Last week a friend and I were discussing music....and we started to think about albums you can listen all the way through, without having to skip a song.

I don't mean that you can endure the bad songs, I mean cd's where you actually want to listen to every single song. I found that most of the cd's i could think of weren't even from my favorite artists...

Rancid (and out come the wolves), Radiohead (OK Computer), Summer at Shatter Creek (self titled)..and a couple more came to mind.

so what cd's can you listen all the way through?

I was having a similar conversation about this the other day.

Have their been any recent albums where you NEED to listen to every track, in the order they are on the cd, in order to get the "message"?

I think Dashboard Confessional put one out recently, but cant say I bothered to listen to that one.

CDs that I can listen to straight thru:

Saves The Day - Cant Slow Down
Lifetime - Jerseys Best Dancers
Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical Misanthropia
Stryder - Masquerade

Going by what's on my ipod only:

Bjork: Post
Brand Nubian: One for All
Buena Vista Social Club
D'Angelo: Brown Sugar
Danger Doom
Deftones: White Pony
Diamond D and the Psychotic Neurotics: Stunts, Blunts and Hip Hop
Dilated Peoples: Expansion Team, The Platform
DJ Shadow: Endtroducing, The Private Press
The Genius: Liquid Swords
Fiona Apple: Tidal, When the Pawn
J-Live: The Best Part
Jedi Mind Tricks: Violent by Design
MF Doom: MM...Food?
Miles Davis: Kind of Blue, Bitches Brew, Sketches of Spain
Pearl Jam: Benaroya Hall 10/22/2003
Prince: Purple Rain
Queens of the Stone Age: Songs for the Deaf
Radiohead: The Bends
System of a Down: Steal This Album
Thelonious Monk: Alone in San Francisco
TV on the Radio: Young Liars

There are probably tons more, but I must have around 1000 cds. Plus I almost always listen to whole albums on principle since that is how the "artists" meant for it to be heard, but even musical genius find it hard not to have 1 skipable track on their album.

A real artist arranges music for an album start to finish, not just a few hits that will sell well on the radio.

Another one of those odd favourites. The fucking limeys went and stuck 6 bonus tracks IN THE MIDDLE of the original CD version. I'm pretty sure that's why they got the mad cow disease so bad. God hates an interrupted album sequence.

Surprisingly, there aren't that many - even some of my favorites have tracks I get bored with.

Van Morrison - Moondance
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Bowie - Ziggy, Hunky Dory and Young Americans
Elvis Costello - This Year's Model (I like "My Aim is True" better, but I don't skip a song here)
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Lennon - Plastic Ono Band

Noticeably absent: Beatles, Stones, "Pinkerton," the Clash, White Stripes, the Smiths, "My Aim is True," Sublime... good thread. And the Pink Floyd and King Crimson is kind of a technicality because you HAVE to listen to them in their entirety to get the full experience. It's not like a collection of singles.

You don't seem to get that whatever 'emo' music is it has to be defined by common musical qualities, not fucking lyrical content. If every song about feelings is emo then every fucking band that ever fucking existed is emo. Led Zep? Emo. Body Count? Emo. John Phillip Sousa? Emo.

The first 2 saves the day cd's -

Cant Slow Down and Through Being Cool are straight up pop punk cds,
the acoustic ep - maybe Ill let you consider that, but even then - its just an acoustic album,
Stay What You Are - indie rock nonsense.
Sound The Alarm - indie rock nonsense
The B-sides album - most of the songs were around the era of the first 2 albums and keep that general feel to them.

I mean they would be a terrible band to use as a guide for any genre - seeing how they have put out 6 albums and (with the excpetion of the first 2) each one has a completely different sound to it.

just a quick not on the emo stuff, i didnt want to respond but fuck it.

I have booked many bands at concert venues and many of these bands are so called "emo" Saves the Day, Get Up Kids, Reggie and the Full Effect, Bright Eyes, bayside the list goes on and on, and all of these bands HATE the genre of emo, get up kids went as far as setting up specific concerts at the Bottleneck in Lawrence called "lets stop the emo movement" and "please dont call us emo"

Its just music why put labels on shit who cares listen to whatever you like.

Let me pay you all a favor, buy or download yourselves Ben Folds Five/Ben Folds. You will throw away all other albums that you previously listened to all the way through, I promise, he will not disappoint, and if he does, then you should be a dead person that used to live on earth but then found out quite suddenly 'holy shit, I need to not be alive anymore, because this music isn't reaching me.'

The shit he did with Shatner is amazing, as is most of the Ben Folds stuff anyway. Rockin the suburbs is great, and the cover of "Bitches aint shit" is down right amazing.

Hey, Here Is One That Epo Recommended And Sent And F_S Listened To Tonight For The First Time (And Four Times At That). It's Dirty-Sweet And Nasty But Always FUN And Musically Spectacular. There Are 10 Good Tracks And Zero Bad Tracks. There Is No Song-Skipping With "The Best Little Secrets Are Kept" By Louis XIV. Great Stuff!

It's Definitely Time For A Career Change, But Nothing As Sweet As That!

Your crazy. I saw your list on that other thread. You are way off base. Saves The Day? Lifetime? Wild! Hell I even know members of some of those bands and they would laugh if I called them an emo band.

You blew your musical knowledge when you said that "every band in the jersey scene is a ska band or ex members of" - I can name 50 bands that are so far from this - and referred to rudeboys as skinheads...pick up SPIRIT OF 69 and learn something kid.

The jersey scene/ska thing is like a scenester joke that I'm not gonna explain.
I'm not threatened being called 'kid'.
And at one point in history, prior to the current perception of emo music, the drumming, vocals and guitar styles that the bands I listed are breaking would've been considered emo or proto emo. I'm done talking about it, its so not worth it to try put forth some bands I think are really great and say 'Hey, everyone talks shit on emo and only associates emo with some terrible bands, here's something that might alter your perception a little.' Apparently not only is that insulting it also invites the opinions of dudes that dont know what theyre talking about. I feel like one of those Krishna's that started getting swastika tattoos to 'take it back.'
