View Full Version : Getting Published

How does one go about getting published? I'm talking more along the lines of print rather than online, or if online at least something with some sort of prestige and not just the equivalent of a blog. Payment is preferable, though not necessary. I don't have a particular area of expertise in writing so I am pretty much open to trying my hand at anything. I don't have any connections but it's something I've been wanting to try my hand at.
Any suggestions?

A risky strategy, I'm afraid.
From The Myth Of Sisyphus by Albert Camus
I have heard of an emulator of Peregrinos, a post-war writer who, after having finished his first book, committed suicide to attract attention to his work. Attention was in fact attracted, but the book was judged no good.
As my niece would say "PSYCH!"

I know a few people who do publishing. What kind of writing do you do? Are you interested in printing a sort of self published book that you can get out there before you actually get published? Let me know. I know people in both fields but of course it's harder to get actually published by a larger source.
:)
I've been published by a friend of mine. He's pretty good but only deals with Chapbooks. And I've been published in a real book (an anthology) but I got lucky on that one....

I have people that check my punctuation.
Complete works of non-fiction. One was a short-story about my time as a shrimping boat captain with my once army liutenant being my first mate. Hilarity ensues.
Another one was about a more serious time in my life when I owned a casino, got seriously involved with a hooker, and eventually made enemies of my mob friends.

I wrote a story about how I tried to interview Joe Dimaggio once, for a little magazine called Esquire.

Start small. Local journals & town newspapers/newsletters.
I would recommend picking up the Writers' Journal (http://www.writersjournal.com/) magazines. My boyfriend and i are English majors and find it very helpful.
Also, if youre in school i would look into on campus papers and literary journals. This past Spring i had two pages worth of material published in our journal that can be used as resume material and such.
Wanting to be published is great as long as you work hard for it, otherwise it's very daunting. One of my professors went out of his way to tell us to never even expect a word back from the agencies because more likely than not you never will.

This is kind of like a story I'm writng now about a plagurizing short storyist who ends up becoming second in command to a space dictator.
What kind of real world experience could a plagurizing short story writer have that would enable him/her to assist in ruling space? I'm not one to knock down someone's creative zest, but I think you're stretching a little on that one.
But hey, if Crichton can put man next to a T-Rex, then who in God's name am I to knock your idea?

Never stop writing. Writing, like most other things, is not an innate talent. It is a perishable skill, something that needs to be cultivated and kept alive.
I think DonInNC linked to this book:

If you are going to buy a book of this nature, this would be the one to buy.

OK, I know, it's a little hokey (and, yes, Mr. Riddle does write a lot for the "Christian" market), but I've met John Riddle at several writers' conferences down in Wildwood. He's a lot of fun to hear speak and loves to give advice to get folks started.
Hope this helps!
