... Because America sucks ass.

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33786

"The Prisoner is not happening. It's a very quintessentially British drama and there were too many creative differences trying to share it with an American partner. I didn't want to be responsible for taking something that is quintessentially British and adapting it in a way that I didn't feel was reflective of the way people would remember it and the way people would want it to be. So we called time on that."

Personally, I'm glad it's not taking place. The original was so great, so perfect, so unreplicatable. Something simultaneously of its time and beyond it. I wouldn't want to see them try to update it. And if you haven't seen the show, get thee to Netflix.

Be seeing you.

I think there are two episodes of the simpsons were they pay homage to The Prisoner. Cracks me up. And when I talk to people about it, they don't understand. I'm glad I asked for the complete boxset for christmas when I was 14.

The opening for the Prisoner is one of the best in da west.!!!

I thought the same thing about The Fugitive.

oh... and Wild Wild West.

I guess what I'm saying is... ya had a 50% chance of it being any good.

A: The Prisoner Remake

Q: What is a new number 2?

FWIW, even the British didn't get the Prisoner. It's some serious hardcore geek material, because it is just so out there, both in a metaphorical and existential sense.

Cool theme song though.

And also the Avengers.

I too am glad that they aren't remaking "The Prisoner" There is no way they could do it without
ruining the whole thing.

Plus I can't see where Will Smith would fit.

"What do you want?

Information.

You won't get it.

By hook or by crook, we will."

I loved the original so much, that I admit I like the idea of a contemporary re-make. But I KNOW i'd be disappointed with the end result.

One of my favorite lines (and there are many) comes from the final two-part epsiode. The young character that allies himself with Number 6 is running amok and causing some general chaos:

NUMBER 6: YOUNG MAN!

YOUTH: Yes Dad?

NUMBER 6: Don't knock yourself out.

Don't know why, but of all the brilliant dialogue in that series, that line seems to me to capture the character of John Drake. I mean Number 6! Yes, Number 6! I have no idea who this Drake person is! Just a typo!

maybe now they can get started on the remake of
"THAT GIRL"

If I were rich and could afford to decorate an apartment, I'd so get an egg chair. It would go perfectly with my motif of bland and generic furniture.

Apparently, the production company for the original series, ITV, has picked up the ball. According to an April 16th Daily Mail article:

"The Prisoner, which baffled millions of TV viewers in the 1960s with its complex plots, is being remade with U.S. actor Jim Caviezel in the title role. Currently filming in Libya, there’s a special guest appearance by the show’s original star Patrick McGoohan. And by luvvie’s luvvie Sir Ian ‘Serena’ McKellen."

Christopher "Dr. Who" Eccleston was originally supposed to be the new Number 6. But apparently, when ITV took over, they wanted an American actor. Now Jim Caviezel (yes, Jesus himself) is reportedly the guy.

IMDB lists "The Prisoner" as a project that's in pre-production, but doesn't give any details.

I heard Christopher Eccleston wasn't actually fired. One day he stormed in to the producer's office, tendered his resignation and then pounded his fist on the desk, breaking a nearby tea cup.

The current rumor is that it's going to be a six-part mini-series.

I agree though, if they try to turn this into three seasons with 17 episodes per season, this is going to SUUUUUCK!

IFC has been playing the original series each Friday this month. I had never seen it before, so I'm enjoying it. I'll give the remake on AMC a chance when that starts November 15th.

Anyone watch the first part of the mini-series? Not sure how I feel about it. Caviezel is no McGoohan. Seems a bit whiney.

I dvr'd it, but I'm not optimistic.

I think papers gave it B- review. As you said, McGoohan was a big part of the original, as well as the novelty of the idea. I will watch it however, and hope Ian McKellen makes this miniseries.

I thought it was poorly edited and boring. The scenes with Ian Magellan were good - but there really wasn't much mystery to it. It was as bland as the desert it takes place in.
