I got a fax on Friday for a job offer. the salary is more, the job is better all the way around. I have to give my notice but the boss at my current job is away till September 10th. I have no problem giving my notice with his partner but i wanted to use my vacation time as my last week this way i get the time i am owed.

My question is how do i go about this or do i just let the time go?

don't let the time go! believe me, i've been there. My suggestion is to let your boss's partner know that you are leaving and send an email to your boss outlining your plan to use up any vacation time before you leave.

Make sure that you thank them for the opportunity to work for them (even if you were miserable).

tough question. I dont know many companies willing to give you vacation after your notice. Do they have a clause where if you leave the company they will give you your vacaction pay via check instead? In that case give them two weeks notice and give your offer to the new company Three weeks. That way you can have a week for yourself.

well, since i am not on a project, i am just sitting in the office doing nothing till the next one would start which is sept 10th (if i wad staying) so if i take the 2nd week as a vacation week or sit in the office, they are paying me to do nothing either way. plus, the time is mine.

i gave my two weeks recently, even though i've been a good employee and i'm leaving on good terms, the boss said if i ever want to come back that i will have one and only one chance if i ever want to return, it seems almost like a threat, any opinions?

like if my new shit doesnt work out han i can return, but if i start looking for something that i think is better again, then i'd better hope that that its for keeps because THE POSITION IS FILLED (even if it isnt)

CJ, i love your words of wisdom. I had to send emails to the boss since one is on vacation. she is ignoring the email. i sent it, she read it but didnt open it. regardless, i also sent it to HR who called me promptly to say that the time is mine to use as i wish and good luck to me. Friday i will leave at the end of the day without as much as a good bye. no worries. bigger and better are waiting.

I'm in the process of looking for another job and I won't even put my current boss down as a reference. Its not going to go over well. My only saving grace is that I'm freelance so hopefully I can time this perfectly.

You realize that the Friday night TiNR gig doesn't pay right? It was all a joke.

If that's not a Henry Rollins reference, you can't afford it anymore.

If it is a Rollins reference... used or unused?

i've never heard of a company not paying out vacation time. they might want you work out the two weeks, but they'd still pay out the vacation time owed to you.
