I just received a tax bill from the NJ Dept of Treasury Division of taxation. They said I owe $192 for taxes on cigarettes that I ordered online in 2005 and early 2006. I bought a total of 7 cartons of no name brand cigs over the course of 1 1/2 years. Thats fucking ridiculous. thats like $28 in tax per carton. How could this be allowed? If you buy something from ebay or buy.com or amazon.com you dont pay tax unless your from that state. Are we all going to get tax bills 2 years from now for internet purchases? I hope not and think that wont happen, so why are they allowed to do it with cigarettes?
I dont even smoke anymore, Thank God but this just doesnt seem right. To tax someone almost 2 years after they purchased something. Another thing is I was never told that we would have to pay taxes at a later date. I thought I was paying so little because they were no name cigs and because they were sold on a reservation.
So 7 cartons of cigs cost me a Total of $94 and now I have to pay $192 more in taxes. My total for no named cigs now becomes $286 or $40 a carton.

wow that is insane. where did you order them from? i remember reading that this was going to start happening to people who bought cigs online due to some law about tabaco crossing state borders or something

im pretty sure this is exactly what it is. people get busted in this area once in a while for buying cigarettes on indian reservations and crossing state lines for resale. im sure the loop hole in the tax is because it crosses state boundaries. i wonder why it took two years for nj to tax you on them. did they just pass a new law with retroactive dates or something?

Smartsmoker.com obviously not smart!
I just called them and had an argument about this. I said you should atleast say something about this on your site. Something like if your out of state you may have to pay taxes because we report our information to every state. I would never have purchased no named cigarettes if I knew that would still have cost the same price as if I bought my favorite brand in the store up the street.
BTW they send you a list of exactly what you bought and when.

My mother said she heard someone on the radio a couple of weeks ago call up and say they received a $2500 tax bill for this. From what she said its a new bill that passed to do this, but they shouldnt be able to go after people prior to the bill passing. No one would have ordered from these places if they knew this.

it did, Im happy to be a none smoker now. It will be 1 year on Oct 5. After a few weeks you dont even want it. I hope I never go back to it. Once you quit your understand what all the non smokers complain about. They are 100% correct on everything they say.
