being safe, and not having to worry about things they worry about now. The thing is that those things were there, they just weren't aware of them.
One instance was my wife thinking that "these days" things are as safe as they were in the '60's and '70s. I had to remind her that while we were afraid of terrorists then, there was a great fear of other things, like nuclear war. We also discussed how things like kidnapping or violence to children, was just as or more prevalent then, it's just taht it wasn't as publicized as it is now.

Our septic system in our condo is "so old" that we can't use the above product anymore. Take that for progress!

Oh, no wonder my nana's house was always cold, despite the copious masses of nylons she would throw on the fire. And that's probably also why I am brain damaged. Wait, no, that's right, I huff cheeze whiz.

I went out with the good old days once - we worked at the same restaurant - and I did NOT get my dick sucked.
I've got no moves. I need some moves.

I dunno, toys were much better in the 80's than they are now. I had a knight rider bicycle with machine guns on the side made of plastic. Show me something that beats that now.

Women dress sexier now then back then. They are into sex more then ever. The box is bald not a hairy forest. More ways to meet women then ever before. You dont have to wait forever to get laid. Lingerie. Some women are more aggressive then ever.
Things are better now then the good ol days. And Im just talking about sex! If you want to add computers, cars, racism and more, almost everything has gotten better. IMO I wish I was growing up with today rather then 15 years ago.

I asked him if he knew what time he had
He said he wasn’t sure, maybe a quarter past
The kids of today should defend themselves against the 70’s
I peered in his eyes as we stood in line just to have a look
But the pages I found looked like an unbound coloring book
The kids of today should defend themselves against the 70’s
The kids of today should defend themselves against the 70’s
It’s not reality, just someone else’s sentimentality...
It won’t work for you...
Baby boomers selling you rumors of their history
Forcing youth away from the truth of what’s real today
The kids of today should defend themselves against the 70’s
Stadium minds with stadium lies gotta make you laugh
Garbage vendors against true defenders of the craft
The kids of today should defend themselves against the 70’s
The kids of today should defend themselves against the 70’s
It’s not reality, just someone else’s sentimentality...
Look what it did to us...
(Speakin’ as a child of the 70’s)
The kids against the 70’s...
Kids against the 70’s...
The kids of today should defend themselves against the 70’s
